I have a book cover I need to design, so far this is my first rough draft, I have never designed one ever in my life. I saw some other book cover designs and try to feel a flow to it on how they did it. The wording is all by the author himself, as he wants them there and as the title says, I need some criticism, what do you guys think? What should I add or remove, or move around? Do you feel like this will catch your attention? Anything really helps

EDIT - Changed it a bit more, hopefully it's better; also made the watermark smaller so you're able to see the cover better.

I think the actual physical design on the cover is okay, but when I first read the title I wasn't sure whether the author was a kid or an adult, as silly as that may sound.

Also, I think there are some grammatical errors like "The teen who refianced HIS mom's mortgage..."

Ahhh, thanks for noticing that, thank goodness this only the rough draft.

Overall, it's a pretty nice design. Your choice of fonts are good. The colour scheme for the upper portion is nice.

The black text looks a bit out of place though. On top of the yellow area, try a very dark yellow rather than a pure black. For the text at the top try a really dark purple, or the same purple as the rest of the text at the top.

For the photo, I'm not a fan of outer glow there, it's too pronounced. Maybe soften it by greatly increasing its size, darkening it and lowering its spread.

The photo itself could use some adjustments. Maybe play with the color curves to adjust the light/dark balance/

These are small things that are honestly just personal preferences of mine.

Well, I am not sure what is within your power, but at least from this pic, the large title goes a bit too close to the edges, looks cramped. I am also not crazy about the font, looks too generic, too much like a flier for a "get rich quick" scheme. I think the layout is overall fine, not crazy about the mix of italics, then large standard, then italics, then small standard, then italics, but that is just me. Almost too crowded.

Overall, while it looks fine if I saw this on a rack at a bookstore or while flipping pages on Amazon, I would not stop to give it another look because it looks like what it is and I would never get this book. There is really nothing wrong with your design, just the content as a whole.

Also, yeah, there are a couple grammatical errors you might want to check on.

Keep it up though! It seems like a good try for your first book cover.

It looks like a magazine ad. That said, a lot of self-help books look like magazine ads. Obviously since the wording is what the author wants, give him what he wants. That looks like it's what the author wants, but it's not a cover that would interest me. Personally anything like that having "SHOCKING" written on it is an immediate turn off.

On the other hand, the graphic design (the part which you had the most influence over) looks fine. Page composition, color theme, gradients, etc. is fine. Only criticism is I cant read the word over the image. Oh wait it doesn't actually say "SHOCKING" does it. it's like "SHOCKEYY?" I can't tell. Is that the name of the author?

You should ask your printer what specs they require because I am sure they will want bleed and have a specified safe area for type.

For example these are the specs for a full page ad in Harper's Bazaar
FPC: Bleed - 307 x 225mm, Trim - 297 x 215mm, Type - 277 x 195mm

In this case you shouldn't place text outside of the Type area (so all type should be within a 10mm margin).

As for the design it looks ok to me (the kind of job I would try to get done asap and then move on).

Yea, they haven't told me bleed specs yet. I should of asked before hand.

It looks very nice. Font is good. Color Scheme is good. I do have to say though, the guy at the bottom looks like he is trying to strangle that poor woman. It's just a bit creepy. Still a nice cover.

I think those 4 sentences needs to be in point-form (say with checkmarks) or something. It was awfully difficult to parse.

While I agree with most of what you said. Dark yellow on top of yellow isn't a very good idea based on the color alone. It needs a little more contrast as it blends in.

I don't know why there isn't any green considering he's talking about finance and credit.

Yea, I had the checkmarks, but they look so tacky, every book has had them. I'm trying to come up with a different idea.

If you notice, the color scheme goes well with their clothing, I thought about putting green, but it would be so off, I can do maybe green marks to lay out what the book is going to help, but if you really think about it, Gold usually stands for money while purple stands for power.

True, I was trying to figure out a way around the yellow on yellow idea.

Coming from a layman in no way attatched to any kind of art or design schooling, I find your design aesthetically pleasing, but easilly forgettable. It's just "one of those books" in the self-help department of the book shop or library. This, of course, means you've captured the general theme of book covers in its category just fine, really, but it's also entirely average in its presentation.

The image is incredibly goofy. I'd remove it alltogether and instead have a half-page water-marked page of numbers on the entire yellow segment of the cover, with the numbers pale gray. The number page would be more solid on the rightmost side, while mostly transparent on the left side, under the text.

Question: What does the photo have to do with the actual topic?
