Ok this has been on my mind for the past hour and I just had an argument about my parents but basically what happened was I filled out a job application for this asian restaurant and on it,it asked for my Social Security Number and I wrote it down and filled out the rest of the application and turned it in. Right after I turned it in, I had regretted giving them my social security number because in the past my dad got his social security number stolen and someone used it to buy 30k worth of stuff.

But I thought that they needed it to do background checks and was scared that I might not be considered for the job cuz I didn't include it.

Should I go back in tomorrow and ask for my application back or wait until they call me back(if they even call me back)? I'm worried that if I do this, it might look bad on me making them look through the stacks of applications just to find my application so I can scratch out my SSN. I'm not really sure what I should do :/

Like on this site some ppl say only put your SSN after ur hired or others say my application wont even be looked at if i dont provide my SSN..

Don't worry about it. If someone really wanted your social, they'd get it regardless.

I don't know what an expert would advise, but if you already handed it in I would just let it go.

In the future you can leave it blank, and ask when you are handing it in if you need to include it (bring a pen with you just in case).

Companies have to shred their applications if they turn you down. Or they file it away so the only way would be for someone to steal it from that company. I wouldn't worry to much about it. Your family is being cautious because it happened to them.

I've never even heard of places asking for your SSN without you having been guaranteed the job, that's kind of sketchy. I wouldn't say that means they are going to do anything malicious with it, but there's a chance of course. If they were going to do something with it how would going back and scratching it out help though? They could just go to the back, grab your application, copy down your SSN, then give it back to you to scratch out.

99% of the time you'll be fine. I mean it's a credible restaurant right? People who steal SSN's off job applications don't stay in business for long if they get found out.

I could probably help you out with this situation. Just pm me your SSN and I'll let you know what to do next.

In all seriousness you probably have nothing to worry about. Just cause they're asian doesn't mean they're shifty. ^^
I get it.

they probably want it for tax reasons. but its odd to ask for it up front rather than waiting until after hire. unless this place is shady, you are probably okay though.

The sorts of people that steal ssn usually don't have to ask for it. They'll get it anyways. If you're really worried about it, get identity theft protection.

leaving it blank often gets your app discarded as they will just find the next guy who has a completed application. america is bullshit right now when it comes to finding an entry level job. i wish you the best of luck.

Well I personally fail to see the difference between giving your SSN before or after you are being hired -> you give it to them anyway? So I wouldn't worry much about giving it *before*

In addition, if something goes wrong, you'll definitely know who to blame.

Edit :

In France, employers are not allowed to ask for picture, age, marital status, origin... so when they do, you either abide despite it being illegal, or you don't, with a high risk of your application not being even looked at.

In a pragmatic way, I think you were right to give you SSN if they asked for it, even it's not allowed to do so under your labour law (?).

I forgot to mention this but I asked the manager before I handed in the application whether or not I needed to include my SSN and he said that it was my choice but at the time I had already written down the SSN with ink and didn't feel like scratching it out in front of the manager or buying white out or something so I just said "meh" and handed it in...I'm so stupid i know..

They can open up 3 credit card accounts with it and since it's under your name, any charges made will be directed to you. They're gonna call you saying you have pay up 30k or however much he stole.

I know of people who this has happened to before, so they had a block put on their credit. They are contacted to authorize any new credit offerings before it is approved. Not a terrible thing tbh.

I don't really know the specifics as to what happened to my parents, I just know they had a really good credit before this happened but since they couldn't pay the 30k, their credit went from being really high to now in the middle becuz of it. They told me they had to call the fraud department or something.

But after reading what u said, if I'm contacted before it happens then there won't be any problems..but I don't know why this happened to my parents if they contact you before it's approved. They won't go through with approving it until you approve it first right? Like say u didn't pick up the phone or something they won't just approve it for u..ill have to ask my parents later if they approved of the new credit but I seriously doubt they did.

Your parents probably didn't have a fraud alert, as most people don't.

Hm that looks pretty good..I'll look at it more carefully later and inform my parents of it. Thanks alot!

What? Almost every application (entry level jobs, obviously) i've seen asks for your SSN or part of it.

Having worked for a company that processes those job application on behalf of the clients looking to hire, you should be fine in providing your SSN. The reason they ask for it is simple, it's a great identifier as is used on criminal, driving, credit, and other background searches of your history. Hopefully you read or recall exactly what kind of searches the company looking to hire you will run.

Be aware that it is not legal to check on someone's citizenship status by running an SSN check, even though that is also why many companies ask for the number. For that, an I-9 form is required with additional signatures by the applicant as it is a separate process.

Might be different in America. I've never seen a single job application in my life that asks for it initially. They've always asked for it once you've been granted the job.

This. Every place I have applied for recently every one of them wanted it on the application.
