Lovely work, I'd love to hear about how you built your Youtube channel into the behemoth it now is!

haha on youtube, channels like mine (over 100k subscriber, 15million view) is more like a medium sized house pet, It's super nice to have one and people might notice it run around when they come over. But those numbers are not behemoth on youtube and is a very small fish in an ocean.

A behemoth channel is something like what totalbiscuit, huskystarcraft have. 3/4 of a million / close to one million subs and god knows how many total views.

About 75% of my channel's subscribers comes from years of slow audience building. the other 25% thanks to TL/Nazqul/TotalBiscuit/Husky/my frd rob/ helping (by helping I mean pretty much they did the total lifting) when I won that on-the-rise-contest and had my channel spotlighted on youtube. That gave my channel a boost in a single day equivalent to what it gains on its own in 6 month.

Glider has over 14 million views on Youtube. I think that qualifies as more than "little exposure and attention".

That's nothing compared to what other YouTubers make on the back of far, FAR less effort and talent, but I digress. I'd still have expected his videos to be more popular simply by virtue of the realism they portray, or other interesting factors like using two hands, using salt, using a ballpoint pen and so on and so forth.

Thanks for the kind words. the thing about youtube right now is how much it favors videos that are targeted toward kids/teens, who are also the demographic that tends to have more free time and more likely to share videos (but valued relatively less by advertisers), thus making videos viral / ranked higher, which in turn gives the video maker more views/rewards, which then allow them more time to make more videos, and the circle continues. One of the main reason Youtube's demographic is much younger than internet average.

my channel's viewer demographic is more grown up, over 80% is over the age of 24 and half over the age of 30. so mostly mature working people, a demographic that should be valued more, but ironically because my channel has the type of video that appeals more toward adults/busy working people, they tend to spread less and be viewed less. Youtube is competing with TV advertising in a sense by trying to bring on board more blue-chip company advertisers (the real big boys who really only knew and trusts TV), but their current system doesn't reward channels that target people with purchase power. Right now pretty much the sole determinant of how much reward a video maker gets is the number of views, not the like/dislike ratio, nor demographic data (those does help, but not too significant). This is one of the reasons you see all the networks pop up on Youtube that partners can join. The networks don't really produce content, they just the middle guys matching the advertisers and content creators, and get paid handsomely for it.

If I really just want to grow my channel and get more financial reward, I could have spent 1/10th of effort, doing simpler drawings with themes that kids like, and it would grow much faster on youtube. But you just have to do what the heart wants! plus it's not like I don't have a good audience base already. This is not a rant by any means, Youtube is just changing super fast and have over millions of partnered channels, understandably impossible for them to manage everything perfectly. But imagine if I have a lot more viewers, I could do free portraits for people every week, right now I have to spend my time doing other jobs, and squeeze time in to plan and make a decent YouTube video.

Thanks for the detailed reply. Do you think there is a platform out there that suits you and your demographic better? Do you wish for one to be able to be competitive with something like Youtube? Stick to the outstanding stuff that you do - it's appreciated.

Well the fact is, Youtube is to online video what Google is to online search. It is the 4th largest site in the world based on daily unique visitor and climbing fast, behind only google.com, yahoo.com and facebook.com. And with the audience base I already have on it, right now there is no where I can reach a broader audience than on YouTube. (just for those who are curious Dailymotion.com is 2nd place for video hosting, but next to youtube it's a zergling vs ultra (and not even a normal ultra, one of those boss ultra that was in single player mission)

Overall I'm quite happy with it and they recently contacted me again regarding some kind of partner out reach program, I'll have to see what comes out of it. Besides that it's pretty much what you said, I just stick with the stuff I like to do, not worry too much about anything and continue make videos that ppl can relax into.

Man I remember that fishy contest and how tense it was until the last moment. It felt good to see now only passion shine through and triumph, but also a part of the gaming community rallying together and doing something for the greater good.

I absolutely love your mindset though. This topic has derailed just a bit (not that I'm not responsible for it hehehe) so to bring it back I'll say that I support your decision to follow your passion and I feel that as long as you do so, TL will also support you. Glider Hwaiting~~

Glider, what a pretty portrait.

By the way, do you know Kelvin Okafor? He also does hyper-realistic pencil drawings and had some large-scale media-coverage in the last two weeks. In fact, his story went around the world. His style looks similar to your own pencil drawings, however, I think what really got him famous is his backstory.

I don't really follow the art world too much actually.

I don't think my drawings are hyper-realistic (it's not even close actually). There is a difference between realism and photo-realism described in the article. Photo-realism is just a process where people basically copy photos pixel via pixel, you can easily tell if someone is doing this by the progressing steps they take to draw the picture. It usually start with a total and complete outline of everything, then they meticulously copy the photo pixel by pixel, section by section, like a printing machine, it does require a bit of technical ability and patience, this on its own does have merit If people like this style, but is relatively easy to learn and master.

Realism on the other hand, is where the tone/detail are true to life / opposite of a cartoon) but that's about as far as it goes. The artist doesn't just copy something pixel via pixel but portray the drawing selectively, the result can be life-like and convincing, but will look very different from a photo which just heartlessly captures everything.

If I wanted to, I can make my drawings look hyper-realistic that you can't tell the difference between it and a photo, this is not difficult once you have a bit of fundamental tone skill down (I can teach anyone to do this in a few days, seriously), just a lot of time and patience. But my drawings generally looks very difference from any reference material I use. here is a comparison:

Now lastly I want to make a distinction in people's minds between hyper-realism and photo-realism. Different from photo-realism, the really good hyper-realistic painters, they don't just copy photos either, their drawings are usually much more vivid and has a quality, tho at a glance, looks like a photo, but look a bit deeper and it gives you a sense of something a mere photo can't ever capture - Mauro David's work is such style.

anyway, these are just my thoughts, art like almost everything else is subjective and at the end of the day if look at something makes you feel good, the mind can put whatever label on it as it likes. cheers.

Wow, no, WOW. I'm currently trying to learn how to draw using the book Drawing on the right Side of the Brain. I've never really had much natural ability for it but the exercises in the book really help so far, I didn't know I can draw as well as I can (even it's still bad lol). So, seeing you draw (first time I've watched), I wouldn't necessarily say inspirational (no offense), but it shows the insane level of skill I may one day be able to achieve if I work really hard (hmm, okay I think it actually is inpirational lol). Anyways good work, I shall watch more in the future.

w00t im using the same book to learn xD

Cool, lol.
I just finished the Picasso upside down drawing. No it's on to spiderman and the german knight.
