Out buying stuff at mall, go to lower level bus stop to catch my bus. Some 20-25 year old white woman sitting there, holding mixed race baby. 20-25 year old black dude arguing with her, leaning over her. She's saying "get away from me, seriously." I consider calling 911 or going over there, but don't. After 20 seconds of girl telling guy to get away, he spits in her face. She gets up, starts swinging at him. I dial 911, grab guy from behind and kind of throw him a bit (but not that hard). Guy turns around.
At this point I'm expecting to get punched or pushed or something. No. Guy reaches his hand into his jacket pocket. I'm scared. I tell him I'm on phone with police, he looks at me, starts walking away. I talk to girl after, she says it's the baby's father, I offer her to talk to police, she says no and gets on bus. I finish up with 911 and go on my way. Not sure how close I came to getting seriously hurt, as I really don't know what was going through his mind or what was in his jacket pocket.
What would you have done in the situation?
edit: is real, happened hour ago

can't tell if real story or psychological experiment... really hard to tell, I would probably be way too scared to do anything, but it wouldn't sit right with me to stand there good on you to do that, props

how do you know he had a knife?

Real story. I was so fucking dumb though, I grabbed the guy from behind and kind of pushed him away weakly, WHILE holding my phone. The guy reached into his pocket and I still held the phone, though maybe that stopped him from seeing me as immediate threat. Basically I half-started a fight while holding a phone. Bad call (no pun).

I don't know what I would have done, and I don't think most people would know until they are in the situation. What you did was admirable, and furthermore quite valiant. I think you did the right thing.

I don't. But he was pissed/scared (in his eyes) and his immediate response upon turning to face me was to reach into his jacket pocket. Doesn't really make sense unless he's got something in there.

I'd say you did the right and a pretty brave thing. Glad you and no one else got seriously hurrt. You just can't ever tell what someones going to do in a situation like that.

i wouldnt have gotten involved other than to call the police and notified the guy i was calling the police. especially since the female apparently started the actual physical altercation (spitting is arguable) and you could have been seen as contributing to her assaulting him.

He probably realized deep down that you where acting righteous trying to defend a helpless woman against a man + it is the father of the child. He was probably intimidated by you or he would've just knocked you out at the spot instead of acting dangerous towards you and walking away.

Well I assume he had a knife. He reached for something, and obviously was thinking about using it. That's about as close to almost stabbed as you can get. Once he pulls it and starts using it, I AM stabbed.

Maybe he was a cop and he was gonna shoot you but it would be bad if his department had another shooting this soon? stereotypes :D

I think you did a pretty good job. For all we know, he may have been planning to use the knife on the woman, so you may have saved her life.

Just to confirm, was the man was sitting on the aisle seat?

bus stop, not in bus. He was kind of leaning over her, but standing while she sat on bench.

Please just call the police and inform the problematic individual from now on (unless you are confident in your fitness and your decision).
Although the desire to help quickly might be strong, I don't think taking the most altruistic action is worth it in these dangerous but not immediately life-threatening situations.
EDIT: Well, it's all well to say this kind of thing, but yeah different in practice.
