I'll probably buy 10 tickets later today. glglgl

Well, if you get $1 worth of fun out of it, go for it?
But you're not going to win.
|
Everett Eahmer, 80, of St. Paul, Minn., said he's been playing the lottery "since the beginning."
"If I win, the first thing I'm going to do is buy a (Tim) Tebow football shirt, and I'm going to do the Tebow pose," said Eahmer, who bought five tickets Thursday. "I'm with him in honoring a higher power."
I like Tebow, I share his views, but this quote had me cracking up hahaha

No, it's a perfectly normal human response and also don't worry, the odds are in your favor.
Mike Catalano, chairman of the mathematics department at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, S.D., concedes the math is clear: The more tickets you buy, the better chances you have of winning. Better long-shot chances, of course.
They definitely needed a mathematician for this.

My magic is woven. Victory you will have. I demand 1% of your winnings or $1 million, whichever is lower.

Hmm the odds are 1 in 178 million, payout is 640 million even if it were split between several winners.... hey, does anyone have $178 million dollars I could borrow? I'll pay you back tomorrow.

On March 31 2012 05:17 mizU wrote: When do they release the numbers?
11pm EST tonight.
edit: there was a news article stating that yes, you can buy all 180 million combinations and be guaranteed to win and make like $100 million profit, but it's physically impossible to print all those tickets in time (it would take weeks), there's not enough lotto paper for it, and it would take years to go through each one.

If you buy 178 million tickets, that doesn't mean you will have a 100 percent chance of winning, right?

People in my office bought some tickets so I put in a dollar. I don't do it because I am a lotto player... just to be included with everyone else lol. If I win I will donate one million dollars to teamliquid.

Can you buy these if you live in Canada?

I hate lotteries based on utilitarianism: they take money from many poor, stupid people and give it to one person. At least it's taxed.

Yep. And on top of that, "Prizes are subject to a federal withholding tax of 30 per cent, which out-of-country players can apply to have rebated. Most states also tack on their own taxes, up to 30 per cent, according to the Star."

When I got out of college, I had a really mind-numbing job. And when you have a mind-numbing job, you start to think about things that will change that, and how you can obtain that change. I came up with this (admittedly shallow) idea that to actually NOT play the lottery is dumb. However, buying more than 1 ticket is also dumb.
The way I see it, if you do nothing, you have a 0% chance of winning. You can't win, ever. However, the difference between 0% chance and 1 in 180 million is actually quite big. 0% is zero fucking percent. Can't happen. At all. But 1 in 180 million... well shit, going from 0% to some fraction of a percent for 1 dollar, that seems worth it.
Of course, it ends there. While buying two tickets doubles your odds, the change in probabilities is so small it isn't worth it. Only going from 0% to 1 in 180 million (or whatever the odds happen to be) is actually worth it.
Generally, though, I always felt like the lottery was a scam. I've only bought like 5 tickets in my entire life, but the few times I did I had some "fun" with it, so I don't regret it.
Maybe I'll buy a single ticket.
|
I fancy the scratch games, never won any of the big prizes but usually the small rewards pay off the investment. Never tried the lottery, then again I'm just over of legal age to play the lottery, no experience!

If the ticket provides you with more enjoyment than the price, and there's nothing else that would give you more enjoyment for that price, that seems like a good purchase to me. I just wouldn't think of the probability because you won't win and that'll lessen your enjoyment.

ummm idk.
According to Wikipedia the current rules state that you pick five numbers from between 1 and 56 and then you pick one number from 1 to 46. The first five numbers are all drawn from the same machine (that is one machine with just one set of the numbers 1-56 inside) so repeats are not possible.
So the total number of possible results would be the total number of ways to choose 5 out of 56 multiplied by 46.
So to figure that, we would use the formula for combination (which ignores order and won't count repeats) which is:
n! ────── k!(n-k)!
Where n is the total number of options and k is the number being chosen.
So 56!/5!(56-5)! =56!/5!51! =55005350400
Then multiply by 46 to account for the mega ball number 55005350400(46) =253024611840
Is that right?
There are 253,024,611,840 different combinations?

$1 dollar down for a chance at 350 million seems like a worthy investment to me.

no those are the odds of winning but i think there over 20,000,000,000 combinations i mean 1/56 u get one right so then 56*55*54*53*52 then times 46 for the mega thats over 20,000,000,000 diffrent combos so no you would be at like 10% what they mean by the odds is if you were to play it long term thats your chance of winning over a period of time my guess would be around 60 years of playing your odds are 1-176 million

Mmm that analysis on why buying lottery tickets is never a positive-EV decision was pretty interesting.

Odds of winning jackpot are 176mill:1. The payoff odds are 426mill:1.
So you get positive EV for up to 2 plays.
But then again I'm not taking into account the possiblity of multiple winners so EV is maybe less...

Yea. It's too bad the Hope scholarship is going away. They keep running out of money, and since they can't require the lotto to give more money (I'm not entirely sure why - they originally donated 29% of their profits, now it's something like 19%) they keep slashing funding. Won't last much longer since tuition and new students continue to rise.
But yea, I'm thankful for all the people in the world that don't understand probability. The uneducated funded my education. :O Not that there aren't a few swell guys out there like you buying a ticket to give back.

Damn, 4/6 is still really rare. I got 3 x 1/6

3/6= 7$, 4/6=$150, 5/6=$250,000 some big differences there

posting here for the free 10 grand!

got a whopping ONE matching number on both my plays!

I heard on the radio from some lottery official, that over 90% of the possible number were picked. So there is only a very slight chance it will roll over.
But if it does...we are looking at over $900 million pushing $1 billon top end number... $500 million so after lump-sum + taxes.

And I had crappy numbers, only 1 match on my tickets.

i read that they sold 1.5 billion tickets. crazy.
|
bought 3 tickets and got zero numbers correct T.T
|
i didnt win
|
i heard there's no jackpot winner...new Jackpot could be over a billion bux...

|
ooOoo Crazy...even crazier if that was the only ticket

This is so sad. I wonder how many people that buy lottery tickets regularly look back after 10 or so years and calculate all the money they have wasted.

15 tickets, 0 wins. No problem though
If nobody won (but someone in maryland did) and the prize pool was up to over 1 billion, then technically if you buy at least ~20-25% of the tickets you bought for this drawing, for the NEXT, then you are still making positive EV lol (assuming that you are the sole winner of the jackpot, if you win)

Probably not, which is why they keep playing. I'd also wager most of these same people fall into your standard Gambler's fallacy.

He buys his class food if he wins. He obviously does it for fun. It's a stupid use of money, but not sad if it makes the guy happy.

$150 here for 5 tickets, 3 of the numbers and the megaball. Not too shabby.

the lottery wasn't a low enough chance, a particularly dangerous man such as myself is more suited to this challenge.

This was my first purchase of a lottery ticket since I turned 18. I bought 2 tickets at a gas station as I was on my way to ski trip and I hit 2 out of 6 with no mega, not too shabby for my first try. But ill probably never buy lotto tickets again until the jackpot is over $150 million haha

Better chances of getting hit by a car or strike by lightning!
|
Well I found out that my local radio station had a pool among their employees, they were 1 number off from winning the lottery. If they put 02 instead of 11, the jackpot would be split with them as well.
Still, $10,000 after taxes, $250 per employee, props to them.

You are more likely to get struck by lightning. Multiple times. In a row. You are also about 8,000 times more likely to get murdered than win.

If I win, I'll use all the money to buy more lottery tickets. Investing is the way to go.
