Back in the spring 2012 I attend an MLG event as a spectator in Columbus, Ohio with a few friends. It was the highlight of my year and interacting with so many fans, players and personalities was an eye opening experience. It was a moment in my life that I felt like the eSports industry was the place for me.
While I was there I picked up a shirt and got it signed by a bunch of players to give to a good friends brother. She and her brother were and still are big gamers. At the time I didn't really know her brother that well because he is about 5 years older than me. After coming back I gave him the shirt that I had had signed because he express interest in a going but couldn't. After giving him the shirt he was ecstatic and almost instantly offered me a job on campus at a computer lab.
It is there that I am actually writing from and where the real story begins. When people ask what I do at the computer lab I tell them that I get payed to watch Starcraft, because that is exactly what I am doing. Yes there are occasional moments where someone in the computer lab requires help or I need to put paper in the printer, but for the most part I am left to my own devices and those devices are eSports. I work about 20 hours a week in 5 hour shifts where I sit behind a desk at a computer and watch all the Starcraft and read all of the TeamLiquid posts that I can. It is this job that has helped grow my love for eSports as well as giving me the freedom to pursue it in anyway that I choose.
I am attending Central Michigan University to pursue a degree in communication and public relations. I hope to one day work for an eSports organization doing anything at all because working everyday on something you love isn't work; it's passion and if there is one thing that I am passionate about it is Starcraft and eSports. Right now I tell people that I get paid to watch Starcraft and while that is an exaggeration I hope that one day it will be true; I hope that one day I will be writing about eSports, blogging about eSports, speaking to a large audience about eSports. Even if it is only for 10 cents on the dollar, because for me doing anything like that is such a rush and a phenomenal experience and getting paid makes it that much sweeter. For now however, I'll continue sitting behind this desk and absorbing as much content as possible. I have my foot in the door now but I hope one day that the door will be completely open for me so I can walk right in.
