Not being able to sleep is a ponderous burden.

One wishes to descend into the dream world, but is met by vicious guards: flying, pecking thoughts, denying all entry.

It is impossible.

To be entirely fatigued but completely restless is an annoying conundrum, a paradoxical oxymoron.

Incessantly turning about, attempting to discover a more relaxed position in hopes of better beckoning long desired slumber.

But nay, it is impossible. One surrenders, leaves the tortuous, flat hell that some use for pleasure.

A dimly lit screen subtly calls, and the insomniac pours his mind onto a blank page, vicariously beating out all stray and direct thoughts.

The resulting effect is negligible. The war continues.

How is it an oxymoron though?
If it's that bad you might consider getting medication for it.

No you don't, I have it pretty bad off and on as well, and it's not like.. "oh I can't sleep"

It's like...my body is asleep but my brain isn't. Your body is in shut-down mode and all you want is to just close your eyes and fall asleep but it never comes TT

I'm pretty sure its an oxymoron because he's "entirely fatigued but completely restless"

Not an oxymoron.

Nice try with the big words though, OP.

If you are suffering from insomnia and you haven't already done it, you should search for the guide I wrote a few years ago regarding insomnia; it's not perfect but it's helped many people.

Hey Water,

Not very poetic, but I'll blame that on the insomnia. I've been suffering from it a lot in the last few months as a result of school. Sleep is a precious thing that when you get enough of it you'll really improve your life because you'll be able to attack more things in your day with more energy.

I suggest deciding to sleep or not. If you're going to lay restlessly just choose to get up or choose to hold yourself in place and try to drift to sleep. The best thing to think about when trying to sleep is nothing; let your mind wander. I have a fantasy world that I've created that I like to think about when I'm trying to get to sleep, usually it puts me right out. Reading a non-engaging book before sleep is also a good way to tire your mind out. I suggest a history book or textbook. Bonus points because you may learn a little before going to sleep.

Also, try to get a routine going before bed. Mine is usually tea & cookies & a TV show, lower my room lighting, and get ready for bed. It lets your body know you're about to go to sleep.

And finally, when in doubt, Fap N' Nap. Best technique there is.
Life is not about making due with what you have; it's about finding out just how much you can achieve. Never settle for anything less than the best. - - - Read my blog!

I had insomnia, but then I went to veterinary medicine college and now I sleep like a baby. I guess what your mind is telling you is that you waste your time with dumb shit instead of learning new stuff and fill your brain with information so it can break it down in categories and store it while you sleep. If you don't have anything to store you don't need to sleep and your mind will raise serotonin levels to signal that it has finished the work you gave it (which is zero because you don't do anything intellectually demanding during the day)
I don't know, lynch me!

If it is real insomnia then go to a sleep clinic wherever you live.

I used to have this problem too, especially during exam times even when I tried sleeping early. You should try a cardio program 3-4 times a week, at mod-high intensities. Doing HITT really helped.

OR

Stay awake for two days straight without sleep, then finally go to sleep early at like 10. I do this to fix jet lag lol.

I was five times more productive and creative before insomnia destroyed my life.

I read that most fatigued, insomnia related cases for men is a sign of depression, handle that and the odds of it improving is probably a lot bigger.

I gotta flatmate who can't sleep - but he insists he loves it... Perhaps it's a state of mind? Have you tried meditating or trying to accept your fate? As someone without this disorder, I can't really empathise; but I'm curious to know if there's any sort of thoughts from preventing you from sleeping, or creating the suffering you face. I'm not sure if societies '9-5' routine is just incompatible with some people.

What Micro said here, guide link: Insomnia/sleep Guide

He did a amazing job writing that guide out and it may not be perfect like he said, it still comes damn close to it in my eyes. ^ ^
His guide so far has helped quite a few people on these forums to adress there sleep problems and even fix it. Hopefully it will do the same for you and help you to get rid of your Insomnia, but even if the guide won't do that, it will be at least a really good informative read on Insomnia.

I'm late to reply, but I just saw this post. I know what works for me is counting. (Not sheep ) Often when I have it's insomnia it is because my mind won't slow down. Counting gives me something to occupy my mind that is boring. I've just gotten in the habit of counting every time I lay down to sleep just to reinforce it. Usually I'm gone before I reach 500. Last night I actually made it past 1000 for the first time in ages.

Go research and reset your sleep schedule.

There's tons of information about that on the internet, there are even smartphone apps that help with that.
Go get some sleep, it's awesome.
