Since I use TL as an outlet and blogs as a fun place to visit, figure I'd get something off my chest after reading a scam blog.
You know how google doesn't differentiate periods (.) in emails? Well someone with my name signed up and registered for an appleid using probably what he thought was a throw-away email.
This guy's Appleid: Tasslehoofburrfoot@gmail.com*
My Gmail: Tasslehoof.Burrfoot@gmail.com My Appleid: Tasslehoof.Burrfoot@gmail.com
* - real emails have been changed to protect the innocent/guilty, as I don't actually own these.
Caveat being apple recognizes periods as significant characters in emails, while gmail ignores them. He's some dude in another state, and signs me up for all sorts of random crap. Newsletters, forums, etc. I get mildly annoyed and when I start getting actual real emails intended for him, I respond to those folks saying - "Hi, tell this Burrfoot the email he's telling you to use is actually mine and he should probably pick another one if you actually want to communicate".
Well, they usually either apologize or tell me off like I hacked his email. Whatever. Then start the goolge+ annoyances. I know, what losers use google+? Losers with brother-in-laws that work for google and refuse to facetime/hangout/babypicture/etc.
Anyways, sometime last year when the iPhone 5 came out, this other Burrfoot buys and registers his iPhone using the above appleid. So of course, I say I forgot 'my' password, email me a new password, to find his phone number and call him up to have a conversation about periods and appleids.
Except this guy is convinced I have just hacked his email, that he is reading his email as we speak, and the police will be at my door shortly.
Soo.... a few months ago, after another round of spam and phonecalls I decide to buy this other Burrfoot some stuff to prove a point, as he left is credit card info on his Appleid. I'm not sure how he buys apps, or updates, but it was still the same reset password from before. I send him a few top of the line iPads with the gift tag "Stop using my email!".
Long story short, package arrives at his listed address, the carrier failed to deliver 3 times resulting in being returned to sender, and then apple emails asking for an alternate address.

Just create a new e-mail address. I feel like this was a whole troll in general. Considering the final line lol at least. + Show Spoiler [the spoilas] +

How does this happen? Don't you get a confirmation email before you are able to sign up for stuff?

Some do, some don't.
Twitch doesn't, which is why there are so many spambots. Also, twitch lets you put comments in your e-mail address. Comments in emails are tagged with the + key.
So, for example:
I have an e-mail: my.email@gmail.com
I could create multiple accounts with . abuse, like m.y.e.m.a.i.l@gmail.com, but eventually you'll run out of ways of doing that.
So, you can do this: my.email+twitch1@gmail.com
This will actually go to your my.email@gmail.com address! And, as twitch doesn't need verification you can go ahead and do some spamming, now.
Some websites don't allow this, some do, and it can actually be quite useful.
Where possible I always sign up with my.email+sitename@gmail.com, especially if it's for "newsletter" stuff, as it means you can easily filter out the newsletters themselves.
It also allows you to see whether those sites are selling on your address. If you start getting spam mail for random drugs that is being sent to my.email+walmart@gmail.com, you know walmart has sent your address off to someone.
I, too, have been getting random mails to people. My email is my name. So, I'm getting mails for different people that have my name. One has a kid that goes to Norfolk High School. One is a Texas Republican named Betty (which is odd, as I'm a guy, but hey, I get to feel like in Kung Pow). One has a 2003 Honda Accord. I have the VIN, the insurance information, their address, everything. The last is a Realtor in Virginia. He seems to get his confidential Realty information sent to that address. I have informed each of them multiple times, but no change.
I had this address first, so I'm not changing it. The Honda one is pretty obnoxious, though, there's a lot of spam, so I might report the car stolen so they actually change the address on file.
