So I'll be making the arduous drive on Saturday morning, six or so hours, to get to where I shall be staying/studying...

I'm sort of nervous, I think I'll probably panic for the first few days, then settle down.

Just curious, what are the best non-perishable foods? I shall be stocking up on them before I leave home.
Anything else I should bring that no one mentions?

are you saying that you're a freshman? If so, damn didn't know you were that young. If not...disregard this.'

Also stereotypical as fuck but I love having ramen. Other than that you'll (probably?) be on a mealplan so just snack foods.

Dried pasta is good, takes like 10 mins to cook and you can put most savoury things on it to make it taste semi-decent. Any tinned food like spaghetti will keep you going for a week or so at least until you get settled in and start cooking, which I would recommend you do cause you save so much money and it's also better for you than eating ready made stuff.

I did the same thing when I moved into dorms, I still have a tin of tomato soup from Aldi which is now 4 years old. Don't buy too much soup.

a great basis for every food would be Couscous it is pretty much unperishable and you just put some boiling water over it and 5min later the stuff is good to eat. It fills you up fast and you can eat it with pretty much anything.

Make sure you bring nail clippers! And other little stuff like that, but nail clippers were actually the tiny thing I missed the most in first year residence =P other than that, EXTRA EXTRA CLOTHING of every type, you WILL lose it and most importantly socks 'cause they're a major pain in the ass.

As far as food goes it all depends whether you get a meal plan or not. If you get a meal plan just bring a bunch of cereal and stuff, things you'll be able to make in your room and stuff. If you get a kitchen or something like that even you're lucky, I had a microwave for my entire floor so don't rely on the ability to cook anything.

If you have a kitchen buy SHITLOADS of perogies and pasta and stuff like that, boil it for ten minutes and you're gooooood to go. Don't try to get fancy at all unless it's something you're really into and you're willing to put in extra effort because cooking is hard.

Good luck =) res is super sweet, make sure you actually study though. It's hard sometimes.

I second couscous, it's absolutely great to have about to just eat when you can't be bothered.

Also, I strongly recommend you get some seasonings you like. Obvious choices are salt and pepper, but there are lots in shops that're really tasty and will add a lot of flavour to anything really easily, and they last a long time too.

For example, I like to fry eggs in vegetable oil (protip: put some garlic cloves in some oil and use that on occasion if you like garlic) and sprinkle it with pepper and steakhouse pepper. Tastes fucking amazing when you fry it just right and get the peppery flavours to infuse into the yolk just right.

I've been a freshman student at Emory this year and here's what I learned from first semester:

shin ramen,
ohtugi rice,
kimchi in a bag (I'm serious, there's portable bags of this stuff that you can put into a refrigerator)
snacks (a lotttt seriously, you eat bags of this stuff when you study into late night)
coffee mix (buy them and bring them, buying coffee from outside way too costly)
a lot of quarters and one dollar bills (not for the strippers, but for the laundry)
curry/stuff like that

That's what I brought this semester after last semester and it's helping out a lot. Hope this helps :D
Need to write more things...

Although this is only loosely related to your situation, my only "true for everyone" advice I can give about University life is this:

DO EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF LAUNDRY A WEEK BEFORE EXAMS

Everything. Socks, underwear, sheets, towels, shirts, pants, ect. ect. You won't regret it.

Otherwise, enjoy the experience

Do you have access to a kitchen? Like can you cook and stuff?

If so dried beans. Pinto beans are the least finicky to cook and chick peas/garbanzos are extremely versatile. Frozen fruit is good. Yogurt can last like a month.

I don't know how stuff works in Australia, just cultural differences, but bring smokes and nice booze, leave your door open, just when your reading or starcraft or what ever, just make your self seem approachable! These will allow you to make friends quickly, and friends you make in dorms will usually last you for a long time. Good luck!

Prepare for a rough couple of weeks. Adjusting to that much new stuff is a pain. Plus, everything that can go wrong will go wrong! I remember on my very first night in the dorms, the fire alarm went off at 4:45 AM. I lived on the 13th floor, and elevators don't work during a fire alarm. Fun!

My freshman year I was too lazy to get up and eat breakfast, so I would eat a granola bar on the way to class. Granola bars, pop tarts, and ramen are all good suggestions already mentioned. Peanut butter and crackers/bread might be good too. I'd also recommend you get one of those nalgene hard plastic water bottles, or just disposable one that you reuse. Never know when you're gonna be thirsty in class or walking around.

Oh, and Vegemite.

Why not sydney uni or unsw? From what i've seen in the uni thread, it's not worth moving to canberra, even if it is ranked no.1.

Tea. At least camomile and some other herbal stuff in case you catch a cold or some stomach thing.

Painkillers. The one thing you'd forget about unless it's sunday and you have the worst headache of your life.

Be Asian.

50KG of rice

Go to Costco and buy pasta/spaghetti.

Get some cheap olive oil.

Beans/Spices/Salt/the basic stuff...

Thing all you have to do is do a weekly meat/vege shopping.

Don't eat too much ramen, unhealthy and when you do need it you can always burrow from your room mate :D

DRINKS. LOTS OF DRINKS.
Other things (no particular order):
1. TV dinners (if you can have a fridge)
2. potstickers (omfg <3, also if u have a fridge/freezer)
2. snack foods, chips, salsa, funions, etc...

If you have a fridge/freezer/stovetop, I recommend making a fresh curry once a week to last the rest of the week. It freezes well amd can be adjusted to any budget. You can just reheat some and cook some rice every evening.

Most of the world is lactose intolerant to some extent, except for people of white European ancestry.

Rice
Canned tuna/salmon
Onions
Whatever spices you like

As long as you have those things you can basically buy anything and mix it in and it won't taste too bad.

Get your parents to send you boxes of beef jerky. Best ways to make friends (other than beer).

wut... my whole dorm at boarding school can drink milk except 1 girl. we have 40 koreans...
never heard about that before

I was sickly for much of middle school... until I figure out it was the chocolate milk. After I switched to orange juice for lunch, my tummy issues suddenly stopped.

Lactose tolerance can be trained, but you gotta be drinking for a long time to get there. For some people like me, it's impossible to indulge in dairies.

Yeah, here in Taiwan everyone drinks milk (mostly with tea haha). Don't see anyone complaining about lactose intolerance...

Many people who are lactose intolerant can drink milk but it just results in varying degrees of discomfort. Being able to drink milk without severe consequences doesn't necessarily mean you or someone else isn't lactose intolerant by definition of the condition.

Do you frequently see people drinking medium or large glasses of milk? If its a small amount added to tea or coffee its pretty likely that isn't really enough cause most people much (or any) discomfort.

no idea if this applies to your dorm/your uni, but these were some of my experiences observations.

bring shower sandals to dorm. communal showers are just......depressing.
Your favorite alcohol if dorm permits/if your balls are large (if not) Always enjoy a nice glass of whiskey (i.e. w.e tickles your fancy).

sigh just reread OP and saw you specifically talk about things to bring, not dorm life in general so you can disregard below, though it might be worth it to glance over.

Go out and meet as many people as humanly possible while in the dorms. makes socializing later years much easier.
try any club that you have the slightest inclination for. you can always stop, but getting involved with a good and interesting club is a great way to help you stay motivated and entertained during school.
not sure on age/drinking laws/moral compass but I would go party as much as possible while/if classes are easy. For most people they just get harder meaning less time to responsibly go out and get smashed.
don't date or hookup with anyone on your floor. It will just be awkward if it ends poorly for the rest of the year.

All men are by nature equal, made all of the same earth by one Workman; and however we deceive ourselves, as dear unto God is the poor peasant as the mighty prince. -Plato

Yeah pretty much 100% standard (at least in the US).

Standard for undergrads in the US but it depends on the college/university for postgraduates.

I'm lactose-intolerant (doubly so in the mornings), but I still drink milk tea from time to time, and it doesn't make me feel particularly sick until I finish a cup in a short period of time. My mom's way more lactose intolerant on the other hand; she can't drink even a quarter of a cup of milk tea and has to limit dairy intake.

Eh, idk. I really like studying while doing laundry. Something about it is so calming. Maybe it's having a tangible result you can check every hour or so unlike studying -.-;;

You like all the clunking and clanking of the laundry machines? hahaha.... and there's usually people at the laundry too... studying.
definitely bring like cup ramen, microwave rice if no rice cooker, popcorn, etc lol and oh shit... bring utensils lol, plastic or metal doesn't matter.. and chopsticks! since you're asian.

oh and make sure you get along with your roomy...

personally... I rarely talk to my roommate.. and its.. kinda weird... not really friends... just lack of interest? or no similarities I guess...
