Got offered 2 jobs and can't decide where to go

Finding a job in Greece nowadays is really hard. All over the news there have been people talking about how they are unemployed for 1 year. Anyways Long story short. I was working in the used ophthalmic equipment field in my previous job and was also studying bio-engineering in the afternoon. After I got my degree I did a 3month internship with my uni teachers and that ended in around July. In August I started sending my CV and was looking to get any job I could possibly get since my wife is pregnant and I really need money. So 2 days ago, I went into an interview and they wanted to hire me right away. I was extremely happy but the same afternoon I got a call from an interview I went into that was really good.

Now these 2 jobs are:

1. Medical Equipment salesman.

-Have to travel 5 days/week. Wake up at 7am get back home at 10pm.
-Have to deal with doctors who sometimes talk very rude at you.
-From 2pm to 6pm doctor's offices are closed so have to look for something to do for 4 hours in another town.
-Challenge to make that sales going on. Altho really hard nowadays to sell a machine that might cost 15000 euro.
-Stress, Anxiety, Many nerves when getting back home because of rude doctors or not able to make a sale after a long trip.
Pros are, around 100-150 euro extra in comparison with the other job, will look good in my CV since its the field I have been working for and want to work for in the future ALTHO AS A TECHNICIAN and not a salesman. Got to meet new people that will in the future be clients of mine.

2. Go to houses and check their gas numbers and note them down to a paper.
-Have to work 5 days/week from 10am to 6pm.
-Easy to do job.
-Get to see my newborn and spend time with my family.

Payment not as bad as first job.

After discussions with friends/family and my wife. Everyone at first started saying to go to the job that has to do with the equipment, after explaining them tho that I won't be able to enjoy my family they all said yes ur right better do the other thing and after 1-2 years try something again.

Family says do whatever I feel more comfortable with which is the gas work.

Me and my wife are leaning towards gas work since I will be free after 6pm and can do other stuff as well and earn income (Am doing something with eye corneas for the past months from the US so it's going good).

What do you guys think?

gas numbers job, most definitely. the medical salesman job, you pretty much never get to see your family. 7am to 10pm? you get back home at 10, eat something quick, shower, do a chore or two around the house, and it has to be bedtime cuz you gotta wake up early. yeah you get paid a bit more and it looks better on your cv, but i think it's not worth it if you can't spend time with your wife and newborn.

I did something similar to the gas meter job for a little while (water meters), sadly they didnt pay me properly for the first two months so i ended up leaving (they also didnt supply me with payslips till i'd left and negotiated a contract at my second job). Whats even sadder is that when i did receive my payslips and back-payments they were paying really well for such an easy job!

Disregard family, acquire currency. No but seriously if you do the first job you can move to something better in a couple years, the reading meter job won't lead you anywhere, I'd do what's better for the long term.

4 years ago, the salary for the same job in Greece was 1000 euro / month. Now it's something around 450 euro / month + 100 euro extra for insurance. So yea... By the way I think if I do well in this, I might do some internship to be able to fix these meters since my hands are really good!

I think the second job is the one to go for. Selling stuff is pretty hard and those hours suck. Work is work, but you need to have time for the ones you care about. And besides we all know we only work so we can have good internet to play SC 2 <3

I celebrated 4th of July in NYC with a bunch of Greeks. I think every one of them would have preferred to be living in Greece (Highly offensive to my national pride), but there just aren't any jobs, and those that do exist pay terribly.

Good luck! That's a difficult choice but from the ay you describe the sales job it sounds like you don't want that kind of pressure right now.

Do the medical salesman job - the future potential earnings will be much higher, and it's easier to make those sacrifices now, when your kids are still young and won't remember much, rather than after they're old enough to remember missing you while you're gone.

meter reading for sure. on top of the insane hours, youre gonna wanna pull your hair out from the stress of sales. decent pay, stable hours and seeing your family trumps that big time

It really just comes down to if you value family time or money more. I guess if the income difference is significant enough you could make an argument that working the first job will give more family time later, but I think the options are pretty clear cut. No one here can tell you what your values are, that's for you to decide.

depends on how financially secure you feel and whether you value family over greater potential monetary earnings

seems like the 1st job is going to demand a more diverse skill set which will help with future career growth while the 2nd job is more grunt work

1st job since you can move on to something better. With a child coming up you might need more money later (college funds, etc) so investing into the future isn't such a bad idea. Not getting to see your family will be painful but sometime sacrifices are to be made. The question really become you or your family future.

First job is 15 hours a day being out, so 75 hours a week, all for for 100 to 150 euros extra. Working hard is nice and all, but you won't have a life, and you need a life to raise a kid, not just money. Plus, you'd need to recover on weekends... Take the second job.

I personally could only imagine the first job if I knew that I could just do it for a short period of time and be guaranteed something good after that, but even though it looks good on a CV, it's just not worth the sacrifice IMO.

yeah i just dont see how a sales job would benefit you in a tech position in any way

being a tech and going into sales would help you a lot but not the other way around

Is that 100-150 euro a day or week? I'm guessing it's a week, which is not worth it at all.

And why are doctors' offices closed from 2pm to 6pm every day? So you have to talk to them in the morning in their office, kill 4 hours doing mostly nothing, then talk to them after work hours? Or do they work again after 6?

I'm guessing a month. It wouldn't differ too much if they were 2000/month and 2150/month, but from 450/month to 600/month, I would pick the 1st job. Yes it's much more difficult, yes you won't see your family at all, but it might get you to jump a few more steps into better jobs and better jobs bring better money, which you will need when your kid grows up.

So apart from money and future jobs we can all agree that the 2nd job is by far the best choice. Btw if i get the 2nd job i will be making +400 euro for the cornea job since 6pm is the perfect time to contact us. So it will be 800e/month. The person who asked bout the doctors working hours, they work till 2pm take a break and then at 6pm and sometimes they have work that wont even be able to see you.

Considering you basically said the only thing better about the first job is that it's more money and better for future jobs, I don't think this should be much of a surprise.

I have a friend that sells medical equipment and he likes it. He travels all over the world for his company. But, I see him once a month so it's hard to see people sometimes.
