Hello,
Longtime lurker here, new time poster. So I was bored at work today and decided to exercise my brain by doing a quick logo design. I decided to design a logo for NASL, I haven't been a fan of the current mark they use and it really isn't a logo to begin with.
So here is my first attempt at the logo:

There is a color and black & white version, and is completely vector so it can be used on a wide range of collateral pieces.
The color version would be the main version used while the black and white logo would be used for things like letterheads that need to be faxed or newspaper ads that only have B&W printing.
Let me know what you guys think, I figured using my design & advertising skills might allow me to bring something to this awesome community.

Color one looks more appealing to me. B&W looks bland

it looks, well, american

Wow these look cool, If I blink or glance at them quickly, I could swear I see Major League Baseball in there
Edit: Oh snap, didn't see the star in N*rth

I like the color one. Not a fan of their current awkward grunge logo.

Its pretty!
what do you think of putting the star (currently on O) on the A in star :O.

Thanks for the feedback!
The color and black and white version are meant to work with each other. The color version would be the main version used while the black and white logo would be used for things like letterheads that need to be faxed or newspaper ads that only have B&W printing.
The color palette can always be tweaked also, I haven't really had a chance to explore that yet.

From graphic designer to graphic designer, this is great work!

Nope. It's well done. Every coloured logo requires a B&W for printing purposes, not an A or B type of thing. If a logo works well in B&W, then it makes a great logo, whether B&W or coloured.

I think the B&W one with a stronger(?) black would be awesome

That's not bad for a first attempt! I do have some questions though, if I can get a bit nitpicky:
Whats with the faux serif-ness of the N and L? To my eyes they don't seem to frame the content very well (like it weights it disproportionally to the left side). The L also almost looks like it's behind the S, I think that has to do with the curvature of the black outline not being in line with the S, or the serif, or what you want to call it, but to me it seems like a bump in the design slightly. The N isn't so much the issue, but the L seems really out of place to my eyes.
Another thing I found a bit funky was the blue outline to me looks almost like a beveling of sorts. I feel like it's maybe too in conflict with the gradient you used. idk.
with the insertion of the star, it seemed a little odd to replace the O, why not the A in stAr? too tacky? One last question, why is the second line of text not the same width as NASL above it? I get the italicized slant to it (like that btw), but the second line of text is just, short.
I definitely like the font you used and the overall structure is pretty clean, big pluses. Take these opinions however you would like, I think its definitely a great start!

it looks great, albeit something for a collegiate team haha. north americal soccer league! it'd be perfect for that haha
imo would need a bit more of a flashy style, more than gradients or drop shadows hehe

@wo1fwood
Thanks for the good feedback, this is was just an exercise for myself so any feedback is greatly appreciated!
Yeah the added serif-ness of the font is something that still needs a lot of tweaking. I just wanted to play around with the font for practice. I didn't really get a chance to fine tune it. I probably should of made more tweaks before posting.
I tried the star as the "A" in star but the kerning seemed off, I could get it right if I took more time, I was only allowing myself spend a certain amount of time on it.
Maybe I will tweak it in the new future and take it a bit farther, but I'm pretty swamped with real work right now. I will certainly post updates as I make them!

You should add s poll, one for black, color or the original nasl. I personally think that the black and white one is better than the current one! Great job, keep up the great work!

B&W looks like the spurs. I like it

I crossed my eyes and turned it into a 3d image

Wooh pretty.
I feel NASL is long due for a graphic overhaul. It's the most fixable issue that currently plagues the production. Their crew has been sufficiently ramp up in capability, but overall design has been lacking and dated. Having some artistic direction will go a long way for Season 3.
