Part IX - Links Awakening

Alright so I finished Link to the past and jumping into a game I am relatively un-familiar with, Links Awakening for the game boy. I remember a friend of mine owning the game and me trying it, but the only thing I remember about it was the Bow-wow chomp, and the feather. The premise of this game is apparently you're stuck on an island and have to kill 8 nightmares to get magical musical instruments to wake up a giant egg, so you can fly off the island. That is some fucked up shit nintendo, lay off the shrooms.

Wtf Nintendo?

Anyways jumping into the game. I notice that this game introduces the owl that was in Orcarina of Time and hes always conviently at road blocks to tell you to do shit. So first I go down to the beach grab my sword, start exploring, feeling out the game. The controls feel tight, though I'm disappointed I don't have sword power @ full health. Music is okay until I reach the forest, where it turns into some sort of intense non-zelda sounding music. The game looks pretty with colors although some things are hard to tell what they are, and the shop keeper looks hilarious. The ability to change your sword to B or A and any item for that matter is pretty damn cool and useful too.

Why doesn't the shop keeper save the world if hes so powerful, Legend of Shopkeeper.

Go up through the woods, explore. Some weird racoon tells me to sprinkle powder on him or he will lie to me. The rest of the woods just leads to dead ends and I need to find a key to enter the first dungeon. So I go back to town to play the crane game. The key idea to get into palaces I found pretty cool and unique and adds more to the gameplay. The map in this game is also nice as it doesn't show you everything and updates as you explore.

So I'm pretty poor cause it's the start of the game then I have to play this crane game at 10 rupees a pop. First I grab the Yoshi doll to give to that girl, which then gives me I bow, which I give to bow wow. Then I get some dogfood and get some bannanas from the guy in the hut on the beach. Great a trading sequence QQ. Finally after getting super pissed and have to keep chopping down the hedges for more rupees I get the fucking powder and get to the first dungeon.

First dungeon has a lot of similarities to link to the past. The guy starting at you is the same statues as it, and the boss is the same annoying ass worm as Boss 3 in LttP. None the less its a good starting dungeon, with the coolest item of all. The magic feather.. that makes you somehow gain the ability to jump. Hmm, seems legit. This game also brings back some platforming side scrolling similar to Links Adventure, but it actually does well here, I enjoy having these parts in the game.

Additionally, this game intoduces Mini bosses that give you a check point to the mid dungeon. These are really awesome, cause everyone knows boss battles are some of the funnest parts. Beat first boss, get some sort of instrument, get out.

Oh hai, goomba, what up?

Next dungeon to get in you have to find the missing bow wow, by fighting some dudes in a cave. The game's flow so far feels really nice and has stuff to do between dungeons that isn't filler. Plus I get to walk a bow wow that eats everything. Fucking badass. So I go to the swamp and eat the plants blocking the dungeon and go in.

The most fucking annoying part about this game is everytime you touch a bottle without the gloves it says HEY YOU NEED GLOVES TO PICK IT UP DERP. Half the time you just do it by fucking mistake. I hate it, its really a pain in the ass. Then after you get the gloves you need to equip them which is equally annoying. So guess what the 2nd dungeon follows the same as the first. Has a bunch of puzzles, a mini boss, boss and an item. So I get the gloves make my way to the boss.

This guy is a giant ghost clown asshole that always laughs at you. Its annoying cause he basically TELLS you what to do, and if you don't do it he tells you again and again. You pick up his dumb bottle and smash it against the wall. Avoid his flames and stab out his eyes for a magical bell. Man this Link guy is serious about these instruments.

NYEAH NYEAH YOUR DEAD

Now that I got the gloves and feather alot of the map opens up to me. I explore find some heart peices, rupees, the location of the huge egg. Find the next dungeon, but the bitch won't give me the key until I get her some leaves. So wait wait wait. This game is a giant drug trip, in which you are the drug mule. First you give a racoon some cocaine and he turns back into a person, now your getting some bitch some weed so she'll give you a key.

This part had me stuck for a while, I go to the castle find one leaf, but the others were pretty tricky. Until I realize throwing a bottle at a door opens it in this game, unlike any other Zelda. Lol. Nice consistency Nintendo. I beat some whack a mole boss. Then get a crow out of a tree and kill him for his leaf. Bring back the leaves and dig up the key with my 200$ shovel. Shit thats expensive shovel.

Next dungeon is called the key dungeon. Its pretty sweet cause basically every door has a lock, so its filled with puzzles getting keys. Some are so obvious, but some are hard. Luckily each dungeon has an owl that if you stick a dildo in his nose, you get some hints. Which definitely help with the key hunt. In this dungeon you get the PEGASUS BOOTS. I love this item, and mixed with the feather you can long jump. Its awesome. The mini boss is lame, you just make him eat bombs. In this game bombs aren't dropped you haev to buy them -_- QQ. Then you fight the boss which is a real treat. Instead of explaining I'll just drop a video.

Puzzling elements within a boss fight, using multiple items for multiple stages makes for a good boss fight.

Overall I'm enjoying the game so far but haven't played it a lot yet.

Overall Progress:
Legend of Zelda (Completed) - 10 Hours
Zelda 2: Adventure of Link (Completed) - 16.5 Hours
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - 8.75 Hours (Completed)

Links Awakening - 3.75 Hours (3 dungeons)

Coming up Next
More links awakening.

Lemme know your childhood or recent experiences with this game, I know its a cult favorite and I would like to hear about it.

Oh FUCK YES, was waiting for you to get to this. Definitely my first Link game, remember getting this from a Sunday Flea Market with a whole bunch of other randoms. Was soooo frustrating and soooo fun as a kid <3

Links Awakening is easily one of my top 3 Zelda games, but mainly due to me spending such a large time with it as a child :D of course I feel it is a very magical game for a kid, so that helped too! I hope you have a blast, I've slowly been playing through all the Zelda games myself, kinda tough with uni happening >< but come summer, I shall pwn them all~

Link's Awakening taught me the value of a dollar. It was THE game that made me decide I had to have a game boy. And my parents made me work for that shit, so I saved up all my money doing chores and whatnot for months. One day my dad while filling up at a gas station my dad gave me like two bucks and said I could go inside and buy some candy and I said, "No, that's alright. I'd rather save it for my gameboy." and he was so proud of me he gave me an extra two bucks. True story.

Link's Awakening was my first Zelda game. I still say "Double, double, toil and trouble. A toadstool mix makes powder for tricks!" out of the blue for no reason.

Gogo find those secret seashells!

that makes my heart ache!! the younger people havent even played the legendary 2d zelda games... holy cow........ have you also missed out on secret of mana, etc? all the godlike SNES rpgs? super metroid? oh god..................... dont wanna live no more D:::::

edit: let me tell you, the rpgs are really so timeless. you have to play them all. final fantasy 6, secret of mana, secret of evermore, zelda, chronotrigger, terranigma, illusion of time(european name)/illusion of gaia(us).........

do you think the concept of a 2d cartoon is timeless? yes? the same thing holds true for 2d RPGs. trust me.

Whoa I was wondering which one had the giant egg on the cover. I played this one and loved it. I was extremely bored one time and borrowed it from a friend. Such an experience!

have you also played super metroid? :o ... it's not an RPG, but arguably one of the best SNES games ever. can't imagine playing it on PC though. it's not as timeless as the RPGs, i think... just like i'd never seriously play mario64 now.

This game is my favourite game of all time. I remember when i was younger i had a copy for my gameboy (the blocky black and white one, best ever), and the game went through the wash and stopped working. I begged my parents to bring me to get another one. I had already beaten the game, but man that game was amazing.

This game and OOT so good

p.s. The storm music at the intro of this game is my alarm clock in the morning

btw, on the other hand... i missed out on OoT and everything that followed. haha.

i tried playing it with an emulator but the shitty graphics and sounds ruined it for me. didnt feel as timeless as the 2D games.

maybe i should give it a more serious try again!

I had the original version of this game as a kid. That second boss had me stuck for years; I don't know what he says in the DX version, but in the original, he just says "Nyaah Nyaah Nyaah, as long as I have my bottle, you can't hurt me!", and I had no idea that I could pick him up without getting hurt until I read the solution in a strategy guide after being stuck there for six years.

My friend also had this back in the day (the non-color one). Was pretty fun, I never actually finished it. It has this sort of dreamy-trippy feel to it( b/c spoilers, its a fucking dream), but it is similar to LttP which is good.
Out there, the Kid learned to fend for himself. Learned to build. Learned to break.

This was my very first Zelda game. Amazing and tons of fun. I think I was stuck on dungeon 6 for the better part of a year.
Have fun!!

I disagree; Link's Awakening is good, but not as good as the original or LttP, and the other portable Zelda I played, Minish Cap, started well, but then you get to that stupid sky area and the whole game starts sucking (although I was really glad to hear them re-use the dungeon theme from the original game in Minish Cap's "dead woods" area; I always loved that song, it's sooooo moody and haunting, and is one of my favorite songs in the series).

This is my favourite zelda of them all. When I was a kid I had this on my Gameboy, cart broke bought it again, then it came out in colour DX version OMG and I got it again. I have these carts and also bought it for my 3ds.

I have beaten it easily 20 times at least. In one road trip i beat it 2 times on the way to and from niagara falls as a kid. I can still beat it in an afternoon if I don't do any trade sequences.

Spectacular game.

Can you tell I love this game?

I'm 19, but I didn't own any gaming system until I was 7 or 8, and even then I didn't own a console until I was like 12.

I haven't played super metroid, but if it's even half as good as Metroid: Zero Mission it should be a quality game
