Hey guys,
I'm close to tears right now, disguted, horrified and itching all over.
I've just moved into a new flat, went to the kitchen a couple of minutes ago and a large insect, about the length and width of the last joint of my thumb lay on the ground on his back being very noisy.
At first I thought he was just an overlarge bumblebee, but as I sprayed it it hissed like crazy and started flailing his arms.
Now he's curled up into a tight ball, so I can't even make out what I'm dealing with here, but I'm mortally afraid that my flat is infested with some sort of insect. The kitchen window was closed over night, so he can't just have flown in.
Please advice me what do to, since I can't reach anyone to talk to at this time of the day and I can hardly type for shivering so insanely.
Thanks!
€: I think I'm unable to cope with more than one of these things, I've never seen a bug this large and I feel extremely invaded right now. If they breed someplace in my flat, I'll have to move out, but I can't afford moving again...
Here's the best picture I could get: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/7/bug2da.jpg/
€: The bug is dead, this is not about how to kill it, or how to sweep it's corpse away.

Do you have a picture of it? It's kind of hard to say what it is based on that description, but it sounds like maybe a cicada. I'm not very familiar with the type of insects that live in Germany though . It sounds like you killed it pretty well so I wouldn't worry too much. Maybe a neighbor would know what it is since they have lived there longer.
|
It's not a cicada, it's perfectly black and not nearly as slender.
|
What an odd post. Just try to establish whether it is a beetle of some sort, because what you described sounds like a beetle and beetles don't infest anything and are perfectly harmless. They have a hard shell protecting their wings and look like a Crypt Lord from wc3 in general. Also, find an image of a cockroach and compare it to the beast, because at that size, the only thing you need to fear is a roach - and yes if it's a roach you are royally screwed.

Have you read Kafka's The Metamorphosis? Clearly this was the last inhabitant of your flat in insect form, who crawled out of hiding over night to ask for help. You've just murdered him. You'd better move out before you suffer the same fate.
EDIT: Wait. Just noticed your name. Is this a troll?

This isn't a troll, and neither is it funny.

Large insect and now in some sort of ball-form? I would research siege mode and siege tanks before you move out, maybe baneling bust.
|
Well, bugs can get into places in other ways than through the window, so until you find a nest or hear odd sounds in your walls, you aren't quite at infestation yet.
And it's probably not dangerous, drink a couple of beers, gather your courage and throw it out. Don't know what other advice you expect from here? And pictures before throwing it out if you can

well google is convinced it's one of these:

Take a glass and throw that bug outside. Then check if there is food left in corners. if there's none, then it should be a random bug.

That doesn't quite fit, it definitely has wings (no, not like a speedling, I appreciate the joke, though). Also, it's not that elongated, and in its dead form, you can still make out the legs.
I'll try to get a picture, but I don't quite dare to get that near..

Picture added, it's pretty bad, though.

Just grab it with toilet paper and throw it away from home. Only if you see another bug you should be worried.
Seeing alone bug or animal does not mean infestation. And even when infestation actually happens, you take a picture of the species, go into an anti-bug shop or agency, get it identified, buy the proper anti-bug stuff and soon it's over. In the worst, most expensive case, you might need to actually pay some professionals to come and do it for you, but that's very rare.
Don't be afraid of the thing, have some humility, it's a living thing that's most likely harmless to you. Try to battle your own knee-jerk reaction, because it is in fact mostly irrational. Bugs are generally only a trouble, because they walk in dirty places and might bring some disease along (very very rare case) and just because they could populate a lot somewhere and become annoying. 90% of the horror that we all have of bugs is just irrational (I have great fear and disgust too, but I battle it).

bumble bees make ridiculously loud bass noises with their wings and that could be more intimidating than anything else
|
if you don't like toilet paper because it looks large enough to bite through into your finger, take a glass and a piece of paper, put glas upside down onto the thing, slide in paper below, then lift up closed and flip out of the window. Afterwards you can (should) clean the glass as much as you are paranoid, then you should be fine
|
Okay the chances that it is dangerous are close to 0 because you live in Germany, which has (from what I gathered) no venomous insects. If it is a spider, most spiders are not lethal, and I don't think there are many in Germany that are. From what you described, it is definitely an insect/beetle.
Conclusion: man up, go to the kitchen, grab a jar or glass or bowl. Come up to the bug and place it upside down over the bug. Slide a piece of paper under the bowl. Open a window or door leading outside. Then slide your hand under the paper. Then flip it over, and carry the bug to the window or door and set it free.
Seriously, it's just a harmless insect... What would your ancestors say about you?
|
It's not about getting rid of that singular, dead bug, nor is it about being afraid of venom...
|
On March 23 2012 22:07 kafkaesque wrote: It's not about getting rid of that singular, dead bug, nor is it about being afraid of venom... You've only seen one, right? Why assume there are more than 1? It is so large that you should have no problem spotting them.

You need to man up and throw the bug away. You're a few hundred times the size of it. It might be an infestation, but you don't know that. Until you do, just friggin pick up the corpse and throw it out.
...then go wrestle a bear or something. You know, MAN stuff.

Thanks for your understanding.
I'm usually not that much of a pussy, but I have a giant bug phobia.
It is dead and I can just vacuum it up, or sweep it out, but the terror still lingers (which, in retrospect, might sound a tad overdramatic, if you can emphasize with bug phobia).

If you are really afraid of an infestation, make it a point to get a can of Raid and spray your entire flat when you are leaving for work or school. Repeat the next day if you are feeling really paranoid or actually find an infestation.

Well...not sure if you've dealt with it already but maybe you can ask a friendly neighbor to throw it out for you if you have a phobia? Or maybe ask the caretaker of the building for signs of infestation. Seems a lot easier, people on the internet being how they are

lysol + lighter
get a cup of water and hope your wall paint isn't exceptionally old (insanely flammable)
- or just spray the damn bug with lysol. - or throw a heavy book on it. a book you don't mind just throwing away (since you're probably not cleaning bug goop off of it) -
or buy a cat. cats are cheaper than a new apartment, and that bug is big enough to attract your cat's attention.

It isn't an infestation until you see more types of the same bug ..... You will do fine get a glove or something and use a toilet paper and cover it and throw it outside of the window .
|
It doesn't appear to be a cockroach so honestly, kill it and move on with your life.
If you are really worried, take a high resolution picture and see if you can get in contact with a local entymologist at a university or museum. Idk what types of programs Germany has, but if your county/region has a local horticulture specialist that would probably be the best person to contact.
Unless you get like 2 or 3 more in your apartment in a short timespan you don't need to worry about an infestation. I'm guessing it's some type of bumblebee or cicada that just got stuck in the building and ended up in your unit somehow. Calm down and move on with your life.
|
Just a small correction about bumble bees - it seems they don't even make that deep sound with their wings, but just with the wing muscles, so they normally do it even when not flying as a warm up. You can hear the sound here, to compare: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/ca/Bombus_buzz.ogg and here are a couple of pictures: + Show Spoiler + As TheToast noted it's very common for a random bumble bee or similar bug to find itself accidentally in someone's house, especially in the beginning of the spring.

Random questions: Do you by chance have any cats? Or a garden with roses? I mention this because it could have gotten into the house that way. It sort of looks like some kind of rose beetle. They can be very large and extremely noisy, especially hissing sounds. My cats bring random shit home sometimes, ranging from large sticks and leaves, to bugs, mice and birds. One time my cat brought home a large beetle, not unlike the one in the picture. It made loud sounds, and unfortunately died (it was sort of pretty ). But if it doesn't look like a cockroach, I don't think you have too much to fear.
