After my Zerg Logo Chainmail Inlay Shenanigans, my (and your!) Australian Liquipediac buddy Zodasoda took an interest to this of most manly of hobbies. I'm still trying to get him to go try some stuff out himself (maybe he could use some encouragement guys!) but in the meantime he helped me out a bunch by coming up with a design for the project presented here: the Day[9] logo in chainmail!
Without further a due, let's jump into some pictures first
A quick run-down of the attributes:
- All rings made of 1mm galvy and brass wire (silver and yellow colours respectively)
- All rings a 3.5mm diameter
- Woven in a European 4-in-1 pattern
- Total of 2006 rings
It's actually the smallest rings I've ever made an inlay with (3.5mm is pretty small lol) but it enbabled me to use a smaller aspect ratio than for the 6mm-ring inlays I usually do which makes the whole thing look really nice. Couldn't get a better overview picture I'm afraid, so you'll have to take my word for it ^^;
Now we get to the whole point of the blog... Sean, if you read this: I'd love to send this over to the Day9 Headquarters. You've contributed a shitton to the community and we don't get to say thank you nearly enough. If you'd like to, we (Zoda and me both) would be happy to add this little something to your already magnificently adorned wall. Thing is, we don't have your address. I've looked and asked around, but to no avail. If you read this blog and would accept this, feel free to drop me a PM! (alternatively, if you think it looks butt-ugly feel free to completely ignore this lol)
To everyone else, enjoy the pics I guess and don't forget to share the link

Wow. How long did this take to make? I can imagine I'd be struggling for a long time and there would be no BW for quite a while because of the damaged palms, but you've got some practice already. Any idea how many hours it took? Amazing job!

Yaaaaay :D I'll send it to the address on the site then? And don't worry, I'll make sure you can hang it without having to seriously damage your walls.

edit: 5/5 because fuck yeah chainmail I found that earlier but not sure if it was his homeaddress or the companyaddress. They're prooobably the same but wasn't sure since I doubted he'd actually publish his home address like that On February 27 2012 06:28 Stratos wrote: Wow. How long did this take to make? Amazing job! I'm not sure. When I'm working with a ringsize I'm used to I can do something like 300 rings per hour. These were a good bit on the small side though, plus I couldn't blindly weave cause of having to put the pattern in so it took me a bit longer I guess. All in all maybe 10-12 hours? On February 27 2012 07:44 Erzz wrote: How expensive are these to make? 5/5, awesome as always Not at all. Getting started requires some investments like buying a mandrel, wire cutters and some pliers but materials after that can be pretty cheap (the total "cost" for this project has been under 10$, the real investment is the time you put into it)

More excellent work from Pholon as expected

I bet this is just a plot to get his home address, then sell it on the black market to fangirls (and boys) for ludicrous amounts of money .

In all seriousness, it looks amazing!
|
5/5 FUCK YEAH when I have the money I'll buy your chainmails I have a question: who bought the Zerg logo chainmail and for how much? Is it possible that you make another one in a way it can be worn like a necklace?
|
Day9 is so lucky. that is sick.

I sent it to Mango who went crazymode and threw a thousand bucks at it lol. All for a good cause :D Necklaces with inlays are tricky. It can be done I guess but not in the way that they incorporate a full-blown logo. I reckon I could make a necktie out of this though :D On February 27 2012 21:00 UltimateHurl wrote:Looks amazing, love the chainmail stuff you've been doing. How did you get started on it? Would've love to see Day9 do his Skyrim play-through in chainmail! I saw a chainmail vest once from up close and told myself "heck, I can do that". And so I looked up some stuff, got started and never stopped. On February 29 2012 14:21 Dracolich70 wrote: Great work and a awesome gift. How long did it take to make(approx)? About 10-15 hours maybe? I don't really keep track of time since I usually do this while watching SC or a movie!

Holy crap this is epic! :O
I hope Day9 gets it soon, so we can see it on a daily! :D
