Banner be here There are few things that any Brood War veteran will remember. The younger generation and most users of this very portal for example will exactly know what you mean when you just post 'down, down, down!' in any stream, others will understand what you mean by 'omfg power outage' if something fucks up big time, and you certainly know that everyone is Rush/Bibiane/Scan if you followed the forums in the past three years. The first thing that comes to my mind though, when anyone mentions big events, is something older. This must be one of the few things I'll never understand. It's definitely not my type of music, but it's like this dull Rebecca Black song, it helps my memory a lot. This article is inspired by Stratos' most recent blog (why the hell isn't he Banner be here2 In Summer 2003 my parents finally "upgraded our internet" (sic!), which meant 25 kb/s downstream. That was changing a lot for me, as I know was able to actually listen to shoutcasts. In my first attempt to write an introduction to the World Cyber Games I was ending with a summary of three pages on the topic "life was different". Well it was, let's just say shout casts were the best thing you had in rural Germany, there was no other way to actually get live updates, if you count out the very, very few minor updates that broodwar.de managed to post in their forums during bigger offline events. But shout casts were an entirely different experience, you had a constant flow of information. I was already pretty into 'low map' Brood War (after playing FASTEST POSSIBLE for 1,5 years) and discovered how deep the game actually was. I started to read up on several player vitas, even though I was limited to the German coverage. I didn't read much on Teamliquid, I followed only bits of SCLegacy.com and StarcraftGamers.net, but mostly for their coverage on Nation Wars. I still wasn't aware of the Koreans until Spring 2003, when ExVods.de.vu offered the first VODs for download. You can see a 'selection' of these early games on Zocka's YouTube channel. Anyhow, since I started as Protoss player I was very fond of reavers. I loved these units. I discovered that one player used them a lot, a player that was as old as I was - Socke. From there on I learned about pro Gaming, FiSheYe and the major names in the international scene like Nazgul, rekrul and so on. I was a giant fanboi of pro Gaming, due to their impressive Protoss players, even their "B-Protoss players" (like Socke or, wait for it, Draco) were insanely good. The downside? You rarely saw them play, especially pro Gaming was rather a network for the elite players, rather than a team in the traditional sense. They participated in a lot of individual events, but didn't fully commit to leagues like the BWCL. Consequently a new team appeared - the Templars of Twilight, which soon made its way to the top of the German scene. A rivalry with everything that goes along with it. But we're drifting off. Back to the shoutcasts and Socke - the first time I heard about the World Cyber Games I was stunned and thrilled. Apparently there was a pendant to the Olympic Games and it did feature Brood War! On the 23rd and 24th of August 2003 the national finals were hosted during the Games Convetion in Leipzig. You can't possibly imagine how hyped I was, I mean I couldn't go there, but Grummel, a legendary caster of the German scene, promised to set up a stream for those who couldn't come. I remember the day very well - I was sitting in my room, having a fully sized image of Lost Temple on my screen and listening how Grummel commentated the games between Socke and Cope, my favourite Protoss against the probably strongest Terran from my country. I still had only little idea of how the match up was to be played, I still tried to get used to the fact that low maps do not have endless minerals right away and that there were other match ups than PPPvsPPP. I clearly remember how the caster judged Socke's carrier micro and how disappointed I was to hear that Cope eventually defeated my favourite. Most memorable though were the comments on the forum. Other than Socke, Breakdown and FiSheYe I really didn't know anyone yet, so I was surprised to hear that one outsider was causing a minor uproar. OgerDaniel lost in the first round and had to go down into the lower bracket. He made his way through that and eventually faced Socke - and lost. | ||
