Well-said. With the advent of modern-day media, fame is something rather miserably easy to attain. Congrats on the win also esgthebear

Hm for me...I've been on the news in 2nd grade I think, reporters interviewing us and our teachers and we showed them our hermit crabs.

I've also been in my local newspaper once for being part of a research program during the summer of one of my high school years. Got an article for working in a biochem lab at UC Davis and was really surprised when school started again because apparently some of my teachers actually read our town's newspaper, which is really small.

Also have performed at Carnegie Hall as part of a music competition/festival thing.

I think I actually may have more completely random small moments of fame actually, but those are three I can remember.

As always, great job and enjoyable read Maybe break up more paragraphs, sometimes it hurts my weak little eyes ;__; but otherwise of course amazing blog again!

I make signs and go to MLG events, so I'm on stream a lot. Cliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiide and I made it to the front page of reddit SC2. That was pretty cool.

"They don't realize that there are BILLIONS of people in the world and that the likelihood of them becoming a celebrity is about the likelihood of a mobile home burning to the ground because a menorah tipped over inside."

I really hope I've never been on Tv. Won't have been something good if I have.
When you came along so righteous with a new national hate, so convincing is the ardor of war and of men, it's harder to breathe than to believe you're a friend. The wars at home, the wars abroad, all soaked in blood and lies and fraud.

Nope, but close! I'm in Norcal, somewhere between the east bay and the bay area (no big cities where I live per se, but San Francisco is a 30-minute drive without too much traffic.

Holy shit. You can actually play that game competitively? Wouldn't the person with the best pokemon always win? Or is it balanced... Also...when you say something like "My Squirtle BUBBLEBLASTED your ass!" How do you know how powerful the bubbleblast was?

Hmm will in a nutshell, pokemon actually has a formula behind it. So each pokemon has base stats and you can also increase each pokemon's stats by training it by defeating certain pokemon--these trained stats are called EVs, or earned values. Each pokemon has a set amount of EVs (for example, for attack) which it gives upon being beaten. It's sort of complicated to explain in one go, but it's not too bad. There are also IVs, for inherent values, I think, which are random for each pokemon and also boost stats essentially.

Basically, yes, it's balanced. You get tiers of pokemon called Ubers, Overused, Borderline, Underused, and Not Used in order of power. And each pokemon's inherent abilities, moves it can learn, effectiveness against other pokemon etc, creates a competitive environment with a metagame and everything.

Also noticed you semi advertising this blog entry. If it was supposed to be meta for "forcefully making yourself famous" in a way, GG

Completely agree with the fame and tv bullshit. I think it's appalling what kind of talentless hacks are parading around these days. For shame modern civilization, for shame!

great read. And so true! Everyone wants to be famous, but nobody wants to really put in the effort.

For me, I ended up being the first person in my country to repolymerize non-distilled, depolymerized polytetrafluoroethylene as a research project during my final year of engineering at university. Took months and months of work. Sadly I'll never really get credit for it since I was working under a lecturer's supervision (something to do with a contract I signed when applying for varsity), but I still feel good about it :D

Nah, don't think I ever will. My lecturer will probably write a journal article or something on it, and I might be in the acknowledgements or something lol. Personally it was great experience

When I did an year abroad during high school and ended up in a small town in the US with a population of about 2000, I became kind of famous. It was a big deal that a foreigner had come to visit and stay there I made the local newspaper a bunch of times (news about the foreigner and varsity stuff), but pretty much everybody made the newspaper there ^^
Probably the biggest "moment of fame" was when I was asked to make a speech at graduation. Besides the principle and the valedictorian I was the only one given this honor. So for 5 minutes several hundred parents, students and teachers listened to me (and I made it into the newspaper again^^).

You had told me that your next blog would talk about fame in the modern society, and you described it very well.

I guess that at least subconsciously they know they have no talent and no chance to become famous, so the illusion of a lottery gives them some hope.

I'm glad I don't own a TV for over 10 years.

I was esoterically famous in a manner of speaking. I was one of two students at my school to qualify past the AIME (math thing), but i had taken it at the place where i got tutored. So, when my school made the school-wide announcement that someone made it to the USAMO, they left out my name. But all of the 'math' people' knew.
