If you want a more specific suggestion, and the timing of "soon" isn't within the immediate future, dropping by an art store that can let you decorate a ceramic cup/plate etc. (which they would kiln fire for you) is a great gift. Pretty cheap, something she can use every day and be reminded of you, and you can add all sorts of fun to it. Plus, that type of gift would perfectly suite a practically-minded, ~alternative girl. (Technically even faster is doing the same idea, but just on a store-bought mug/cup with paint supplies you can buy just about anywhere. http://www.ehow.com/how_6068362_decorate-own-ceramic-coffee-mug.html is an example/possible guide for this.)
