Today i recieved this call from this dude who said he work for microsoft and my computer got hacked. I followed the callers steps to see what he wanted me to do. During the call i could hear lots of Indians speaking the same lines in the background. They got me to managed my pc and tried to tell me that generic errors and warnings from the security log was infact a virus or trojan horse. and that all 8 of my pcs were infected.
He then got me to go on the internet and tried to get me to click the main button that runs a exe on their homepage (Ammyy.com).
At this point I knew it was a scam and start asking him some question about how this is not a scam to actually hack my computer.
He transferred me on to his supervisor!!
he asked if everything was alright. I then told him that i was just playing along with his call too waste his time and work out what he wanted me to do so i could warn other people not to follow their steps. He then quickly hung up on me . (first time a telemarketer has hung up on me!).

I get these calls pretty often. I normally just laugh at them and then hang up. Not even worth my time to abuse them.
|
Ammyys actually a legit and helpful website!
|
If someone calls out of the blue about my computer, they better be from my ISP. Or else they are going to get trolled horribly as I ask them how to open my Windows console to manage my computer from the command line using WINE.
Also, you STILL should scan the hell out of your computer. There are drive-by attacks to worry about as well, which do not require you to click anything. Just to be safe, y'know.
|
Ammyy's a legit program, but these guys are trying to screw your computer through using it. Glad you caught it before they got too far with it.
|
When I am on days off I usually try to keep these guys on the line as long as possible, like I will say my computer is so infected and slow that it takes forever to start up or load screens (which gets them more excited as it makes them look even more legitimate) then I go make some food or crack a drink etc... after my record of 45 minutes he ended going "You.... sir.... are JUST THE BIGGEST COW" which made all of my efforts absolutley worth it!

I never get the internet scam ones, I'd love to mess with them.

Ammyy.com? what is it exactly, some say its legit, the OP says it was part of a scam.
|
I believe it's for remote connections, which can be used legitimately for customer support.

Although I use teamviewer so don't have any personal experience ... perfectly legit site, misused by scammers seems like the conclusion.

I realize it would be stupid and they could damage your comp/steal info but just hypothetically...

Of course it's fine to install it, but then afterwards they ask you to give them access, and then you are fucked.

If you installed the program you obviously don't know it is a virus. Once installed I expect they would do one of the following: 1) Scan for useful information like passwords, identities to sell, credit card number ,etc. 2) Install a background service that makes your computer part of a botnet. In either case you should not notice anything and even if someone tells you it is a scam they have likely already scanned for passwords, etc. and uninstalling the remote control program will not uninstall the botnet client or delete their information they already obtained. They may even install a second hidden remote access program that you do not know about.

I wonder if this is the same "company" that called me...
I had a similar experience with a guy who was calling from "The Microsoft Security Center" and that I had a virus on my PC.
Due to the fact that there are like 10pcs in my house, I was instantly suspicious... I played along with the guy for about 30 seconds until he told me to go to some website (I forget the name) and download something... at this point I said "Ok guy, I've got a good antivirus, and youre clearly running some scam, so plz dont call me again with your shit".
And the guy FLIPPED OUT.
He went on saying stuff like (and I'm not exaggerating at all) "You little fucker, who the fuck do you think you are calling this a scam! I'm gonna come to your house and kill you!"
I was laughing about it, telling the guy to calm down, and that his supervisor probly wouldnt appreciate him trying to kill me, but he kept throwing his death-threats at me, and eventually hung up.
After I called the cops (this guy was clearly insane) and some officers from the communications department came by and took a statement.
Anyways, thats my story about probly the same guys the op is talking about, I'd say judging by that, this is all a big scam and can easily be ignored =P

I wish I could have some of those calls, I love trolling telemarketers so this wouldn't be that different right?
|
Telemarketers aren't scammers. They may be annoying, but what they do is perfectly legal (advertising over the phone).
|
They are apparently calling people all over the globe, pretty impressive really. I knew it was a scam when they called me a couple of months ago, managed to confuse the guy asking which one of my computers was infected and the OS ect. Since he apparently had the magic skill of knowing that my (only?) computer had viruses, I figured he should know that. Then I got bored and pretty much hung up on him.

So do I. I often get people calling me, then telling me they're from Bell canada or something and tell me that they'll have a machine call me, give me a number and that I should give them the number the machine gave me... Which is funny because the recorded message with the number clearly says that a Bell Canada employee will never ask for that number.

They get so MAD sometimes, its weird its almost like they believe in it.... Even faced with people who can easily dispute it they will argue that its not a scam rather than just hang up and move onto the next victim...

Actually the program itself is not illegal. Dell uses this program when you call for technical assistance. They ask your permission to download this program and then explains what it does. You can see the direct control program being used when the mouse pointer on your screen is moving without your control. This program is used through network so if you get paranoid, you can just quickly take control over your mouse and disconnect the internet or uninstall the program.

Ah, I got a call from what sounded like an Indian speaking broken English. I followed him for a while, untile he wanted me to grant him remote access. When I refused, he argrued "don't you want to get rid of your infections." And I replied, "no, I sort of like my infections." He said "what?" in a very surpized tone, then said he didn't understand, and wanted me to repeat myself. I agian said, "I sort of like my infections . . . I've gotten used to them, and I sort of like them now." He sounded disgusted at the notion that I liked being infected, and said, "I don't want to talk to you." I said, "OK, bye." Total time: 9:54, almost 10 mintues. Not bad.

Well, these guys are scammers, as they do NOT explain what they are doing, and they intrude into your computer, they don't fix anything.

ROFL, I watch seinfield and I don't think I have seen that episode lmao. I never get those calls though, would be so fun to mess with them though if I did .
I would go into a freak out mode "Wait my computer is infected? What do I do?" and just act like I believed it. Ah how fun that would be
