An Intro
I've been playing SC:BW since early 2009, and my first multiplayer game ever was on iCCup. Needless to say my first seasons I had scores like 5 wins 50 losses, I had no idea how to play, and I didn't even knew how to build the golden giant slugs back then.
Many would've quit the game for it being too hard, but not me. BW is a fun game, even when I was losing I was having fun playing it, so I just kept on playing.
But I'm changed. Before I didn't use hotkeys, today I do. Before I would bind my nexii to 8-9-0, today I bind them to 4-5-6. Before I would build 4 cannons behind each mineral base to protect my probes from mutas, today I build 2.
Yesterday I was a kid, today I'm a man. Yesterday I was D, today I'm D+.
This Battle Report is a narrative of the battle that crowned me as D+, as for I am now one step above, climbing the ladder to reach greatness.
The Game
The game is a PvP, my best matchup. I spawn as the golden protoss on top right.
My opponent is the crimson protoss at the bottom right, a D+ player.
He proceeds to build a pylon outside his main.
I plan to do a standard 10 gate 12 core opening. I'm one game away from D+, there is no reason to play risky now.
Well fuck. I scout his 2 gate zealot pressure bullshit.
My standard game plan is ruined. I've to build a second gate to keep up with him in zealot production.
But I had already built the assimilator, so I'm 100 minerals behind him.
He didn't scout my base yet, so his first zealot is heading the wrong way.
His probe made it in, I then proceed to kill it with my 4 zealots pumped out of 2 gates.
But that was a lure. While I chased down a little probe with 4 manly zealots, one crimson made it to my probe line and started killing them.
The gates were open and a flood of zealots are in my base. It's okay, I've my own of the kind.
I kill them off and begin heading to attack my opponent's base.
3 dragoons and 7 zealots vs 8 zealots. Who do you think is going to win this battle?
Not me. I have no idea how I could have screwed it up so bad, as I find myself retreating from an engagement I should've won....
The left over of the army retreats in shame.
But one of them is too honored to head back after the failure. He sacrifices himself to buy time for his comrades to head home and warn of the upcoming danger.
My army is reinforced in time thanks to him, but the enemy is already inside.
After I hold the zealot attack, it's my time to make him sweat. A shuttle-reaver made it to his main.
Oh yeah! Such a pleasing picture, 3 of his probes are down.
And then 3 more. The probe damage was mild. The real damage was done to his mind. A reaver in a shuttle can make one paranoic, insecure to move out, he is pinned down.
The shuttle take some hits, but safely gets away.
After some time he finds courage to leave his base and come attack me.
But I was prepared. Due to my initial gas advantage I was able to upgrade +1 weapons much ahead of him, and I hold his attack easily.
I feel his fear and head down to his base where he had little defenses. No gg, no skill. I put the crown on my head, today I'm D+.
The End
And that's it! Quite a work to write a BR... it wasn't an exciting game for the viewers, but it was pretty intense for me. I've been one game away from D+ previously in some opportunities, and I always break down and lose. This is the third time I get a D+ rank, but the first time I feel like I'm actually getting there.
I just hope it will last for more than one game, unlike the previous ones...
I would also like to take the opportunity and thank Kiante (or was it Sayle?) who once in his stream long ago commented that you should start building the reaver bay only when your shuttle is halfway done, so the bay is done when the shuttle is finished, making it possible to start producing a reaver right after the shuttle pops out. This kind of tips are really nice!
