Back when I was in college and high school, I played a lot of PC games. I was primarily a MMO player, playing the original EverQuest and then moved onto World of Warcraft when that started getting really popular. I had never even heard of any other games before World of Warcraft, nor any other Blizzard games. I enjoyed playing just 1 game and only that 1 game, not ever looking beyond it. When WoW started to get a little boring and tedious for me, I was hearing people talk about a new game coming out: StarCraft II. I decided to give it a go, buying it the day it came out and loving it!
Reading on the forum, everyone talks about how great both WarCraft 3 and Brood War were. I want to go back and try both of these games just to get a taste of the mechanics of the game. I don't know which one I should try out first. I could either get the entire Starcraft anthology or WarCraft 3. I may later go and also try out Diablo 2 as everyone said that game was a ton of fun as well.

You can get a multiplayer only version of BW for free on iccup.
Is there any specific reason you're not even considering w1/2 d1 btw? I had a lot of fun with those games.

I never hear anyone say that wc1 or 2 were "the best" nor diablo 1. it's always comparisons with brood war and warcraft 3.

I suggest WC3 as well. If you know none of the series, WC3 is going to be more enjoyable for you
Consider Diablo 2 as well.

I played D1 2-3 years simultaneously with BW, definitely also a great game.

Honestly I played both of them a lot and loved them to death. I think I played SP of WCIII like 5+ times easy at different settings etc... just because I loved the micro and spells that you can string. On the other hand, I used to get immersed into the SP of BW as well and loved that story too. I voted Starcraft because I never played WCIII online so I never knew what it was like but UMS maps, fastest map possible, team games and BGH were the best for starcraft

I'm not sure I'd say that either, but if you're new to the games it won't hurt you to download the few mega and play around for an hour or two. Who knows, might even get you busy for a bit more. Either way I think it's a funky trip worth taking and it might help you get a better idea of what you appreciate in a game.

BW is similar to SC2, so you would transition better I guess.
However BW is not for everyone, it is a really really hard game. If you can't take a challenge and like to put the blame of your losses in everyone and everything but you then don't play BW.

WC3 has one of the all time great single player campaigns + Show Spoiler +theres a chance I have childhood bias so definitely get that.
|
wc3 is really good, easier to get into i think. that said, i think BW is the better game (gameplay wise)
|
The campaign and UMS games are better in WC3 imo.
|
If you want to play it in Multiplayer I would recommend BW (google iCCup, but prepare to put work into getting better and losing a lot), if you want to play the Singleplayer campaign you should definitely go with WC3 and the expansion in my opinion.
I don't know if there is still a good Multiplayer platform available for WC3, playing it on Bnet is almost impossible because you have somewhere around 300-700ms Ping on the WC3 Bnet servers nowadays regardless of how good your Internet connection is. The game itself is quite enjoyable in Multiplayer for some time, it is just not quite as balanced and deep as BW if you get more into it

WC3. That game was absolutely amazing and much easier to get into. Also you can watch games of Fly and Infi which really makes things awesome .

You've never played SC1, WC3 (i liked WC2 more, though), and D2. ?
I envy you.

I can tell you from playing WC3 for roughly 5-6 years that it is a really good game that is not for the faint of heart. WC3 has a rather easy but entertaining campaign that you might enjoy if that's all that you're looking for. I think you will have fun if you don't plan to play it competitively against people.
Should you choose to get into it in a more competitive aspect I can give you a couple of warnings: 1. The community is not very nice/tame. 2. The game has a rather high skill ceiling. 3. The game has a rather high barrier to competence (you will get slaughtered A LOT before you can hold your own). 4. There are a good bit of hackers, cheaters, and flamers
But overall, it is very fun in competitive team play and solo play.
Starcraft's campaign isn't as intricate as WC3's, so if you're looking for a good campaign/story go with WC3. But if you want a really good competitive game, Brood War is definitely up your alley. The SC community is definately better than the WC3 community so you can get help and learn a lot easier. SC has a higher skill ceiling so you are literally shooting for the stars, as you will probably never reach said ceiling. The barrier to competence in SC is a LOT more mechanically stressful than WC3, but you can manage to get by without having as much game-play knowledge. And on ICCUP, cheating is controller rather well.

Not much point playing the MP of BW with sc II out now. But the story is still fun. WC III is my personal favorite RTS, so I say get that WC III battle chest.
|
I voted WC3. Between the two games, I found the single player campaign of WC3 to be funner. Multiplayer is a bit funner as well if you don't want to put a lot of practice into it. BW is amazing to watch, but playing it is painful if you have poor mechanics.
|
Broodwar is an easy game if you have experience in sc2 than broodwar should be a walk in the park .
|
Just play WC3 random 4v4s with me and masamune!
|
While the campaigns in both games usually amount to "mass up army, destroy enemy base", Warcraft 3's campaign is easily the best RTS campaign I've ever played.
|
WC3 campaign is better than bw's, bw's multiplayer is better than wc3's. So it depends on how much you plan to play. Anyway both game are better than SC2, so you should like them
|
WC3 hard mode was just me building towers and defending. Then pushing out with 90 or 100 supply depending on the patch I think, more if I could use something like the Pally's Revive..
BW was me microing small amounts of units over the course of an hour long fight until I got good at the game and redid it by massing a large army and then crushing face.
WC3 is fun to play on normal mode and BW is fun to play regardless.
|
You can't really choose between them. They're both classics in my mind
|
I'll vote Warcraft III. It is, and will forever be the game I love the most, and I want everybody to love it as well ^^. But really, if you can, try playing both WC III and BW simultaneously like I am now. These two are the pure essence of Blizzard, the best of the best

War3.
BW will make you want to punch a hole through your computer screen. Though the unit pathing is not amazing in War3 either, at least it's not completely stupid.

Brood War even though it's 15 years still remains to be one of the most freshest games out there. Also, replaying to Sawamura's comment I will have to respectfully disagree as I think that if you know BW, Sc2 should be a walk in the park, not the other way around. I haven't played WarCraft 3 so I can't comment on it, but I have seen it, and I think StarCraft has a classic balance and simplicity that makes the game what it is.
