Are we paying several hundred dollars for even more convenience? Already areas, places and your current technology are capable of doing multiple things at once to reduce the need to lug heavy backpacks or use a fanny pack (though my father still sports one to show his age - similar to a trunk revealing how many rings it has). It seems instead of innovation, we are trying to shrink the need for less things because we don't want to carry as much. As long as it is simulated, we'll accept it with its additional convenience. 400-page book doesn't fit nicely in your messenger back? Let me animate this e-book so you can pretend-turn the page. The only convenience that conveys rational thought is pornography. Instead of going through hoops of socializing and pretend-interest in the male or female, you can simply uncover your square-like electric piece of technology, tap two words simulating, bluntly, the kind of male or female you'd like ("Big boobs, dicks" "likes pee") and voila, you can self-indulge on as much as you want. It seems everything about an iPad is smaller. You pay for the hardware and then pay for the various applications (some free) that you'd think you might need or don't, who cares, you only spent like 3.50 for two-three apps that look like potential fun, an amusement or gratification to ensure what you bought is worthwhile. Again: convenience, a mild toy or pleasantries to satisfy your travels. + Show Spoiler + I'm writing about everything and nothing. To be frank, assert what you'd think you need out of your ipad and then use it for that. If you don't think you need it for anything, well...

They are larger than smartphones and can do only a tiny bit more than them. They are smaller than laptops but do a lot less than them. I suppose they fill a very tight nitch in the technology world. You can use it to take notes on the go, the portability makes it easy to set tasks, watch videos etc. Most of the apps are mediocre, but my new Blackberry playbook definitely helps me with organization.

Find some friends or associates who are real prudes, simple put a couple of videos Japanese scat or puke pr0n on it, go up to one of them and ask them what their opinion is on this "controversial" Japanese short film. But be sure to keep a poker face and act as if its a genuine question. Lulz later.

It's good to read Wikipedia or newspaper, but that's it. And it's not as comfortable as a laptop, since you don't have a mouse so can't just middle click and open all the headlines at once as you would do otherwise. iPad browser is kinda bad.

I own an iPhone 4s and I am confident anything I want to do on an iPad is just as accessible to me on my iPhone with similar comfort levels. It would be nice to have a bigger screen to read in bed or watch videos with friends easier, yes. However I can't justify the expense for that, as I don't e-read other than newspaper articles that take all of 5 or 10 minutes of reading even on my iPhone screen. If given one, as the techie I am, I would enjoy it in my bed and watch a ton of SC2 on it while lurking the forums while at home. However at university when in my dorm I'll be glued to my desktop rig. On the go during the day it'll be nice to check in for twenty minutes of reading with lunch or something. It provides a big screen, fast hardware, and high resolution to a market who wants more than just a tool to read with that has bland res. I can see how it will do well should prices come down significantly (and I mean average person well not business well), as a lot of people enjoy the thought of browsing from anywhere and enjoying close-to-desktop performance with a large screen in a small piece of hardware. I agree with one of our above posters, though. It serves a niche market and little else due to pricepoint and how easy it is to replace it with other "essentials" such as decently modern smart phones or laptops.

play ipad games (some of these are genuinely very good) it's just overall more convenient than a laptop and more practical than a smartphone when you want to have the web on the go or in bed i love looking up random things in the morning (e.g. e-mail, news, weather, etc.) on an ipad without getting up

TwitchTV I also use it at work. Wyse PocketCloud lets me remotely access any computer I install the desktop companion on, so I can do things from the office desktop while i'm helping a client with their computer, super useful. Can also access home computer from any wifi network. If you have any friends that use an iPhone you can text them from it. This and taking notes is surprisingly easy if you get one of the cases that props it up.

Oh God reading those comments made me die a little inside. On topic, though, I'd use a tablet for: -taking notes via handwriting -reading books while commuting via bus -e-mail/social networks -quick on-the-fly sketches/compositions -entertainment on long plane rides Basically, it's about having some portable functionality. I don't want to carry around my textbooks, notebooks, laptop, etc. all the time, so I'd have a tablet for on-the-go, laptop for LAN parties and hotels, and desktop when I get back home. That being said, I haven't found any tablet that fulfills all of these requirements well enough for me to consider getting. Waiting on a Mirasol/touch/pen-enabled tablet :-P

a tablet is just for ease of use, don't expect it to bring some type of extra convenience in your life or anything. it's just a toy.

 2) Sip a hot latte with a buddy in a Starbucks while talking about Occupy Wall Street and social injustices with the iPad just casually lying on the table with its cover mysteriously half-open and impress girls with your sophisticated image 3) Take notes from lectures on it and impress girls with it 4) Go to Mok Dong Studios and use the text scrolling app and impress girls/Tastosis with it I only have an old iPhone and since switched to Android because I like to experience different things with what limited upgrade opportunities I get. But surf the App Store (with a loaded credit/debit card) and I'm sure you'll find many good uses for it. BTW Stanza is/was (before Amazon acquired and it and semi-abandoned it) my favourite app, read so many Public Domain classics on it.

I also use it for a lot of reading. The size of the ipad screen is PERFECT for comic books. It's not bad for pdfs either. They recently released iBooks2, which is good for textbooks. There's a ton of solid free ebooks out there. I also use it for stuff like finding directions (it has a great maps feature), browsing the web (get Terra, Safari blows), and stupid timewasting games like chess, reversi, etc.

Jailbreak+VLC is such a waste of time and disk space, because most movies start in HD. You're better off just getting a free file converter that compresses video files into ipad format.

Just pay $4 for GoodPlayer, you can just drag and drop ANY movie format into iTunes and it auto syncs, no more converting... If you do want a converter go for Format Factory.
