I don't wanna make this a huge ass blog, so lets keep it simple.
I move out of my house the 20th, spend some time with relatives, move into my dorm at U of Illinois on the 23rd. Basically I have a week to pack my stuff. What I'd like is advice on what things I should think about bringing.
Thankfully, I'll be able to use this as a list so I don't forget anything.
In a box I'll mail to my relatives early so I don't have to pay airplane luggage price and have to drag it with me around the airport: clothes. Most of my clothes., shoes included.
I'll keep a weekender with what I'll wear between the 20th-23rd, unpack when I get to my dorm, ezpz.
Now the hard part. Here's what I have so far (bear with me, I'm literally looking around in my room)
- Laptop, phone, other personal electronics including my Das/Siberia/Mouse, Camera, watches, and calculator, bags
- EZ button/GG button
- TL Posters, (3 of them)
- Personal Items (cologne, deodorant, toothbrush/paste..), I'll buy soap/shampoo in big sizes when I get to campus
- Picture frame with some friends/family for when I get lonely.
And then I'm stuck. I could use some advice.
There'll be a minifridge/microwave at the dorm ala my roommate, and I'll be buying a TV/xbox for us when I get there.
Apart from that, what am I missing?
Much appreciated.

clothes/towels/bed sheets/good knife/water boiler/crockery/bagpack/good chair/distribution boards/desk lamp/basket for dirty linen
those are the things that come to my mind right now, and are most important to me

shower sandals, nails/pushpins for posters, baby powder for shoes, laundry detergent, quarters for laundry mat, power strip (maybe 2 if you both use a lot of electronics), linens, usually a good idea to get a space organizer for your closet (like stackable shelves or something of that sort, since usually closets are small), scissors, floor rug is usually a good thing to have, stuff to clean bathroom/room with (duster, toilet cleaner, small bottle of bleach, etc), ethernet cord for internet maybe router, school supplies are usually a good thing to bring, so you don't have to worry about them when you are at school the first few days/weeks before it starts. headphones/earbuds, bed stackers (those things you put under bed posts to raise the level of bed I used them and it helped a ton because i could fit a lot of storage under my bed), buying an external harddrive is a good idea, if you and roommate like same music a sound system would be a good thing (but only if you like same music or you would get annoyed at eachother when the other is listening to music you don't like.), movies/dvds you like to watch, maybe a few good books, nail clippers, shaving equipment, alarm clock, duct tape, screw driver, hammer, printer, flashlight, sports shoes (if you play any sports), lighter, candle (even if you don't use it in any "romantic" way, it can help keep room smelling fresh, calender, bookshelf.
As a highschool graduation gift i was given a toolbox which was crammed full of a bunch of this essential stuff. it was a way to keep it organized and reduce the space used in the dorm since they are usually small. I would recommend getting something similar, though it is not essential to have some kind of box for the important/random stuff.

I misread this and thought there were forum posters from TL that you had in your room and were gonna pack up with you to move.

Dishes and stuff if you aren't getting a meal plan from the university.
Pretty much whatever you want to bring, you should. As long as it isn't a ridiculous amount of stuff. I don't have that much stuff so I didn't have a problem deciding. You don't seem to have a lot either so I would say everything but that's just me.
I take it you are going to a university far away from home without most of your friends with you. It's a fun, new experience. gl.

Oh i forgot linens, I have them waiting at my relative's house already.
Its fine to recommend things for me to buy after moving but before getting into my dorm.

I have a meal plan, but i'll have some food stuffs available in my dorm of course. no plates unfortunately, nowhere to wash them (bathroom sinks? lol).
That's what I thought, but i wanna make sure I don't forget anything. most of my stuff is clothes and some other smaller stuff, i dont have anything big to bring really.

Blender.
not having a blender was the biggest annoyance on earth for me and with neither myself nor my roommate having a car we couldn't go buy one.

If you ever move into a suite or a place that otherwise offers a kitchen, bringing or acquiring good cooking skills will elevate you to godlike status heh. Otherwise those were some comprehensive lists and yeah some of those seem pretty unnecessary...
Hm....maybe a power strip in case you don't have enough outlets.
|
I should really edit some info into the OP, lol.
But yeah, its a 2 person dorm. I'll grab a power strip, as it is recommended.
man i wanna go already aaaa

Having an electric kettle was the biggest lifesaver for me. Sure, you can use it for things like those instant cup noodles but the biggest thing was the possibility of making hot tea whenever you needed comforting from homesickness/bad day/cold nights. Or simply when feeling sick. That brings me to point number two, bring your favorite tea with you, whether it be sent by mail to save space or directly with you. Nothing felt better after a long, hard day of schoolwork than playing SC2/watching streams with hot tea by your side and the sound of a roommate raging at LoL in the background. A very satisfying feeling indeed.
|
Tea, will bring. I don't think I can have an electric kettle, but microwaving water is good enough.
I don't think my roommate plays LoL. Hopefully he'll keep that up and I won't relapse.
I'm gonna need to find a tea thread and do some research

board games / card games / sports equipment / books / camera / art supplies / musical instruments / water guns / etc
because school + eat + shower + sleep shouldn't be all you're doing at Uni

Also hm, if you can find some, there are these compressible bags which can be useful to have. In terms of textbooks, if your class doesn't require you have the latest version, you don't have to get it. The difference between the latest and the second-latest edition can be several hundred dollars in some cases :x
|
@fishgle ill join some clubs and stuff, and work out at the gym a fair amount. ill bring water guns haha
@aerisky $600 for this semester -____-. all used, too. ill be smarter next semester, but at least for this one ill make sure im ok. but yeah you're right. worst part is that my chem textbook is just an updated version of the one i used for AP chem my junior year...and it was shit.
anyway i wanna build a shelf of all the textbooks ill be using over the years.

When i moved out i brought with me a bag of clothes (3 pair of jeans, 4 t-shirts, 2 sweatshirts, 2 shirts, 4 pair of socks, 4 pair of underwear, summerjacket and a pair of shoes), my laptop, my phone, my wallet(with condoms), a cheap cellphone (Nokia 3310), a glass, a forke, a knife, a cheramic plate, a pot, a toothbrush, deodorant, shampoo, hairwax and a sleepingbag. When i moved in to my flat i had no bed so there were one night where i sleept on the floor but i actually like sleeping on the floor so it didn't matter. The next day i bought a madrass and went to a second hand shop and bought a frame for the bed for almost no money. After that i found building stuff fun and relaxing so i built my own bookshelf and table and got away with spending almost nothing for stuff that would have cost be loads of beer bottles(wich turned out be be bad for other reasons then the economy. Failed my first exam due to heavy partying and lack of studies).

Make sure you have all your electronic chargers (phone, laptop, ipod, etc.). Bring an umbrella too.

Ignore the toolkit, swiss army knife (preferably a multi-tool) will safe your life. Your list is missing two crucial ingrediants which will let you allow to fix anything in any situation:
DUCT TAPE WD-40
Not sure how it's like over there but what I really missed when I was in boarding school for a year was actually my own soap/shampoo because the brand I loved wasn't available around there at all. T_T
Also earplugs are something I'd bring, just in case. Never know whether your roommate is gonna snore or not.

Urgs. Not sure about the hiding part, until you know how strict they actually are I'd be careful with that stuff. You never know how stupid some policies are. As a random example I was allowed to bring above multitool on a plane to London with me while the girl in front of me wasn't allowed to bring her nail file. (Quote "Oh it's not pointy and short enough, that's fine we don't count that as a knife.") >_>
I think since I'm 14 I had WD-40 wherever I lived and never regretted it. In boarding school I was fixing all those noisy locker doors/our room door. I just HATE that stuff with a passion. =D
Well, guess you're better off bringing earplugs along. =P

I second the Duct tape and WD-40. But to prevent questionable use of the duct tape, also either acquire or pack a small first aid kit. You'll probably want some minimal tools (yeah, a Swiss army knife is great, but doesn't function well as a hammer). I'm assuming that furniture comes with the dorm room (hopefully better than what I got ~10 years back), so nothing to worry about there.
If it's communal bathroom/shared bathroom situation, definitely shower shoes. If it's a "walk down the hall to the bathroom" situation, also a bath caddy or something similar. Extra towels will always be your friend. If you do wind up needing earplugs (I used to go absolutely insane trying to sleep in for my afternoon class days while the guys down the hall were cranking reggae) you're going to want to have something that can wake up you if you're using them. A good pair of headphones, because even if your roommate is your absolute best friend in the world, you don't want to listen to them all the time. It goes without saying, but if you have any office/studying supplies that you use that are unique or important, then bring them. (Special pens, pencils, Flash ruler, art supplies if you are artistically inclined.)
While thinking about this, I realize the world has significantly changed since I went to college in 95 - a lot of the things I remember bringing don't apply anymore. Stereo? Computer/iPod/phone takes care of it. Maybe you could get some speakers. Books for fun? See computer. Or maybe kindle/nook/iPad. Lots of paper - well, don't need that as much.
OH! depending on the dorm rules, you'll probably want some of that blue putty poster hanger stuff or other non-putting nails in the wall hanging solution. (Also, regarding sharp pointy objects - read the policy, but also check with RA's / security. My university also had a "no weapons" policy. The SciFi club went to Medieval Times - and the security officers didn't blink at people bringing full size halberds back into the dorm.) If you are the kind of guy to run/play sports, etc, you might want to bring a frisbee, soccerball, rollerblades, skateboard, bike, etc. Also in reference to hiding stuff... you probably should get some kind of artfully concealing repository. (Like the "soup can" safe, booksafe, etc. Or just, y'know, a safe.) Not because you would necessarily have things to hide, but it's a good idea to have someplace to stash jewelry, cash, or important documents. You're not the only one with a key to that room - and it's better to be a little safer and not need to have been than to be trusting and then find out the emergency credit card was just used at a strip club by a maintenance guy. (I'm somewhat paranoid, but even if it's 1 in 10000 chance, it can suck a lot.)

bring lots of paper towels, all purpose cleaner, those hand wipes you pull out of a cylinder, and contact solution/lens holder if you typically have lots of people visit you
lots of gum, nyquil, dayquil, tylenol, ibuprofen, allergy stuff if you have allergies,

mini-vacuum, extension cords, and a little table or platform you can hide but bring out into the center of the room when needed

Tide Stain Remover (the wipes or pin) or similar brand; cause I don't know one college student who doesn't need them from time to time. Foam mattress topper, dorm room mattresses are notoriously uncomfortable. Buy 1 or 2 of these, could be done before or after you get to school.
