Hi guys,
I am moving to San Jose, CA soon to take a new job. I have no clue as to where I should live, so I'm wondering if any TeamLiquidian(s) could offer some advice?
My criteria: (in order of importance)
1. Safe neighborhood - I would also prefer that there are no bad neighborhoods bordering it. 2. Affordable - between $1000-$1300 a month for a 1 bedroom apartment. Even less would be better. 3. Close to Downtown San Jose - w/in 10-15 min drive. This is a bit more flexible if other things are good. 4. Inexpensive Asian restaurants nearby.
Thanks in advance :D!

1. avoid some areas near downtown and east san jose if possible. 2. this is gonna be slightly harder but i think somewhere in santa clara or campbell or northern san jose (near airport) would be a good bet. they are around 10 min from downtown san jose. obviously longer during traffic hours. 3. see 2 4. depends on what type you like. if you are more into vietnamese/chinese/filipino food, sticking to the east side of san jose would be a good idea. a lot of cheap and good options there. if you are more into korean/japanese/chinese food, try to veer west toward sunnyvale.
good luck

Try looking in Cupertino, Sunnyvale or Mountain View. They're about ~20mins from down town, but they're much nicer areas than just living in SJ (in my opinion). My bf used to live in a studio in mountain view for $1.2k /mo.

I recommend against that. Rent prices in these areas are pretty crazy (as you say 1.2k for studio but more likely above) and its 20 mins from downtown when there's no traffic. Traffic is really bad nowadays and it will take 40+ minutes one way from these areas to downtown during rush hour. Plus, i dont think these areas are really that much nicer than campbell, sunnyvale or santa clara. they have richer people and better ranked schools ... and that's about it. there's better non-fancy food outside these areas too. i used to live in cupertino and currently commute to palo alto but neither are by my choice.

hmmm what do you guys think about the SJSU area? Any ideas?

should be ok. some areas can be slightly rough at night, but i am sure it's nothing compared to the real ghettos in LA, NY etc. good and cheap food are plenty.

hah, I mean that those areas are nicer than just SJ. My friend is paying about $1k rent in mountain view, but he's renting a house with 2 other people. There's good food in mountain view on the castro, apparently.
Sunnyvale has a ton of korean restaurants too.

lots of college kids. I heard there's a lot of crime in that area too. :\ My friend rents a house in that area since he's still in school at sjsu.

castro is ok but it's bit too "downtown-ish" for me. too much hassle in parking to just to grab a simple meal..

Holy fuck! I cringe every time I hear about NY/CA rent payments. I only pay $560 for rent in TX. Also no state tax.
Good luck on finding a cheap apartment!

Santa Clara would be good. I live near San Tomas and Stevens Creek so access to 280 to get to downtown and school, san tomas quickly takes me to church and Asian restaurants on El Camino. Late but meh.
