Team Liquid detrimental to your SC2 performance?

Hi all, I wanted to share this thing with you. I used to go on teamliquid everyday and read many guides on here and watched streams daily. However, my internet crashed for a few days and I was out of my daily Teamliquid. It felt crappy and I was desperate for some more knowledge in SC2. Whe n I got the internet back I didn't go straight to TL though, I went straight to SC2. I played some games and I broke a huge losing streak and replaced it with 7 winning streak.i was stuck at diamond for a very long time and had a bonus pool around 200, i spent it all in just 2 days after I stopped looking at teamliquid!

The lesson I learned is that this website is very helpful occassionally and EXTREMELY entertaining no doubt about that, but most of the time, I think yourbetter off on your own when trying to improve becausethis site gave me so much information at once that it gives me a tunnel vision. Just coming here now makes me paranoid because I'm afraid I will lose this clear sight of SC2.

Please. take no offense, this is just what I learned.

No, it probably doesn't have any correlation.

It's not uncommon to have 5-10 game win streaks followed by 5-10 game losing streaks and have it repeat.

Think about this: why would TL make you play worse? There is no reason why. You're overthinking this.

I think you're confusing:

"I spend so much time on TeamLiquid that I never spend any time actually playing StarCraft"

with

"I don't learn anything helpful on TeamLiquid so it hurts my performance in StarCraft."

The only way TL would have you playing worse is if you are listening to terrible advice, which is a possibility. There's a reason why you pay close attention to the blue-highlighted pieces of advice, and disregard most of the newer posters. If you're saying that because TL offers "so much information at once" you get worse and worse at SC2, and you support your idea with the evidence that you just broke a X-loss streak because you took a break from TL...I'm sorry, you haven't laddered enough. It's so common for me to lose seven or eight games in a row, and then go another win-streak just as long. It's completely unrelated to TL.

True, but I would argue that too much of either thing could greatly affect one's "get the fuck outside once in a while and live" time.

TL is what you make of it. If you spend the time learning strategies, builds, tactics, etc. you will improve. If you make practice partner friends, you will improve. If you learn to learn to stick with it, you will improve. TL can help or hurt depending on whether you take sound advice, I suppose, but all in all being part of TL shouldn't really be to your sc skills' detriment provided you're here at least partially for sc and aren't silly.

Exactly. Don't be superstitious about TL.net or any other website. Sometimes, you just need to take a break from laddering to slow down, because it's very demanding.

Also, think about this:

a = 1
b = 1
c = 1

If you subtract a from b, the variable c is unaffected. The variable c remains constant, even if you "feel" as though it has changed. The interaction between a and b have nothing to do with c.

In this same case

a = your time
b = your ladder success
c = teamliquid

Teamliquid remains constant, whereas your time and ladder success have fluctuated in value.

Correlation does not imply causation. There are so many other factors that were at play when you broke your losing streak that its pretty difficult to declare a causal link between not browsing TL and playing SC2 better. There is definitely something to be said about actually playing the game versus just reading guides, but directly linking your performance to whether or not you read some threads on a forum is kind of silly.

Yah... teamliquid probably had nothing to do with it.

Ever hear the saying about you don't know what you have till it's gone?

My guess is that you were yearning to play StarCraft2 because it was "taken away", a thing you once took for granted or felt frustrated with. Your mindset was more than likely much more excited and positive since you couldn't play for a few days after normally playing daily or reading about it daily.

Positive mindset = good results.. a similar thing happened to me after taking a week off of ladder. My record for the day back was 10-3

It's not TL, it's "not wasting time looking at kittens on the internet and actually practicing".

I know that for the next month I'm probably going to have no internet. And after that I might also have no internet. So I figure I'm going to get a shitload of offline practice because I won't actually have anything else to do with my computer. I might also go to the gym more.

Team Liquid was the factor, but you guys are right, I listened to really bad advice from people who are bad at the game. It's my fault for listening to them at first place, but my gosh, it's making me angry. I can't believe I was stupid enough to follow really shitty advice. I'm realizing I listened to so much crap from Team Liquid. Almost all of the guides are pure garbage for me even some of the ones from recommended threads thread.

Sigh (because like almost everyone else I too believe visitng TL can't really be a factor in playing worse), for the sake of argument could you at least tell us what 'bad advice' from TL you were following? Maybe you're right, but hopefully that sort of thing should be weeded out with the new stricter guidelines coming into place in the strategy forums.

lol I knew this made no sense from the start. I just wrote it because I felt like it, but really, TL does have some shitty parts that I wished I wouldn't have read.

Overall TL veterans do a pretty good job of smacking down on shitty advice, typically along the lines of "lol this will not work most of the time because ________, rather, you should _________"

I did pretty shit in Gen Chem this semester. Studied really hard for the first two tests and got under 80 on both of them. Barely studied for the third, got a 89. Kind of listened to some friends studying for the final, got a a 94 on it. Goddam, if only I had started not studying earlier. (for reference, I'm usually an A student)

Think of TL as merely a higher concentration of Starcraft information. Yes, we like to think we're better than Bnet (and we probably/ definitely are). So what? Let's say 99% of info on Bnet is shit and we're twice as good. That still means 98% of info on TL is shit. I'm pulling numbers out of my ass, but you get my point.
