So, I've been thinking a lot lately about how I could possibly make ladder more fun. I've always liked the competitive aspect of the game, and really of everything, so I wanted to focus on that.
The biggest problem for me has been the fact that ladder is simply a best of 1, doing either random shit or standard shit in the quest for points and moving up in leagues. To change this, I want to start keeping track of everyone I play, to figure out what my record is against that other player. I find that I'm playing the same people over and over again lately, and think this might actually be a decent way for me to track my growth as opposed to my opponent's growth over time. Granted, these opponents might be terrible against zerg, but who knows. 2 seasons ago I had about 250 wins in diamond league, at a 50% win rate that's over 500 games played, which is substantial, and I'm sure of those 500 games I must have played many of those gamers multiple times. Having a record of games against so and so player may be just what I need to increase my interest.
I haven't had any luck finding a team (not much call for a diamond level player who's looking for some kind of structure) and still feel that ladder is the best way for me to improve. I want to give myself a reason to ladder, and this is the best idea I can think of at the moment.
Not really looking for critiques, and this isn't necessarily a ladder fear kinda post, just sharing my idea. If it ends up working, I could see a kind of shitty league made up of 50 or so interested players, playing best of whatevers and just keeping the records of their W-L against each other. Might be interesting to see, so who knows.
I would like to hear about anything that you guys have done to improve your ladder experience though. Plenty of posts on what people do to get over ladder fear, but do you ever go into games saying "Ok, so, I think 15 hatch can work vs protoss, I'm going to try it vs every protoss I play today just to give it a shot" or "I wonder if a fast tech to lair using overlords for creep spread would be more efficient then queens". Or hell if you keep records of your games or think about whoever you play.
I dunno, whatev. <3 TL, and this blogging thing makes me kinda happy.

Oh man that is a cool idea. I have been in platinum since launch so have played some of the same people a few times. Would be cool to be like "oh man this dude and I are tied 1-1 in this best of 3" I think I am going to start keeping track.

SC2 Gears will do this for you. I agree that ladder can feel empty even when I am enjoying the competitive aspect. I've been playing a few peepmodes with some new plat and diamond friends lately. We could use a diamond Z to play with us if you're interested.

If you download sc2 gears you can see if you have played people multiple times. However you won't know if its a best of 3 until afterwards. If you have your replays saved it would be a good way to extract all that data withing a few minutes so you have something to start with.
EDIT: ^^ Dam YOU

Oh neat - I'll have to get SC2 Gears
Thanks

This isn't really fun but whenever I win a ladder match I get too eat a piece of candy and whenever I lose I have to do 50 situps. I'm trying to associate pain with losing and pleasure with winning to train myself to win.

You can find practice partners around your level and play lots of games against them. That is a better way to have a more tournament-like feel to your games.

so you get fat if you win and get a 6 pack if you lose? I'D BE RIPPED...and fat : (

I feel like associating pain with losing would just contribute to ladder anxiety, not wanting to ladder because you might lose. :/
Also noobity, are you TVnoobity from PL?
|
I was tvNoobity until the name change, PL though?
Also: I didn't know sc2gears would do this for me. I'll have to grab that.
I'm Noobity.491 if anyone wants to game ever.
I like the pain for losing, pleasure for winning thing, but I never really saw that as fun like you say, more like a good way to get better, haha.
EDIT: Oh, practice lounge channel? If so then that's me!

I tried the pushup tactic, but I became so afraid of losing I stopped playing ladder haha
