Why is it socially unacceptable to eat ice cubes?

I got a glass of Coke today, and apparently every distributor of soda in the country has this unspoken agreement to fill 2/3 of the container with ice. I enjoy my Coke with ice, even after a day of being outside in negative degree (Fahrenheit, ~-20 Celsius) weather, but no matter how loudly I say "That's enough ice, thank you very much" or, failing that, "GODDAMMIT ENOUGH WITH THE ICE, I PAID FOR COKE" I still get 2/3 a glass of ice. The glass is probably ten times more expensive than all of its contents anyway.

So whatever ice doesn't melt by the time I'm finished with whatever soda they did ration for my enjoyment, finds its way, one by one, into my mouth. I get nasty stares from others when I do this for some reason. I paid two dollars for fifty cents' with of soda, which costs about five cents to manufacture. You're going to watch me enjoy my ice.

That said, it's delicious. Ice is always cold, and it's like water but with slower release. So you can't just slam it down and have it fall straight into your bladder. Your system absorbs it. Mostly. I'd even start carrying it around, but it seems everyone and their mother thinks that eating ice is a travesy equal to digging up their grandfather's grave and sodomizing his corpse.

Does anyone else here ever eat ice?

I always eat the ice if it hasn't molten yet. And I do very much enjoy putting ice in my beverages, so that they are as cold as possible. Any cold beverage that is good, gets better with ice.

Soda, cider, beer - You name it, ice improves it.

I love eating the ice as well! I always eat it when given the chance, though it's been a while since I've had a drink full of ice.

But while the ice should be acceptable, I have to admit I might take it a bit too far when I eat snow. At least the ice is completely hygienic. I just enjoy the texture of snow too much to not eat it.

Ice dilutes the drink. Soda/beer/whatever doesn't taste as good when it's watered down. There's a good amount of ice and then there's the amount that servers put.

Naturally, there is such a thing as too much ice.

Edit: But god damn it, if some one gives you too much ice, you have to make the best out of that situation and eat it.

I probably enjoy my drinks with ice, but as you said restaurants fill it with far far too much if you ask for it. I always ask for no ice because I feel like I'm getting ripped off if I get 1/3rd coke 2/3rd ice. That's kind of weird of me...but yup.

Your body doesn't "digest" ice. The ice melts and your body absorbs it the same way it would water.

That being said, it still takes calories. A calorie is a unit of measuring thermal energy, and since your body is mainly just a sac of water, it takes energy to heat up that water. I'm pretty sure that it's a pretty negligible amount of energy though, so I wouldn't try to go eat ice cubes to burn calories

I do that at restaurants as well. I'll even tip less if they still give me ice, the money I lost from the amount of soda can come out of their tip.

If you go to McDonalds, you can ask them for "light ice" and they will give you the perfect amount.

Holy fuck why do they not advertise this.

Do they have it at Burger King as well? I prefer Whoppers to Big Macs.

Not sure. My girlfriend works at McDonalds part time and she taught me that. Also you can get 13 cookies in a box for 5 bucks. And they have excellent cookies. I know a lot of McDonalds stuff, but nothing about other places.

Wait a sec both of those are self serving where I am. Only the moneygrubbers at Wendy's fill it up for you so you can't mix sodas or get refills.

Do they have it at Wendy's?

Yeah they have excellent chocolate chip cookies, especially if you get them freshly baked.

Seriously though. They need to chill with the ice. I mean nobody even wants to fill the ice machine so why risk being the one who causes it to go empty?

Eat your ice. I do it. Zero fucks given. I don't crunch it though so maybe you are violating noise ordinance.

Crunching ice is really bad for your teeth. That might be part of why people have an aversion to it. Maybe.

I feel you on the unnecessary amounts of ice. Seriously, drinks that come out of a fountain machine are always cold. You don't need ice if you are going to drink your beverage straight away, and even if you are going to drink it when you get home in 30m I'd rather drink warm soda than slightly cooler (still warm) watery soda. Letting the ice melt in your mouth is all well and good, but DO NOT CRUNCH IT. My mother had to get dental work done for some ridiculous price, like >$400, due to crunching it.

I also don't really understand why people order anything other than the smallest drink size when eating somewhere with a serve-yourself fountain machine. My brother spends like $9 every time he goes to McD's on stupid shit like that. He could get the same (or more) amount of protein and calories for a bit over $4-5 if he just got three mcdoubles and a small drink.

Eating ice is only weird because people crunch it. If you let it melt in your mouth and the peices are large enough to make a bulge, then yeah you're fine. Also, ask for no ice if you want, no ice means that they can't give you any so you're chrystal clear lol.

I've never understood why there is so much ice in drinks. The cost of a soda with no ice to them is only a few cents, yet they sell it for dollars, and include copious amounts of ice (to allow them to put even less product in). Money hungry companies...

As for the ice chewing; I do it as well from time to time, but never in public. I only do it when I'm alone and bored.
Skill is relative.

Isn't it just a custom to put ice in whiskey unless it's a fancy bottle?

Whiskey and water is an excellent mixed drink. But yes, always order your whiskey neat.

I eat ice. I also am iron deficient. You might wanna get that checked sent,

Order your whiskey neat and a glass of water on the side. Mix to your liking. Having ice in it ruins the flavor and the dilution can't be controlled.

There is an awesome bar in my hometown that serves only whiskey and gives you an eye dropper full of water so you can dilute it exactly the way you like it.

Lol funny rang blog ftw.
I only eat ice on hot days, other than that i just drink and leave the ice. Most of my drinks are canned anyway, canned soda. And when i go to a mc donalds for instance, i only buy food to take back home to then use my own beverages. Mainly because of what you just say, why fuck would you pay £1.00 for a Soda which is 3/4 full with ice and 1/4 full with Soda. Just seems silly, so i just don't do that.

However i understand in a restaurant this cannot be stopped ;_;

You can always ask for no (or very little) ice, anywhere you go... and if they don't listen to you (and you mind the extra ice), just send it back. They'll get the hint eventually. At a lot of the restaurants I go to, they've recently been blindly adding a lemon wedge to my water. I'm not a fan of this (and they default to water with lemon even when I don't ask for lemon), so I'll specifically ask them for water without lemon. And usually I just take the lemon off the lip of the glass if they mess up my drink order, but if they toss a lemon wedge into my drink I'm not necessarily above sending it back (as there's something undesirable in my glass, and I'd rather not fish it out). I order lemonade when I actually want a lemony drink taste in my mouth; if I ask for water, I just want some ice cold, refreshing water without a flavoring... plus, I hate getting the seeds sucked in when I'm taking large gulps of the drink.

Also, I think the negative looks that you get for enjoying your ice stem more from the loud crunches that ice in your mouth may make (especially if you chew like a cow/ with your mouth mostly open). Other than that, I'd have no idea why someone would care what food or drink is in your mouth lol.

If you go to McDonalds, you can ask them for "light ice" and they will give you the perfect amount.

Holy fuck why do they not advertise this.

Do they have it at Burger King as well? I prefer Whoppers to Big Macs.

Please tell me you don't actually eat whoppers or big macs.

I love whoppers! I eat at Burger King twice a month.

Depends on the restaurant too, if they have free refills then I'll take the extra ice because it'll.probably last all six rounds of Coke.

Definitely, although over time the ice may melt and water down your drink :/

I wouldn't classify it as socially unacceptable; I never really get stares when I do it. Not frequently at least. I do it if other people are still eating and I'm done just for something to do, but if I go and pick up a burger and fries somewhere on my own I don't bother eating it.

My mother has an ice addiction. She eats it all the time, she doesn't even need a drink as an excuse to eat it. I remember in winter she would actually take an ice tray in the car with us to work. And sometimes she would buy bags of ice, 3kgs at a time, every second day. It was crazy.

On a lesser note, I like eating ice too, but not that badly. It only started when I had my tongue pierced and I sucked on ice to keep the swelling down a bit.

Yeah I heard it was bad for your teeth too so instead I just let it melt in my mouth, as far away from my teeth as possible.

I have no idea why people give you weird stares...to be honest I think they're the weirdos. There's nothing wrong with enjoying ice. Its like a nice, slow, cool sip of water in your mouth. What's wrong with that?

Soda, cider, beer - You name it, ice improves it.

Ice dilutes the drink. Soda/beer/whatever doesn't taste as good when it's watered down. There's a good amount of ice and then there's the amount that servers put.

Put some rocks that you found outside into your freezer. Throw those into drink instead of ice so you won't dilute it. Yay!

Or those small ice cube shaped plastic things filled with water that act as reusable ice cubes and don't dilute it either.

Commercial ice is usually made of water from the sink, not tap water. Not a good idea to put those in your mouth

wat. it's already in your drink, what difference does it make?

Although I will admit that this is one reason I generally don't get ice in my drinks, period.

Some of the dirty ice hasn't melted yet to further contaminate your drink

If you don't think about it, it becomes less disgusting.

This is why I enjoy all kinds of fast food, and don't care much if my food's been on the ground.
