I've been feeling like I should dress a little nicer recently. Somebody informed me I should look at /r/mfa. After figuring out what the heck that meant...

I located many pictures like this. Ok. Wtf. you look a bit like a tool. Maybe I am just entirely unstylish, but you look a bit like a hipster fool. The shoes don't make any sense with what else you are wearing.

Then people say that this is all too darn loose. Sure, maybe a bit, but it's normal looking. And the tight jeans and tight dress shirt and narrow as heck tie? What does it accomplish. It just looks stupid. I have talked to friends, we all think it is stupid. Yet in this small circle it is considered to be "the thing." You mustn't wear a short sleeved shirt, you must ROLL UP SLEEVES.

Oh, and random stupid leather watch with that. wtf.

And everybody wears beige. With brown shoes. It all costs a ton. You wear it everywhere. And it's oddly fitting tight in shoulders jacket.

I DONT UNDERSTAND MFA. THEY ALL LOOK LIKE ARROGANT HIPSTERS WITH TOO TIGHT TOO SHORT CLOTHING

I don't mind a sweater and slacks, a sweater and jeans. I don't mind a watch. I really do enjoy a well fitted suit. But for some reason I enjoy more traditional stuff. Which is looked down upon by "fashion" Dunno.

A real suit

I don't know what I ought to wear day to day. This looks real hipster. But I look really boring jeans tshirt right now. I guess I can't have it both ways.

On the other hand, I need to rent a tux for ball. Dunno exactly what to rent. Have reservation, but ought to go. Unfortunately I'm still in children's sizes so choices will be limited.

Governing merits aside, Obama can wear a suit.

short sleeves and shorts w/ sneakers is perfectly fine but not all the time ! just learn to accept the current fashion trends. slim/well fitted clothing makes sense to me since you look more neat and clean as opposed to baggy loose clothing.. i don't really understand what you have against them ;P and while hipsters may also be wearing tight clothing, not all tight clothing is hipster fashion. or something like that.

suits are cool too, but imagine a casual day out..you're not gonna want to wear a suit.

i guess you could just get less tight fitting versions of sweater and jeans..
short sleeve tshirts are lame btw. HEEHEE

Not to digress, but what does the "mfa" in "/r/mfa" mean?

And I honestly believe more in wearing pants and ordinary shirts. And no watches, please; my phone has one, thank you. Or maybe I'm just being to utilitarian with what I wear? :D

Its weird, out of my entire friends/acquaintance circle, I can count the number of people who wear watches on one hand - including me. Its weird for me not to have the weight on my wrist. I'm so used to being able to check the time by just looking at my wrist, that not being able to feels odd.
And my brother thinks its the weirdest thing that I own multiple watches.

Never understood modern day watch wearing when every single person that needs to know the time has a phone in their pocket which is just as easy to get to.. *shrugs*

For a little bit, I didn't wear a watch as the one I owned died and the replacement was in transit, I found a bunch of little things where I missed my watch. Stuff like:
going for a run - its a lot more convenient to have a watch than a phone in your pocket.
Swimming: obvious reasons
Waking up in the middle of the night and not knowing what time it is: Easier to hit the light button on my watch than grope around my desk for my phone
Also, for formal wear - I like wearing a nice dress watch - mostly as an accessory, but it has its uses - and I've gotten a fair share of compliments on my watch.

I think as long as you aren't wearing anything too baggy you should be OK. Honestly, for most good fashion, I just look at what Koreans wear. I think they have pretty nice outfits most of the time.

It's purely a fashion accessory, watches look good on men the same way earrings do on women. It's prudent to have different watches to match different outfits.

Anyways OP, where do you live? mfa is probably too preppy for the area that you live. Just tone it down a bit, you don't always need to be wearing ocbd's and Allan Edmonds, but wearing properly fitting clothes and nice shoes will go far.

Guy in the sweater and jeans looks fine for a casual Friday at my office. Style is about looking appropriate for the situation. It's really hard to judge any picture without context.

What would they say about the two gentlemen wearing suits at the bottom of your post? Is your point that a man with a personal tailor is going to look better than random people looking for fashion advice on the internet? You're comparing apple's and presidents.

I guess OP means everyday wear. I mean, suits I can bear during formal occasions (weddings, anyone?), but for daily wear?

In all honesty, I'm predisposed to love casual wear. No fancy sleeves or collars or whatnot.

As for watches, as a fashion accessory, yeah, it works. But not for checking the time IMO; or maybe I was born in the generation where everybody has a watch, stopwatch, calendar, calculator, and whatever accessory you can think of (even speedometer) rolled into one: the mobile phone. :D

BTW, the last time I wore a watch was around four years ago. And I kinda understand what OP said about having the feel of something on your wrists.

Seriously, no hate on wearing watches. I just don't get it 'cause I'm a utilitarian ass. :D

I wear a watch on a daily basis, however I only own one watch. (It also does double duty as the receiver for a heart rate monitor, so it can best be classified as "utilitarian".) It's very much expected where I work, because it is extremely frowned upon to even have a personal cell phone on your person. (If it's an issued device by my employer, that's better.) However, I need to be able to check the time (useful for recording when something happened) without taking both hands and hitting a button on something - I can check the time in less than a second by looking down and tilting my wrist. (Also the date, but that's really just gravy.)

Just had a thought - okay, technically I have two watches (my ex-wife gave me one for Christmas one year) but the other one has a cracked face and needs a new battery.

Then again, take any fashion advice I might have with a grain of rock salt - I wear all colors well (as long as they are black), enjoy working in a job were there is a "uniform" of sorts, and most of the color in my stock of t-shirts comes from the always fashionable and cutting edge TeamLiquid catalog.

Wear one everyday. It feels super weird not wearing a watch. Makes me naked almost.
And there is nothing more convenient. Especially when I am away from a computer. Phones you have to take out of your pocket, hit that unlock button, then lock it and put it back in your pocket. Also, it is socially unacceptable or sometimes downright against the rules to take a cellphone out at times. Watches? Just glance down at your wrist for easy time-telling. And its faster. Just a quick glance.

Did I mention that mechanical watches are more eco-friendly?

I dunno. He may have the same kind of allergy I do - hipsters give me a raging urge to vomit. It's one thing to dress well, be well read, and acknowledge that culture exists outside of what is spoon fed through mainstream media. It is quite another thing to do so "ironically", with a supercilious attitude, and assume that it places you on a higher, more rarefied plane of existence from the rest of the human race.

I assume that if you lack those negatives, you're not a hipster; just a generally decent human being. (Regardless of any horn rim glasses or fedora fetishes. I may still refer to you as a hipster in an affectionate put-down sense.)

Thank you. That's my exact feelings about watches. I told myself one of my first purchases when I'm well-off is a mechanical watch along the likes of Rolex, Audemars Piguet [but that's for stylistic reasons]
