fuck me. sophmore year comes and goes and before i know it i bombed my ap chem final with a 64. bombed every final (thats just what i usually do for some reason) and end up with a 92.3 gpa at the end of the year.

worst part: college i want to get into is john's hopkins. Yeah, no way ur gonna accept a student that has a shit gpa and a shit ap chem grade. fml.

is there anyone out there who can help me with this process? going into junior year, taking 5 ap classes... the only thing i can do i actually try in my classes this year... w.e. sorry i put you guys through this. my life is gonna train wreck soon...

A 92.3 actually isn't bad at all for Johns Hopkins if you have decent test scores. I know plenty of people from my high school that got in with around 3.5 but with ok SAT and AP scores.

Stop freaking out and do better next year if you feel like you can.

considering ap chem is considered definitely the harder ap's (with maybe like physics c e&m) I don't think a bad final grade in ap chem actually matters towards acceptance, especially if you're a sophomore. Hopefully you didn't just get a 1 or something on the ap chem exam; I know my ap chem class a bunch of good students (juniors + seniors) stopped caring and all got 2's and stuff when they could have done better. And that's more significant for the juniors than a sophomore who maybe just had one bad course.

and clearly your overall gpa is fine, so it can't be that bad of a course grade. Just have a good junior year.

I'm younger than you, but not by much.

I bombed my end of the year test in one subject. My advice?

Stop caring and move on.

92.3 GPA? What?

Or did you mean 2.3? At any rate, junior year matters the most for admissions; making sure you are doing more than just studying for school also helps a lot.

Oh man, it only gets harder. As praetorial put it, stop caring and move on. Give something your best and if it falls short of expectations, then don't worry about it.

Life goes on man. Live it.

How is that possible? What were you crazy good at?

Anyway, you have two more years don't worry about it too much. You should try though, there's no special medal for getting through it with as little work as possible. There's nothing more important at this point in your life than school, its essentially your full time job

You mean you are NOT supposed to try in your classes and expect to get good grades? You can just take regular classes instead of AP if that's what you want.

Not being too preoccupied with GPA and doing things I enjoy, honestly. Same in college (although it's easier to get good grades there because you get to choose which classes you take, and I ended up taking courses that interested me). I ended up applying to three schools (Duke and two in-state schools) and figured that if I didn't get into Duke, I'd be happy at IU or Purdue as well.

Seriously, I think a lot of people are too concerned with just one aspect of whatever it is they're doing and don't remember to have fun along the way. By no means am I advocating dropping everything for the sake of a cheap thrill, but some of the most successful people I know aren't the uptight type-A personalities that everyone envisions as the ones who get good jobs and end up "successful."

EDIT: The whole notion of what society defines as being successful is another story altogether.

i had my 4 last year and this year ( just graduated)

it happens, just let it go. if you havent done SATs, start prepping. If you havent done anything for extra curricular, you have all summer. Grades are nice, and yeah if you have amazing grades you'll get into places, but just the same they want you to be a great person for college. dont just obsess over, like Empyrean said, one part of your education. there's so much more to learn than material, even beyond study habits and all that other stuff.

i agree with Empyrean. wish someone had told me before I realized it myself. go enjoy yourself.

also

this is me too LOL. i had a few math A's but God help me fuck math -_-

finished #26 (keke kinda proud i clutched the last 5 spots but it doesnt really matter), going to UIUC in the fall. The only students going to "elite" schools from my school are top 3, all 4.0 unweighted and they're at berk, UCLA, UCLA respectively. # and 2 were accepted to both. everyone else is going UCI (nearby) or whatever and staying home. I was the only one to get accepted out of state (because i didnt apply to ONLY out of state privates) and will be going. the person that got me to apply to illinois? a friend i met online

go have fun, meet people. you never know

That's still an A-

I think my GPA was close to yours. Maybe slightly higher since I only got 2 C's in high school. I took 5 AP's in Senior year. You just have to study a lot to do well in them. Lots of practice. But then I went to College, and I started bombing classes. I didn't go to all(read many of) my classes either but we had 30 hours of class a week, group meetings, and assignments to work on. My GPA plummeted to a 1.6, class average 2.3 and now I don't feel like anything I did in high school really mattered much. I don't really keep in touch with any of my friends from high school either since I went up North to study.

What seems to matter are the people I'll continue to be friends with after college, and the things I learn, and decide to use for my future.

Also I started failing courses in college, and I just got on probation. Don't be like me. An 80/high 70s may seem bad now, but there are much worse things that can happen. Your high school grades may influence what colleges you can get to, but you want to be sure that you're going to the right college for the right reasons, and that you have an idea of what it's like at that college. Don't come to UofT for computer engineering. You'll think it'll get better, but it isn't worth the stress. If I were to do things over I would look up the retention rate of every college you go to, and only pick ones that have a high retention rate for your program (95+%). If the retention rate isn't shown and the people on the phone don't tell you, then just don't go to that college.

And I hope you're having fun and learning. High school was an amazing time for me.
I think in our modern age technology has evolved to become more addictive. The things that don't give us pleasure aren't used as much. Work was never meant to be fun, but doing it makes us happier in the long run.

Yo dawg, just finished my junior year so I got some advice for you:
1). Read the chapters for AP US History. Believe me, you will need these chapters read to get an A in the class. Do it 5 minutes before class, the night before, or the day it's assigned. Just read it. I finished with the highest grade in all of my teacher's APUSH classes that year, it's because I read the chapters.
2). Stuff happens. You bombed your AP Chem final? So what. You have a 92.3 gpa (are you talking about like a 92.3% in the class? o.0). So what. It's already too late to change the past, the only thing you can change in the present and the future. Nobody's life is perfect, and neither will yours be. Pick yourself up because the train to get into John's Hopkins has already left the station. When bad stuff happens, shrug it off and learn from your mistakes and move on. My junior year I took 7 IB and AP classes first semester and 8 second semester. Needless to say, I did not get all straight A's. Life sucked, but it also happened to be the most interesting year of my life. You should do what other people have posted in this thread, enjoy life. I got along junior year by watching anime once a week and playing LoL, and eventually making new friends. My friend got through by watching an episode of Dr. Who every week. In life, stuff happens. And stuff is good.

Also, the fact that you have John's Hopkins as a goal is a good thing. It's something that you want to achieve and will help you. It should be your main motivation to succeed when all else fails. When you make a goal, go for it all the way.

he might mean 2.93 gpa lol

your #1 is fucking good advice

the best part about the hell of all those AP classes was suffering with all your classmates. it really felt like something else to bond with them through that. i suffered more than i intended (aka excuse for procrastination) just to suffer with them

although its not really suffering

Now I feel lucky that my HS forces students to take Honors Chemistry before AP lol, I'm taking AP Chem next year. As others have said, move on. There's nothing you can do at the moment to change it, so stop worrying about it. Your GPA may be messed up, but you're still fine. Do well in your next two years, don't make the same mistakes again, and you're fine. If you just tell your college that you're applying to, "This was one of my first AP classes. I didn't do as well as thought I would, but it served as a wake up call to me that I need to work harder. That's why I did so much better in my last two years," you probably fine imo. Tons of people perform poorly at first due to just being kids.

thanks a lot empyrean. helps me a lot.

thanks for the advice people. the only problem is that my parents push me so hard. and they think its the end of the world if i dont get like 95+ in every class, or at least as an overall GPA. and i always tell them its not the end of the world but they never believe me... sigh...
