I am sorry that you are walking away from E-Sports and from the translating. I know its a lot to take the criticism. However, I must admit that if I were in your position, I would not quit. I would work harder, just to prove everyone wrong. Then again, I also love languages. I wish you the best in what ever you decide to do. Thank you for what you did do.

Unless you are absolutely 110% sure that what you're saying is correct and you're willing to defend exactly what you said to the death (even if you wrote ambiguous things and said things you didn't mean to), then you should be as humble and as limited as possible. You should act like you are willing to change every opinion you have, or perhaps go farther than that and act like you want to change every opinion you have, even if you don't feel that way at all. You can be 99% sure that you're completely correct, but you should still act this way. You should do it because it makes it much easier to cope when it turns out you are wrong or when it turns out that everyone hates what you're saying (even if they can't prove that you're wrong and even if it's not wrong at all). And you act that way because people will respond to it better and like you more.

All sorts of very smart and successful people practice this, whether in academia or business. They have extreme and passionate sentiments hidden behind impenetrable walls of humble and limited public speech.

Awesome post, I really agree with these points.

And to Milkis, you have done hard work for this community, although you mishandled this situation, you definatly will be missed, and the silent majority hope for you to come back!!

I just read your post on reddit. It's really controversial, lots of people will hate on you, but honestly, fuck them. I mean, you should have kind of expected a similar backlash; the fact that it was an internet post rather than, say, a public interview makes it all more likely to happen.

However, you shouldn't give up just because a bunch of people started shitting on all that you have said and done. The very fact that you worked so hard for MLG's means you love eSports (or whatever you call it), and a bunch of hating comments on the internet shouldn't stop you from doing what you love, so i hope you change your mind. Maybe take a bit of a break to rest, then come back!

I don't see why he is being so dramatic about leaving, if he can't hang in the community (knowing exactly what it is) then he just needs to get out. There will be other translators. I guess I am writing from a bias because at MLG Anaheim Milkis always seems to be an ass towards the fans (that admittedly were annoying at times) and always had a holier-than-thou type attitude. I mean what was he expecting going to a place that talks about SC2 and shitting on it.

Yeah, screw people who dare take other games besides BW seriously. I mean, how dare these people speak out for their games when other people have already established BW's dominance.

I've always respected Milkis for the tremendous amount of work he's put into the scene and the game(s) he loves, but his comment was begging for the responses he received. And his reaction to that, in return, was the wrong one.

I just need to say this: Yes, there are people out there who have suffered as much/more than Milkis..... but if you guys put yourself in Milkis' shoes, you think you would have a better reaction? And if you say yes, then let me ask you, how would you know? Have you done what he's done? Dealt with what he's had to to deal with?

I'm not saying Milkis is this amazing guy who's completely innocent. What I am saying is, either post to show him support or don't post at all.

I agree. Also sometimes things get to people. Sometimes you may want to post a blog or something. Sometimes you may post something you regret.

In any case - what people should be doing is show some support and try not to insult or flame.

As for him vs any other person?

Well he has done a lot of work for the community already so the least everyone can do is to let things slide when things like this happen and show him support.

Milkis you're awesome, but you are clearly not cut out for the job (as you say yourself). You should definitly stop doing these events because it's stressing you out. Also I'm sick of you crying about it in every tweet/post on teamliquid reddit or whatever the fuck.

Hope you'll be around in the community some day <3

I'm not saying he's right, and i said he should have expected the comments. I'm saying he should ignore the haters. He has a strong opinion about something, others have a different opinion. End of story.

DJwheat did nothing wrong. He didnt attack milkis personally. He attacked his opinion in a very blunt manner. You'd have to be really naive to not see this coming when you in fact did belittle every other game. Milkis did ,in a sense, say fuck you to CS, quake, street fighter, tekken, WC3 etc etc.

I'm sure everyone on this forum whose been around pre SC2 days would agree with him that BW is the shit in terms of skill (still arguable), exposure, coverage, professionalism, and sponsorship. But let be real here. Is it all these things because of the game? No, a lot of this was due to luck, which milkis himself admits. Everything kind of just fell into place in Korea, and only in korea. If this didnt happen, i think SCBW could have met the same fate as games like Age of Empires or warcraft 2.

How does this make SC more of an esport than anything else? Games like CS had a massive following around the world. Watching top players play in first person view is fucking AMAZING. I used to watch Marvel/street fighter vids (enough to learn balance issues and game mechanics to a certain extent) and I sure as hell dont play those games. I just watched some quake vid where they explain what was going on in the player's mind. All these games have players dedicated enough to try to be the best and compete at the top. Sure, most people cannot make a living out of it, but some can. But thats more of a cultural thing. You cannot say SC is the only esport because Korea is so far ahead of the world when it comes to gaming culture.

But fuck, in the end it doesnt even matter. Its just his definition of esports which he should have expected to be very unpopular. People will argue on the internet. They're not gonna say, "hey sir, I respect your opinion but i disagree." Its a damn shame but if little things like this got to him maybe its better for him to lay low for a while. Of course everyone appreciates his contribution and his opinion piece wasn't gonna change that. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. But leaving in this way is pretty weak.

Well Milkis, I thank you for the contributions you have made towards the community. You owe nothing to anyone, so you don't have to defend yourself. Good luck towards what you want to do in the future. You should always put yourself and those closest to you first, because it's a dog eat dog world out there. If this was causing you so much problems and/or stress, then I guess it's for the best. Thanks again and good luck.

I am sorry that people are assholes, but Milkis, good luck in the future for you. I just want you to know that I appreciated everything that you did for the game and the community. I hope you that happiness finds you well whether it be with eSports or whatever.

Some people take years to get good at it and be at peace with all the things the community says and other people should just avoid it completely. Keep in mind that when you say something publicly and read so much feedback, you are going to get every single kind of response. You may as well not read the feedback and just imagine "what is every possible way someone could respond to this?" There's really no difference. If you are seeking a consensus response, keep in mind that consensus easily changes one day to the next. Using large scale public feedback is very very tricky. Most people don't need to. Ask advice privately from people you trust and respect. I'm sure you'd do great with just that.

I feel like anyone who has enjoyed a Milkis translation owes him more than calling him silly or calling his bluff. I wasn't going to write anything but then I remembered that I've benefited from a lot of work that he's given me freely. Keep in mind that Milkis has contributed WAY more to the community than he's taken away. If you think he's making a mistake by posting this and leaving, then you should try to imagine what comment you could write here to get him to change his mind and make him feel comfortable returning and doing more translations. Simply pointing out that it's a mistake is not very helpful =/

Everything Nony writes is always so spot on. Wise words.

It's sad more people don't get it. Telling someone to man up and take it is so misguided. Milkis deserved more respect than that hate thread on reddit. Or the many here calling him oversensitive. So many idiots in this "community".

Amazed how narrow minded people are, Milkis with his post insulted a major part of the whole fan/player/associates of the eSport spectrum in the west, more or less calling games like Counter-Strike, Quake not an eSport, whom I think have achieved more as a game than SC:BW since they we're global not limited to the extent that SC:BW was.

As a follower of eSports for the last decade I was highly insulted by the post he made, and for responding to his post, I'm the villain?
I'm just criticizing him for the post he made as an insult to everyone involved in eSport that wasn't a part of SC:BW.

And I find it highly entertaining that people show him support in calling "us" stupid/assholes/retards for defending something we're passionate about that he literally shit on.

This is just proof that most people on the internet are brainless zombies that follow the trend of the popular opinion.

"Starcraft is the only e-sport" -Milkis

"You just said 'Fuck you!' to every gamer that doesn't play starcraft!"

Then people ride this opinion until this thread was made. Now observe as this thread was made:

"You guys are insulting me and not respecting my opinion!" -Milkis

"We're so sorry!!! Don't leave, you're great!!" -everyone

The fact of the matter is, Milkis is very elitist and looks down on other games. Nice. Cool opinion, bro. I don't agree with you AT ALL but I'm not going to look down on you or insult you.

I also wouldn't throw in the towel and make a giant blog whining and complaining like a little girl. Sorry to "break the trend" but seriously man the fuck up. This is the internet. If you don't recognize this amazing potential career you have sitting in front of you, then you don't deserve it.
