Hey, i practice fencing (epee) for a little less then 2 years now. I have already become the highest ranked fencers in my club, easly beating people who have been fencing for over 10 years. But i constantly hear that fencing in our region is pretty weak. So i will go to my first international tourney this weekend.

My teacher said that even the world champion showed up at this tourney in the past (but that is more then a few years ago) ..but still, alot of top class fencers will be there. I know i wont go home with the cash prizes. But i do want to try my best and leave a good first impression. I have fenced in smaller tourneys, always finnishing top 3 the past year...but the level of fencing there is pretty weak and nothing compared to what i will face in this coming tourney.

I know there are other fencers on this forum..and i was wondering, if faced against stronger opponents, is there alot of cheese/speshul taktiks in fencing you can do? Like some all-in :D.

I tried asking my teacher, but since he doesnt play starcraft the concept of cheese isnt that clear to him :p.

I try to do cheesy moves like suddenly going for the leg (in my opinion that is alot better then going for the foot..and alot of foil fencers who switched to epee are not used to defending their legs)

Anyway, sorry if this blog is boring as hell for non-fencers, but i figured a starcraft community would be a good place to ask for speshul taktiks in other sports :D.

Yo! 4th year doing epee for me, 2nd for foil.

I used to "BAN-ZAI!!" every so often back when I was a noob, lol.

As far as "cheese" is concerned, I can't tell you how easy it is to tag people under the arm on their wrist or fingers in epee. Former foilists don't guard their arms either....

I used to be so cheesy back in the day - I had great counterattacks (extending your arm during the opponent's attack, then retreating/dropping to your knees/advancing behind him/jumping randomly in the air/sidewalking). Great fun, pretty effective (but only if you're faster/taller/bolder). You need great reflexes though, because if he gets you he gets the point and you get nothing, in fleuret at least.

You gotta mix it up to become good (and I was in my country's best region), but it still serves me
[Govie] Wierd shit, on a 6 game AP winning streak with KOTL in the trench. I searched gandalf quotes and spammed them all game long, trenchwarfare247, whateva it takes!

Yea, its amazing to see how bad some people guard their arms ;D, won alot because of that.

nice :D. I also do alot of counter attacks, im 1m 88 and i fence left handed...so thats a really big advantage in epee :D.

Btw, hows france for fencing? I hear that its still a really popular sport there? Here in belgium fencing and alot of other sports really have no future if you want to take it serious :/

What a strange coincidence, that during my first week of beginning fencing this thread pops up.

Go go go go, fencing is awesome. I hope you keep doing it, because i feel this sport is sometimes underappreciated. But its fast paced as hell, and i promise you that it will benefit starcraft (if you play starcraft atleast)., because fencing is all about decision making within hundreds of seconds, and you will get uber pro-reaction speed. :D.

Sounds like you're gonna have a good time!

I just started fencing foil 3 months ago. I took to it immediately and I am absolutely loving it. I take 3 lessons a week and fence on 3 other days a week as well. I've gone from a near sedentary lifestyle to a heavily active one. I've already made some new friends and am having more fun than I have in years. In a couple weeks I'll be going to my first local tournament.

Great fun and great exercise. My only regret is that I didn't start sooner!

Epee for 5 years!

If you're against a superior fencer you're at a disadvantage doing cute little technical things since their basics are probably better than yours. You can try to throw a lot of fleches at them, that's the closest parallel to 'cheesy play' you'll find - which doesn't mean it's gimmicky in the slightest, but you can certainly employ it that way.

It's definitely been the most enjoyable sport I've played in a very long time, the way that it's underappreciated makes its more difficult to get into, since less is known about it and your expectations are more ambiguous, but it's a lot fun. I love it's that more decision based than most sports, and if it can keep me thinking quickly like Starcraft, I'm sure I'll keep playing it with pleasure.

It's funny that you should say that.

Once me and my teammates went to an all weekend tournament that had epee on the first day and foil on the 2nd. One of my friends who didn't want to do nothing on the first day decided to do epee. And so for the whole tournament the only thing he would do would be fleche with a beat attack and hit them straight in the chest, every time. I'm pretty sure he won the tournament (or took maybe took 2nd I don't remember) but the point is because he was just much better (and faster) then everybody else there it didn't matter what he did he could score anyway.

I did foil for 10 years. Had to quit a couple of years ago because of my work. I had to move to a new area and besides having to leave my old coach, now I just don't have the time to put into training that I need to to get the results that I want. But I'll definitely come back to it as soon as I'm able.

Pah. Disengages and speedy bladework are far more interesting than just fleching every point. (*coming from one who relies too heavily on double lunges and mini-fleches* X-D)

What kind of grip did he use? The folks in our club are stuck with either French or pistol.

I'm sure it was just a crappy french grip since he had to use club stuff.

And yes I'm sure that there is much more to epee then fleching with a beat but the point was that when someone is much better it doesn't matter what they do they will beat you anyways even with "cheese".

Those are the only grips that matter anyways.

And exactly, if your mechanics are superior enough, you can just brute force through opponents, just like you could proxygate everyone to death on iCCup if you were rushing back to your previous rank.
