So just yesterday, I lucked into finding a gold 64gb version of the iphone 5s at my local phone company. I'd been looking to buy the new iphone, as my iphone 4(black) is quite outdated now. I'd been using my old phone for nearly 2 and a half years, and it's gotten to the point where I had to charge the thing twice a day(and i'd always been careful about not overcharging, not making the phone too bright, closing apps, etc). I remember when i first got it, it would go at least a full day before i needed to charge.
I have used android phones before, as someone i'm close with works at samsung, but i just simply did not like how the OS felt. I admit i didn't get to use it for an extended period of time like a year or something, but it just didn't fit me. I am by no means an apple guy; I've always used windows computers and didn't like macs when I have tried them. However, for the iphone, even if it might not have all the features android phones now have, everything on the phone just seems cleaner and much more organized.
Anyways, the reason i say i "lucked" into it is because even now, nearly a full month after the release of the iphone 5s, it's nearly impossible to find a gold version of this phone. If you don't believe me, go look on ebay and look at how much the gold version of the iphone is being sold for. The legit ones are all at least 1000 usd.
First opening the phone, I was pretty amazed at how... premium it looked. It really didn't look like a phone, but almost like some kind of jewelry or something. When i first heard about the gold version of this phone, I was pretty skeptical. I thought it'd look tacky and corny, and only real hipsters or people in china would get this version. I have definitely changed my mind though as this phone doesn't look tacky at all. I think it's largely due to the color being more champaigne than gold.
Besides the looks part, I've been pretty impressed with the other features of the phone. It is noticeably faster than the iphone 4, and switching between apps/multitasking is much smoother. The touch id also seems like a cool feature. I can just put my finger on the home button and the phone unlocks. I actually like ios 7 so far as it looks and feels much better than the old ios. There's nothing too different from my iphone 4 in terms of what it does, but I wasn't really looking for a revolutionary phone(and i don't think there really is any on the market right now). Samsung and LG are working with phones that bend, but for the past 2 or so years, it's all been about specs and making phones faster/smoother.
It's only been a day since i got it and i can't even make calls on it right now because my sim card hasn't been activated. I plan on exploring the phone more and finding out more features in the next few days.

Thank you for this! I plan to switch from my HTC one to the 5s soon but I am going with the black, white iphones just hurts my eyes.

Enjoy the iPhone, the 4 served its purpose for me for a very long time...switched to an Android to see the other side of things.

I just activated mine yesterday and after putting my cheapo $3.50 case on it can't tell if its gold or silver! Also noticed its much faster than my old 4 and being on LTE and keeping unlimited = win!
I hate the new safari hiding bookmark button when semi-inactive

Good blog. As someone who works with Apple and had yet to try out the 5S this was an interesting and insightful blog. What made you decide to get gold though? I really wouldn't have picked it myself. Infact when it was announced I was actually very disappointed in the new features. The fingerprint system seems to be interesting but I cant forsee it being very stable long term.
I do much prefer iOS 7 myself, even though I don't own any apple products (!) but it seems much smoother and prettier. It also seems to preserve battery life better. I love android, and to be honest I think Samsung is developing in the right direction hardware wise. The software/hardware integration, App store security and built in anti-virus are features I find best about Apple. Also, working in an Apple Store you tend to see all the things that go wrong with their products. I guess it is the same with any product though. Nothing is flawless.

To be honest I prefer Apple's computers to their phones. There are probably many companies with just as good machines but quality-wise i think the MacBooks and iMacs are above them. I am a Windows user myself, but I find my work experience on Mac to be excellent. It does take a lot of getting used to I admit.

I was actually originally going to get the silver color. I had used a black iphone for so long and I was always somewhat envious when I saw others with white ones because they just looked so pretty haha. Didn't want to go for the gold originally because I thought it'd stick out way too much and, like I said, look corny. But then I started watching some unboxing videos and photos and noticed how the gold one actually doesn't stick out too much and looks really nice.
Obviously, I looked at the features of this phone and i do agree that there's nothing amazing here. But i was really just looking to get a faster phone, and i mean, what could apple really have done more to this version of the iphone? The only two things that come to mind are make the screen larger and make it higher resolution. I agree that higher resolution would be better, but I actually prefer "smaller" phones and I want phones that I can comfortably do everything with in one hand. I think if you already have an iphone 5, or maybe even a 4s, it's not really worth upgrading, but from the 4, it's a pretty big difference.
I agree that it does seem like samsung is doing really well with it's smartphone line.I think in the future it will, if it hasn't already, take over apple as the premier smartphone making company. However, for right now, i still much prefer the iOS to androids and there's not really much of a difference between the two where I can just ignore the OS because one phone is simply superior.
Also, my experience with the iphone 4 has been very, very good for 2 and a half years, and so i felt like i should give apple another go. I mean, it's held up well, I've never had to take it somewhere to get it fixed, did everything I felt like it should do, etc.
As for macs, I think it's very suitable for some people. People that carry their laptops everywhere and don't want to carry a charger along with it, people that don't need the top line graphics cards, people that don't want to be bothered with anti-viruses and stuff. I'm not that kind of person though haha. I also don't like the OS on macs. It's probably because I've used windows for so long, but I just find windows to be cleaner and easier to use, for me at least. the OS is much better for designing and stuff but i never design anything so it really doesn't suit me.

Yeah, i also find it pretty ridiculous when people with an iphone 5 feel the need to buy the 5s even if it means going into debt. I also know many people who have owned every version of the iphone so far. I mean, if you have the money, i guess you can do whatever you want with it, but yeah, it's sort of ridiculous.
For me, I did have money to buy this phone and I plan on using it for at least two more years(probably more, like i did with my old phone). The main reason I got a new phone was because I really didn't want to charge the thing twice a day, and it's actually kind of become laggy now. I actually use my phone quite a bit, so I felt like i needed to change.
