Temporarily moving for work at CERN

Hello TL, I have been offered to move to Switzerland/France for the winter by my advisor, and I am not 100% sure if I want to go. I am mostly making this blog to fish out any other TLers who work for CERN (I know you're out there!) and can offer up some of their experiences as to what it is like being there, especially in the winter.

Currently, I am like 95% sure I am going to go, but it seems that I need to figure out how long I want to stay. Basically I could go from October - December, or October - March. I want to go for the entire winter, but I don't know if I would go crazy from not having any common interests with coworkers, or any place to go to meet people around my age (I'm 26).

What is it like at CERN, and what is there to do near or around there in the wintertime? It looks to me like there is some skiing/snowboarding nearby, which would be a plus, but this only comes from looking at a map, and everyone I know who has gone there for work was not into winter sports, so they didn't have much to offer in that category.

Also anyone here that lives near CERN, or has in the past who could help me out with better understanding what it's like to live out there, it would be greatly appreciated if you would drop an opinion as to whether you liked/hated living there and why.

That sounds like it'd be a unique and interesting experience. You should definitely go, and I think the longer option would be even better!

The better stations nearby Geneva (in Switzerland, don't know for France) are something like 1h30 from there

It can cost quite a lot of money for a daily pass depending on the station (~50-100 CHF) so if you like skiing a lot, you should take a monthly/season pass, it generally becomes a good deal after a while

Also you should definitively go work at CERN and stay from October-March

You should stay longer and use your Schengen visa to tour western europe. You could meet some TLers too.
