So lately after grinding a lot of games of Dota and getting more knowledge on the NA scene I have been hit with a realization that kind of puts a hamper in my Dota plans. I didn't play WC3 dota after 2008ish and even then I only played it with friends over lan. My goal is and has always been to play at an amateur level, nothing serious, just lower level leagues and cups, whether or not it's possible it's always a goal in every game I play.

Now the Dota problem, The game is so old already that the top of the scene is made up of veteran players and people like me who started seriously with Dota 2 are 5-6 years behind the curve. This is my main problem right now, I can play League and ladder and feel like I am competing on some level and not be massively behind the curve (especially due to the nature of the game). I feel like I would have to improve so much faster than possible to keep up with top level people and the scene is already very full. League, while lacking cups and in houses, has what seems like a decent competition in the diamond bracket as well as the fact that it's growth is getting hard to ignore.

Since I enjoy both games (albeit Dota more) I don't have a good way of deciding on that, because Leagues ladder keeps me playing.

So what are my options, for the most part I find Dota 2 a more well rounded fun game but I also enjoy League and have more friends who play it. Am I right in my assumption that I am way to far behind the curve in Dota to ever play in things like NEL and actually do good etc?

A lot of my assumptions are based on ignorance and would greatly appreciate being informed on the likelihood of my assumptions.

I will continue to play both but If I don't focus on one I won't improve at either nearly fast enough to be competitive ever.

NOTE: Competitive doesn't mean pro, it simply means competing at a non pub level i.e diamond bracket/NEL level.

IMO dota now is more easier than 2008. Just watch pro players and improve your mechanics

It is easier to improve in Dota 2 than it used to be in DotA. This means a large part of the curve was added when the MM came. It means it isn't as old as you think of it.

I would assume it would take you a year to get to the level you want to assuming you are single and work/go to school normal hours.

Only a year? It seems like that's extremely forgiving for the amount of time some of the people at that level have been playing, is there a decent amount of diminishing returns at some point? I am currently upgrading courses to back to Uni so I have a decent amount of free time. I probably play 3-4 games a day of Dota sometimes more sometimes less.

You're making it sound like NEL is filled with really great and pro players.

If you've been playing since 2005 (or even over a year) and don't suck then you can get into NEL and play there really easily. Not sure if I understand your point 100%, so my bad in advance.

I know some people who picked up dota a few years ago and became ridiculously good. One of them was asked to join a major NA team but declined. Most players typically plateau after a few years and it's much faster going from noob to very, very good than it is from very, very good to pro.

Well that's good to hear, at least gives me a bit of drive to continue trying to improve if anything.

it's easy to catch on the subtleties that the super experienced players of dota 2 have ingrained in their head after player for such a long time. Don't let the fact that people have played a game for a long time turn you away from playing it because chances are you will never find a game to really focus in with that kind of attitude
