It has been about a month since my last blog entry, but that's with very good reason. I have been extremely busy since then, what with massive projects to finish, exams, and the Christmas season all in a row. Immediately after Christmas my family and I checked out to Quebec for a few days, and we then returned home for New Years, where I father and I got brutally sick from food poisoning.
After returning to school (this has nothing to do with any New Year's resolution - I'm not a fan of promises you don't keep), I decided I would finally add some good and proper structure to my life. The previous term at school was too hectic, but this FINAL term should be well under my control. I am obsessed with the achievement of perfection or anything close to it, and I want my life to be a living example of those pursuits. Updating the blog format and timing is actually a part of that; every week you can expect a new blog entry with 3 main topics (with pictures), a link to a song, and an introductory quote. The title will usually have something to do with the third topic.
1. Mont Tremblant
So I said my family checked out to Quebec for a few days? Yeah, we went to Mont Tremblant for the best skiing I've ever experienced so far. It was bitterly cold there: -30 C (-22 F) at the base and even less at the summit with the wind chill. On my last runs of the day I was always worried my fingertips would break off once I removed my gloves.
We stayed in Montreal (Saint-Laurent) by the airport where it was just as cold. The hardest part of the whole trip though was the driving; Quebec has a very "American" highway system and it is brutally confusing. The highway (520) is level with the ground and there are no overpasses! Instead there are these sneaky underpasses that you can't see mixed in with a bunch of one-way streets. Just getting across the highway is a nightmare. Our On-Star was useless; if it weren't for me using Goolge Maps on my phone we would have been far worse off.
But that said the skiing was amazing; I had one of those "my life is amazing" moments on my first run of the sencond day (picture very related - it's the run and the view that made me think that). Whoever I marry, she better love skiing, because it's my favorite activity in the world.
2. Video Games
So I've discovered (as many have before me) the best game ever created: Minecraft. I purchased it about a month after it came out and very quickly fell in love. My friend complains that, "it looks like N64" but in all honesty it is such a deep game with limitless possibilities. I poured a few days into a Survival Mode world but in the last week I started a Hardcore character. The game has given me moments of epic calm and sheer fright; you would not believe the irrational fear of the dark that you have in this game (although in the game's case it's perfectly rational).
I have many possible screenshots but in hardcore mode I just came out of my mine (under my villa there is a virtually infinite network of caverns) to discover it was SNOWING in my taiga villa! I also got lost in the Nether yesterday (Hell) and with some careful hand calculations and the fact that I went in with a full inventory I was able to find my Nether base and get myself out. Dying in Minecraft is a great loss, especially in Hardcore mode.
I also got Battlefield 3 for Christmas! It's a lot of fun although I'm finding certain skills quite difficult to learn (like being a good Recon or pilot). Send me a PM if you want to add me and we can play sometime. Looks good on my new computer. I'll bet Skyrim will look even better; I'm getting it tomorrow.
3. The Rise of the House of Giz
Let me tell you why 2012 is going to be an amazing year. For starters both my younger brother and I are graduating this June. He'll be getting his degree from Schulich Business School (at York) and I will finally graduate from Mechanical Engineering at the University of Waterloo. We're both going to be starting jobs (still looking) hopefully in Downtown Toronto, and we're both going to be living together (and maybe my buddy Waterwings can join us). I am going to have very little school debt because I've mostly paid my own way through school, and I have no other burdens to worry about.
My father also just paid off all his credit card debt (amazing picture related) and his business is doing well. My other brother is also completely raping high school - he's really the most amazing of all - but I could go on...
My ultimate goal is to be like Jim Caviezel in the Count of Monte Christo. After disappearing and making his fortune, he comes back to this party in France and everyone is immediately enthralled as soon as he shows up - he's this good-looking man of mystery and wealth and influence. I want to be that guy; that's why I work at school, and that's why I've worked out 4 times in the last week and will continue to do so. Life is a mountain, and you only have to keep going - keep climbing - to get higher and higher. If you sit on your laurels you won't get anywhere.
"Happiness comes in many forms."
Please look forward to my next blog, as they will all follow this format from now on. My song for this week is just a happy semi-electronic piece. Every time I listen to it I imagine myself working at something followed by a long string of all the positive results.
May you also enjoy all the best in 2012.
