EPTWelcome to my attempt to blog, and thanks a ton for checking this out! This is going to be a post mostly about me, so if you don't care about a random gamer who has no significance in the gaming world who will discuss mainly himself, I suggest you carry on. Sorry!
So seeing that I am attempting to start a blog, I figure I may as well let you know some stuff about me. In SCII, I am a NA gold (Gold Master ofc!) zerg, by the name of Snorlax, a quite original name. I have been playing for about a year, if you cut out all the time when I went on month long hiatuses. I try to stay informed: I watch day9, Husky, plenty of streams, go on TL (obviously), r/starcraft, and try to dedicate myself to to world/community of Starcraft as much as I can. Getting gold was the latest and greatest step in that. However, this can prove to be difficult for me, as you will soon learn why.
Well, now for real life. I won't give away my name or location for fairly obvious reasons, but what I will tell you is that I am also a Senior in high school. I take school seriously(-ish), and take as many rigorous classes as possible. Heck last year, I took 5 AP classes, and this year, I'm taking 4 APs and an Independent study in Math (for those of you who don't know what AP classes are, they are basically just really rigorous classes). Additionally, I am on the math team, the jazz band, and the chess team. Basically, I am a math geek. Heck, since 6th grade, I have gone to math camps each summer. So as you can imagine, life is pretty busy for me (compared to a lot of highschoolers, at least).
In addition, next year I am headed off to Harvey Mudd College, the alma mater of Sean Plott, and a fantastic STEM school (the fact that day9 went there is a complete coincidence, HMC was my first choice regardless). HMC is infamous for the amount of work they give, so life won't get any easier for me in the future. And still, I attempt to balance Starcraft into my life.
I'm sure you are asking, "So why do you attempt to play Starcraft? Why do you clog your already busy schedule with more time-suck? And why do you complain about how busy you are?" Great questions, dearest reader! I'll see if I can answer to your fancies.
I play Starcraft because I find that there exist no video games which can trump it in many categories.
--It is perhaps one of the most difficult games to play well, often being described as playing League of Legends or DotA by controlling all five characters or heroes at once. The combination of micromanagement and micromanagement has always fascinated me, and I find few other games implement a mixture of that as well as SC. I enjoy the fact that much time has to be dedicated to actually get good at it, though to be honest, I haven't really figured out why yet.
--In addition, I find that Starcraft has the potential for extreme strategy. I am a complete sucker for strategies, and perhaps one of the most fascinating components of Starcraft is that there are three races. This means there exists three times as much strategy, once for each race, where each has their own playstyles, mechanics, and units. With a constantly changing metagame too because of the constant innovation from the pros, my poor mind can't resist.
--Also, Starcraft's community, for the most part, is FANTASTIC. For a game with such a large following, I find myself reveling at how helpful, kind, and entertaining so many people can be. You guys are the best. Pat yourselves on the back, guys. I've played a lot of games, and witnessed a good amount of communities, and many times, it is not the game that makes me quit, but the players and community. SC's community does the opposite: it keeps me in. Streamers, teachers, casters, pros, and fellow lower level players keep me invested in this world which has been created. Love all you guys. <3
--It's fun. Perhaps the most fun. Enough said.
--I have good friends who play Starcraft with me, and basically none that play any other game. We have a school clan, and mess around together on Phantom Mode (sorry, guys who hate partiers. We try to stay fair), Nexus Wars, and so on. One is even a Master League Zerg, and he teaches me on occasion.
I'm sure there are more reasons too, but I'll come up with them later.
Why do I clog my schedule? I don't know, I guess I just like playing Starcraft I guess? Part of it is that I desire to one day be a Master, or even a GM (and I don't mean Gold Master). That's what everybody wants though. Yet, I figure that if I enjoy playing it, it isn't a timesuck at all. It is a good experience. My parents disagree, and they bring valid points. But when I see Starcraft, I don't see just another video game. I see something much more complicated, much better. I see a community which helps itself, elevates itself to become the best it can be. I see a game which constantly evolves without any actual changes in coding. In short, I see something which deserves respect.
Why do I complain about my schedule like a little b****? Beats me. Maybe I am a whiny little b****. I hope not. O.o
So what is this blog going to be about?
Mainly what I intend this blog to be is going to be about trying to become a better Starcraft player with such a 'busy' schedule. Basically, it is me telling my life of Starcraft. This hopefully provides an interesting point of view of a Starcraft player: not one of a master who plays Starcraft professionally, but instead, a nooby gold zerg who tries to squeeze in time to play whenever he can. You can expect this blog to have a lot of anecdotes, and hopefully, ones you find interesting. Of course, there will still be other stuff though, like rantings, ravings, randomness, and retrospection. I'll try my best to fill this blog up with interesting content, giant walls of text which provide interesting, unusual thoughts about various topics.
