R.I.P. Eleven year old Sony MDR-CD280...

You gave me so much all these years, never letting me down a single time despite all the falls to the ground. But I knew that this day would come eventually
I had these headphones for more that a third of my life O.O and they were amazing.

NEVER FORGET!

Now I just bought the Sennheiser HD518. After what I read here in the Headphone Enthusiast Thread and in HeadRoom I think I did a good buy. Afterall my main usage is for listing and writting music.

After unpacking it you can see that the headphones are robust and solid. You can immediately see that you are in the presence of a equipement that will last a very good time if treated right.

My first complaint is about my current setup. I'm working at the moment with a notebook that has two 15mm jack sound output on the front . The HD518 come with the 35mm jack by default and an 15mm adapter for smaller jacks. So in total I have about 70 to 80 mm of plug+adapter sticking out of the front my notebook. It really is messing with my writing since I have to raise my right wrist and arm higher that before. Seems like I'll have to get another adapter or something. I'll figure something.

They are confortable but are a little tighter than my old Sony headphones (maybe they were already a little soft from the age). Nothing to be worried about.

Just plugged them in and pumped Daft Punk - Alive and let me say HOLY SH!T !!! Seems like a completely diferent album!! O.O
The sound is so rich and immersive. The perception of all frequencies is fenomenal, from bass, mid to treble. Alive is a live album record with a huge audience and despite the clarity of the music itself you can perceive all the noise from the crowd (the cheering, chanting, etc...). And the music never looses to that background noise. In a way it even sound better because if you close your eyes you can easily imagine yourself within the crowd listen to Daft Punk.

Very crisp sound indeed and the volume is very good too. Usually I use more volume during the day (since there are more background noises) but at the moment I'm using my 'night volume' settings and the sound is high (or maybe a little too high) enough for listening confortably without the problem of a passing car or motorcycle interrupt your music.

I'm not a critic whatsoever but my first impressions are very good. If I feel like I might give a review of diferent music styles (classical, jazz+big band, latin...)

I have heard a lot of good about the HD518's so yeah, i do think that you made a good purchase. Congrats on the new headphones!
(And I would also be very interested in reading some reviews on how they handle different genres of music.)

You ought to look into some of the AKG headphones too, if you are into jazz/big band/classical/rock etc. I currently have AKG K-271 mkII headphones, and they are absolutely amazing. Maybe they lack a bit of the bass for electronic music, but that is a trade I am willing to make for crisp, clear sound. No doubt that HD518's would serve you well too though.

(Oh lookie, both of these headphones appear to be of the same price range -- Now I am even more excited to read your Reviews OP!)

11 years for headphones is quite remarkable

When one invests into proper headphones to begin with, and handles them with care, they do last a long time. For example, my dad still has some 20y old Sennheiser ( I think.. need to check this) headphones, that are 100% functional.
