TheCore Day 16: Hit a small wall, still grinding

EntropyFails 81 Posts May 29 2013 09:55 GMT #1 Hey Readers! I did another day of ladder. All the games went terribly. It is very hard to continue losing to opponents that I know I can easily beat if I was playing with my old hotkey setup. However I did notice that during a drop heavy game, I was more able to limit the damage I took. That gave me some hope in an otherwise hopless day of ladder. Not much can be done other than continue to bash away at the ladder and see where it goes. Some days you just cannot put your best foot forward. Starcraft is hard. Thanks for reading!

You've been at this 16 days and your still playing like shit, because you've played thousands of games on another setup that is now engrained in your muscle memory. Also, what rank are you? I'd find it pointless for anyone below high masters to attempt using a different hotkey setup to better themselves tbh, and i'd expect even that to end in disaster

Smackzilla United States539 Posts May 29 2013 20:08 GMT #5 It basically boils down to paying a "short-term" cost for a long-term gain. It might take you about a season to return to where you were, but in the end, you'll likely be: 1) Using cameras more 2) Using control groups more 3) Playing with better ergonomics. You can do #1 and #2 with standard, but the core makes it easier and more ergonomic, while I'd argue that standard inhibits those good habits. Furthermore, that "cost" is more about your ladder ranking than slowing down your SC2 development. During that time you're learning the core, you're still getting better at fundamentals via play. I.E. learning a hotkey system can be done somewhat in parallel to learning SC2. Personally, I quit SC2 in may 2012 and started playing again at HotS release in march. I decided to use The Core then. May 1st, when season 2 started, I was promoted back to my old league. Currently, I'd say I'm playing better than before, and I feel the switch has helped more than hurt. I doubt I'd be placed any higher than I am now, and my fundamentals are better. Cameras are the biggest difference to me, although more accessible control groups is good too. I'm using 4 - 5 control groups for units whereas with standard I was using 3. I'm definitely glad I switched, even if it was painful being worse than I could be for a month or more. To the OP: don't give up, and play lots of games vs. people. Doesn't matter if its unranked or ladder, but 90%+ of your training should be via human opponents at this stage.
