So it's 2AM here and I was feeling pretty hungry. Since only a few places open this late at night, I decided to eat at Subway, which was open 24 hours. So I took a nice windy walk to restaurant and entered. There was already a line of people, waiting to order their subs. I quickly headed to the back and waited until the bread guy was ready to take my order. I got my usual sub for a quick meal, 6 inch Meatball Marinara on Jalapeno Cheese bread, with Mozzarella cheese, spinach, pickles, and jalapenos. Then there was this pretty big guy at the front of the line, in front of the register, eating his sub while the cashier asked him to pay for his money. He reminded me of Ben Roethlisberger actually. But he just stood there and kept on eating his sub without saying a word. So as the people in line looked impatiently at him, I couldn't help but smile a little at the audacity he had. Standing there not caring or just choosing to ignore everyone. He picked up his sandwich and continued to eat ever so slowly in large bites. So the cashier had no choice to skip him for now and ring up the other customers. As I paid for my sandwich, he tapped me on the arm and looked at me. I just gave him a quick smile and a nod and quickly looked away. Then finally, he finished his sub, and admitted that he had no money on him. I was taken back a bit. Unfortunately for him, there HAPPENED to be a police officer in line behind me. So I took my sub and sat down somewhere where I could see what was going on. So the police officer questioned the man. I couldn't hear very well, as the seats were a bit away from the register. I sat down and looked intently at the situation, thinking to myself, maybe I should just pay for his sub. However, I quietly watched the scene unfold, kind of curious to see what would happen. The police man seemed to get a bit irritated. I guess the man wasn't talking much. After a while, he finally handcuffed him took him out to the police car. Well at this point, I'm feeling a bit shocked at what happened and kind of lost my appetite. Well, I paid for it, so I quickly finished the food and walked out. There I saw the man enter a police van in his handcuffs surrounded by other police officers. I walked off as they drove off.

I guess what I'm trying to get at is should I have paid for the his sandwich? Would the police officer let it slide by, if I had paid for it? I mean, to be honest, we have no idea what his circumstances are, and he must have been really really hungry to go to Subway, order a sub, eat it in front of the cash register, and declare that he had no money. I guess I'm feeling a bit regretful that I did not do anything, and at the same time, a bit troubled on what would happen to him. Another question I would like to ask is are all police officers like that? I mean I understand that it is a crime, but the way he handled the situation made it seem so heartless. But then again, he is suppose to enforce the law, and I guess you need a certain amount of force and authority to do it. I can't imagine myself being able to do anything like that though. So what expected to be uneventful nighttime snack turned into something much greater and more thought provoking. Thank you for reading, and feel free to share your opinions.

Um I don't care what problem the guy is having going into a subway and eating it in front of the cashier then not paying is just stupid. I do not think you should have paid for it, there are other ways to get food then to do what he did. Hell he can go look for 50 cents and buy some top ramen if he was that hungry.

He deserved to be arrested for what he did imo, and if he was that hungry maybe he wants to go to jail so that he can get free food in there now rather then do what he did. I definitely wouldn't feel regretful if I were you, I would have actually been a little entertained to see something like that live

If you would have paid he would have done the same again. Besides he must have been an idiot to not see the policeman?

Come on, he tapped you and looked at you. He meant for you to pay, he wouldn't have eaten otherwise. You just scarred this guy for life and probably ruined his future job opportunities. Was it worth 5$? Huh? WAS IT?

I'm sure your description can't accurately recreate the experience of being there, but he sounded like a pompous ass to me. Making everyone wait for him, starring people down... honestly, I'd have more respect for someone who just took it and ran. No way in hell I would have paid for him.

haha I didn't know he didn't have money

But yeah I could see that if I did pay for him, perhaps he would do this again

And the Policeman came in later actually haha
Kind of unlucky for him lol

edit: well I don't really know about him being pompous, but it was a pretty sad sight
I probably couldn't translate it into words very well :/

"Pretty big guy" just standing in front of the cashier and eating the sub? He was trying to intimidate the cashier... deserves to be arrested, in my opinion.

Edit: But if I thought he wasn't trying to intimidate anyone, I would buy food for him. (I've bought food for panhandlers before.)

To me, it really depends on what my read of his character is. If he's a pompous ass and is just doing to cuz he thinks he CAN and is doing it for some ego reason and wants to make a scene, then no way would I pay. (well maybe I would if I thought that my buying it for him would make him think a bit, and would be something totally unexpected for him) If he's genuinely hungry, really doesnt have any money, and seems like a decent guy, of course I would pay. If its somewhere in between, well, it depends right?

Sorry I don't believe anybody should be able to be given free food (which they will then abuse like so many in our society) when most can actually work and get a job but don't want to.

For the rare amount of people who legitimately have problems and can't get a job either due to health issues or something to that affect I can stand letting them getting free food or stuff like that.

But a guy who orders a sub sandwitch, eats it in front of the cashier, doesn't pay and just says he has no money is just retarded and doesn't deserve sympathy.

Maybe the guy knew there's a police officer behind him? Poverty is a bitch, and sometimes people's circumstances are shitty enough that jail outweights sleeping on the street.

We will never know.

I believe if someone did this in Greece his mouth would get sliced open with a bread knife before he finished the sub and all that tomato, salami and lettuce would start falling out, smearing his chin with a mixture of blood, spit and ranch dressing. Our values may be dropping but definitely not as quick as Euro, thank you Greece.

Some crows are lazy crows, they don't actually do much when the other crows are working. Until recently, this has been a mystery of science-- why should some crows which work harder than others in a flock to provide food, build nests etc. support lazy crows which leech off of others, right? Biologically this shouldn't exist in a population. Flocks with lazy crows should have naturally selected themselves out of existence thousands of years ago. But they didn't, and the flocks do provide for lazy crows. People realized just recently that the lazy ones become hard working crows when another crow falls sick or becomes disabled, or their work is otherwise needed-- they fulfill a reserve labour role.

Sure, we aren't crows, but I figure, if fucking crows can take care of their own, why the hell shouldn't we? And to hell with notions about everyone having to pull their own weight according to some imaginary criteria. I think a civilization that provides for all is a better civilization and I think it leads to a broken paranoid and fragmented society otherwise. Some people would say that before he died my grandpa was useless, but man, he could tell a good story, he would play the harmonica, he would serve as a centrepiece for family gatherings, he had a ton of knowledge and he even drove the tractor around in the field sometimes too.

But dude, you might say, he's eating a subway sandwich and not paying! he's not driving the tractor, telling stories, or serving as a reserve crow labour force! So fuck him. No, he's not doing those things, but we are talking about him, and its interesting, and if everyone pulled their weight and acted exactly like you wanted them to, we wouldn't be having this interesting conversation, learning about crows and my grandpa and shit, and the world would be a hell of a lot more boring.

Guy was a jackass. Hell no you shouldn't have paid for him. As has been said, there are lots of alternatives if the guy was starving or something along those lines, but that stunt you just regaled us with seemed designed to either get free food by A) people doing nothing, or B) people paying for him. Serves him right.

Sorry but imho the guy is just a stupid asshole(or something that makes it good that he got arrested because he'll get help).

I know a guy that refuses to get a job, instead he constantly goes into shops and restaurants and ask "Do you guys have any leftover things I can eat?", sometimes he gets free stuff that looks a little bit moldy but he always says "Well I don't pay for it so eating moldy stuff is perfectly fine". He "lives" at the train station(although I believe he has a small flat somewhere, because in Germany you don't really have to be homeless) and never harrasses anyone or asks for money, he just checks the stores and kindly asks for free stuff, but never in an annoying way. And he always just gets the bad stuff nobody wants to eat anyway...

So OP, there's no reason to not do it this way, sounds like that "pretty big guy" was just a dumb asshole, drunk, or an addict (or insane). But in no way just a "poor man that wants some food". Never ever. If that really was the case, it's his own fault for acting like this. If you want free stuff, don't be a dick about it.

You don't steal a car, don't say anything if people ask you what the hell you are doing, then drive to your home and say "I have no car so I had to steal yours. Deal with it."...

EDIT:
I also want to stress out that even if the guy has mental issues it's best for him to get arrested, because he will get taken care of then(in a good way).

For some odd reason I can't make blogs, so let me ask this here - does it make sense to go to bed now if I have to wake up in 1 hour? Or should I just complete this all-nighter and go to college bragging?

Even if you paid for it the officer could still arrest and hold him for 24 hours. Sounds like he had some mental issues going on.

I think you shouldn't have payed for it. Also, the officer is completely fine in bringing him to the police station for not paying for the sandwich. He probably does something like this all the time to get some free food out of the generous people out there. What a dick. And as long as the officer didn't get physical over it, the guy deserves getting dragged away for stealing food.

dude, it wasn't even directed at Americans, he just said "our" as in everyone's, chill out and let him have an opinion, he may have been short but at least it wasn't a attack on someone just because of where they are from.

On the story though, I would not have paid for his food, it seem like it wasn't something he did spur of the moment, instead something he thought out, so he knew there would be consequences. Why he chose to do them, I do not know, maybe he needed a bed for the night like other suggested, maybe he was trying to get away from someone, I do not know, but you do not do something that blatant, in your face, without thinking something bad will happen. It is possible he didn't think he would get caught, but why would he wait at the register instead of run? Why would he eat so slowly if he was so hungry? The story just seems odd to me.

As for personal guilt, I bet you will never forget that moment, that mans face, everything, but I would suggest that you look at it as a learning experience. Think about what it was tat made you want to write this. If everyone told you that you were right to not pay, would you still feel bad?

Probably a homeless guy hoping to bum a free sandwich off a guilty bystander, don't fall for that BS.

The police officer did his job, the man stole from the restaurant, and got what was coming to him.

I would have paid for it. You get a good feeling from helping others. Plus it'd be a chance to mess with a cop just as he's getting a hardon. Everybody wins.

Anyway, I haven't heard any story like that, thanks for sharing.

EDIT: It doesn't sound to me like the guy was trying to get someone to pay for his sandwich. It's odd that he did this while a cop was standing there. His behavior doesn't make a great deal of sense. People shouldn't make it out to be some cut and dry issue and side against this bizarre fellow.

I have to say I'm surprised at the responses here...

No one thinks the sandwich described in the OP sounds absolutely disgusting!!??!

Also, did the guy look homeless?

The sandwich is amazing
Pickles go surprisingly well with the meatball

He didn't look homeless, but I thought he was not quite mentally sound

I think I have to make a correction, he didn't really "declare" he had no money
More like admit that he had no money

Shit, good observation. Marinara with pickles? I think they had that weird line in My Sassy Girl - "he was the kind of villain that would wear flip-flops in the rain." OP seems relatively strange with his social dilemmas, affiliation with random bums and now his eating habits - I'm eager to see where he's headed.

Eh, I wouldn't feel too guilty about it. I mean you had no idea that he couldn't pay for it. And getting involved after the police got involved would have just stirred up more trouble for you.

But it's a dilema when you get into situations like this. I once gave a few dollars to an old man at a yoshinoya cuz he said he was hungry. And then he walks right on out to go to the nearest liquor store to buy a beer...you mean well, but it doesn't go as planned. And people like him kind of just sour up any time you want to be charitable to anybody, even on spur on the moment.

And technically, what the officer did was perfectly legal. I mean, the man was stealing from the resturant. Quite brazenly too. perhaps getting arrested did him some good (jails are legally required to feed you, no?)

I probably would have paid for the sandwich. It seems silly someone would get arrested for being unable to pay for a five dollar sandwich. On the other hand his behavior does sound weird and if he wasn't mentally sound it may have been for the better that he was arrested.

Something makes me believe this guy was getting in trouble for more than not paying for a sandwich. Hopefully not paying for him allowed the police to make an impact on his life (doubt it). They usually don't need a van and multiple officers for someone who didn't want to pay for a $5 dollar sub (which is probably like a ticket lol).

Edit: He needs pepperoncini's instead of pickles. Then his sandwich is perfectly normal.

Since when does petty theft (less than ten dollars) get you arrested?

Also since when do fast food places give the food before you pay?

I mean, sounds like everyone in the situation except the OP was pretty dumb. You did the right thing by not getting involved; This was not a man begging on the street for money, nor was it a man who barely gets to eat (you said he was big). I don't know what his circumstances were but if you are homeless and hungry there are a great many other ways to get food for free.

Surprised at the number of people in the thread with the view that food shouldn't be a right at all, that concept seems insane to me.

That said though I don't think that applies here, going in to a place selling overpriced sandwiches and eating said overpriced sandwich is probably not the best way to do things, so I'd be surprised if he wasn't ill in some way. Realistically he's not going to jail for a $5 sandwich anyway so stuff should work out ok.

When I was in college I was at the 24-hour grocery store cashier behind a homeless dude who was paying for a sandwich with a pocketful of change. He didn't have enough change after the cashier counted all the nickels and pennies, so I gladly covered the difference.

If I was in the same situation as the OP, I would have let the guy get arrested.

Let's see who can figure out the difference between these situations.

I used to be a fan of meatball sub (at Subway) until I witnessed a customer complaint happening in front of my eyes. A man obviously ordered a foot-long meatball sub with the intent of eating it in-store (in a seat), but I watched from the waiting line the entire process: he got his sub, paid, sat down, opened the sub, then went straight back to the cashier. He held his sub open for the cashier to see... and for other customers in line to see... it was a COMPLETE mess. Now now, meatball subs do tend to get a little messy, with those meatballs pushing out other condiments and that sauce smushing over the poorly constructed mix. With that in mind, that man's meatball sub was the absolute worst meatball sub I have seen. It looked so bad. I can't fully describe it in words, I have no clue what happened to it but I saw a "huge mess" in that wrapper and that's all I can remember. I also remember him cussing up a storm and demanding the manager to speak with him or something. He eventually left the store, with his messy sub on laying there on the counter. It was cleaned up shortly.

ANYHOW

That's my big story about meatball subs. As for this case with the sub-eating intimidating man, I believe what you did (or did not do) was fine. He should now learn the lesson - he must earn his sub, whether through fair work or begging or whatever other non-illegal means.

Tell me that's a sarcasm. Seriously.

If he didn't have money, then he should've stayed home and made himself a sandwich. Why in the blue fucking hell was OP suppose to pay for his sandwich? Because some guy tapped his shoulder and stared at him? What, he didn't have a decency to ask OP to pay for his food? If the guy obviously looked like a homeless dude/bum, then yes. But OP clearly described guy as not look like a homeless, not to mention, he started eating his sandwich in front of the cashier, ignoring the line behind him. An ignorant douchebag? Maybe. Mentally ill? Maybe.

Btw OP, you witnessed some interesting incident while eating your food. I guess some good things came out of it for going to Subway at 2AM.

Don't worry OP. it's not your fault. Me? I would've just snickered at him and pay for my food and walk away.

I don't think you should have paid for his sub, he knew what he was doing and you had no obligation to pay for it.

It sounds like a pretty entertaining experience though, both his indignantly eating it in front of the cashier and his getting arrested for it.

Good call with the meatballs though, that's what I always go for.

Woah, what's with the Republican like attitude. I feel like you're trying to lay the blame on the victim. It's like saying, "oh she deserved to be raped because she was wearing a short skirt." Being hungry shouldn't be a crime. It's not people's fault that they are starving. You're also putting in a lot of assumptions regarding the man who was arrested at subway. Saying he's "lazy." What if he was a war vet who was starving and homeless? Should it matter the reason why someone could be starving and homeless? people shouldnt be starving in this day and age.

He deserved to be arrested for what he did imo, and if he was that hungry maybe he wants to go to jail so that he can get free food in there now rather then do what he did.

Your right. We should let lazy people who don't want to work and just want everything handed to them have it. We should just all send them food hell why not buy him a house to and pay for his bills? I think that would be nice of us to. Making sure he lives in a small house with air conditioning, heater, food, bed, bathroom and he shouldn't have to work at all he can just sit in there all day go out and drink and have nothing to worry about. You have made me seen the light! :D

As long as you're giving handouts, I don't want some small house, I want a mansion. Get on that. Going to quit my job so I can drink and play SC2 all day, brb. Caradoc, I know you'll shoot some money to me, I'll give my paypal information.

See sometimes this makes me wonder if people with attitudes like yours inherently don't like work, but were forced by their parents or whatever to work a lot at an early age and then internalized it as being necessary, and then project their dislike for work onto everyone, assuming that since they don't like work, nobody likes work, and so if we had a society that took care of people that don't work, we would all crash and burn because everyone thinks like you do.

But not everyone does. I work cuz I like to. But I have friends that don't. Its all good, the population is diverse and each person has their own gifts. We don't all need to be labourers or bean counters.

I gave a hot sandwich to a bum once who told me a story about how he'd travel by freight train. That story stuck with me, and I feel I got back what I paid for the sandwich hundreds of times over.

Just cuz your narrow views of the economy preclude valuing things that you don't count as work to you, doesn't mean that it is actually the case. Hell, I know a lot of people that think that playing starcraft or working to produce content for ESPORTS isn't contributing to society and that they should get a 'real' job, so your opinion isn't just yours alone. I just think its fucked up and basically wrong. We can disagree though, good societies have a diversity of viewpoints.

If he asked for the money before he ordered the sub instead of, what i'd presume is arrogantly taking a risk i'd agree with you.

The man didn't know if he'd have somebody to pay for it or not. It just is arrogant for him to order it then assume that somebody will pay for you.

The question to me isn't about that particular guy eating that particular subway sandwich in that particular subway sandwich shop, and whether he had mustard on it or pickles or both and would it have changed everything if he did something a little bit diferent. This amusing anecdote about a guy eating a sandwich has reached 3 (soon to be 4) pages because it lets us make an analogy. It's about society in general. Whether he changed one word here or there might be interesting in some ways, but it's not what I'm talking about.
