DreamHack is a LAN party, a local area network gathering with demo competitions, gaming competitions and more. It's arranged twice annually at the Elmia exhibition centre in Jönköping, Sweden and also twice a year at Expolaris Congress Centre, Skellefteå, Sweden and holds the world record (as recognized by the Guinness Book of Records and Twin Galaxies) for the world's largest LAN party and computer festival. Jönköping is a city in southern Sweden with 89,396 inhabitants (2010).[1] It is the 9th most populous city of Sweden. Jönköping is situated by the southern end of Sweden's second largest lake, Vättern. The original town Jönköping has grown together with Huskvarna and Norrahammar forming a contiguous urban area, since 1971 wholly within the same municipality. (Source)

Here you can go with your equipment early Thursday but it will be closed for the rest of the event until Sunday. [image loading]
These are the two other Entrances that you can use, I believe you can also get your Armband from both entrances for the event.

At Dreamhack you obviously need to get your beauty-sleep, that's why there are special halls dedicated for this purpose.
From my experience the floor is pretty cold(it's mostly stonefloor). But something on the ground like a blanket or a real mattress should suffice. You can also rent hotel rooms in Jönköping. The closest is Scandic Elmia, but I am pretty sure that one is booked. There's a cheap Motel/hotel next to Sibylla that I also however think is fully booked. You can also book a room at any of the hostels in Jönköping. For example http://www.rocksjon.se/vandrarhem/en_index.html or http://www.hhv.se/index1.htm .

However I feel like if you have bought a ticket for the BYOC and have the possibility to sleep at the venue that you should do that, since it is quite a bit cheaper : ).

I wouldnt be to worried about your sleeping-stuff getting stolen, but i wouldnt bring a sleeping-bag made of gold and diamonds.

It is very important to be nice and clean(as we all know), and to do that you kinda need access to a shower. Well you are in luck! Because there are showers at the venue! There are also various Bathrooms spread out around the venue. And if you don't want to shower at Dreamhack you can either shower at your hotel/hostel or you can shower at Racketcentrum(the local Tennis/Squash/Badminton center) however I would not recommend this because It's kinda against their rules, and it is frowned upon. But if you have no other options you might sneak in a shower. But don't be surprised if someone tells to you to get out.

At the Elmia exhibition Centre there are quite few food shops, most of them are in the Hall D where they sell hamburgers, tacos, pan pizza (Billys) and normal pizza. There are also hotdog stands outside of the area(rätt ingång).

If you don’t want to eat food inside the venue you can walk outside to various food places.

Sibylla – If you walk down the hill and around Kinnarps arena you will get to a place called Sibylla, here they serve Hamburgers, Pizza, Mashed potatoes and meatballs, Sausages, hotdogs, bratwurst. + Show Spoiler +
[image loading] Start by walking down the road.
[image loading]Keep on the right side
[image loading]walk across the parking lot.
[image loading]Walk across the street and there you have it.

Willys – The local supermarket in the area. You can get to this place by walking down the road on the left side and take a left down towards Vättersnäs, you then turn right at the crossing and walk into the tunnel. You then take a left after the tunnel and walk up the stairs. You have now arrived at Willys, here you can purchase almost anything you need. They sell a variety of food, candy, sodas, Ice cream. + Show Spoiler +

[image loading]Go up the stairs and walk through the parking lot
[image loading]Here's one of the two entrances of Österängens Centrum. Here you can see the pizzeria and a kiosk.

Cucchini – This is the local pizzeria, which is open from 11-22 or 11am to 10pm. Here you can eat if you want something other than hamburgers or hotdogs. This place is in my opinion one of the best pizzerias in Jönköping(though I live in the area so I might be a bit biased  ). Here you can buy Kebab, which is basically Dönerkebab with pork that you put either on your pizza or in pita bread.

McDonalds – In Jönköping we have two McDonalds restaurants. One is at A6 and one is down town.

Burger King – Until recently we did not have Burger King in Jönköping, but they opened a new place at Ekhagen, which is quite close to Elmia.

Max – Max is a Swedish chain of Hamburgers that is placed around Jönköping and other parts of Sweden. We have three restaurants here in Jönköping, one is next to Burger King at Ekhagen, one is next to ICA Maxi (another supermarket) down town and the third one is at Torpa which is on the west part of Jönköping.

Buses – In Jönköping the buses are a common mode of transportation. From Elmia there are around 4 buses that goes throughout the municipality. The most important ones are #1 and #13.

#1 – This bus has its name in Red and is called ‘Ettan’ or number one in English. From Elmia it can take you down town all the way to a place called Råslätt. It is the most frequent bus that goes from Elmia.

#13 – This bus will take you from Elmia to A6 Centre. It’s a mall that has a lot of stores where you can buy various items.

Jönköpings Länstrafik Webpage, here you can check the schedule of all the buses

Taxi – If you don’t want to take the bus or walk you can order a Taxi. It is quite pricy if you compare it to the bus. But it will get you there faster and you can tell the driver where you want to go.
Taxi Jönköping : 036-34 40 00
Taxi Kurir: 036-31 31 31
City Taxi – 036-12 12 12

Bike – If you have one you can use the easiest way to travel in Jönköping is with a bike, but since it will be winter when Dreamhack is happening I doubt you can take the bike anywhere.

A6 is a huge shopping center where you can buy almost anything, the easiest way to get there is by taking #13 bus towards Ryhov (the hospital in jönköping) and get off at A6 Center. There's a map of the area once you go in and you can enter through four different entrances

Elgiganten – this is a very nice place if you need to replace your computer parts or need to buy a new mouse or keyboard. It isn’t as close as Webhallens Dreamhack store but it is less of a queue and items rarely go out of stock.

Ikea – I think everyone knows what Ikea is. You can buy furniture etc. at IKEA.

Coop Forum – This is another Supermarket, it has a bit more variety than Willys and is a bit cheaper but it isn’t as close as Willys.

Intersport – If you need new sneakers or running shoes this is the place. Here you can buy anything sport related.

Teknik Magasinet – This is a nifty shop for when you need something special or just feel like browsing. Here you can buy various Electronics and Soft airgun/paintball related items.

Various shops – at A6 there are a lot of shops and stores, you can almost find anything you need at A6. Clothing store, food store, perfume, coffee shops and other shops
.
McDonalds – Inside A6 there is one McDonalds store where you can order food, and outside close to the roundabout there is another McDonalds with a drive-in.

Subway – Down the city there is a Subway if you want something to eat. Easiest way to get there is to take #1 bus towards Råslätt, this will take you down town, and go off at Rådhusparken. From there you just walk back over the wooden bridge and to your left is subway.

Random shops – Here there are also a lot of different stores and shops.

Bars – Here is where most of the bars and pubs are. If you take the bus to Juneporten you have O’learys sports bar to your right.

My English is not the best nor am I very good at writing stuff, I simply did this because I want everyone that comes to Dreamhack to have a good time. If you have any questions feel free to PM me or write in this thread. I’d be more than happy to help you on your quest in Jönköping and Dreamhack!

I've booked to come over on the 23rd and I have a few questions, would be great if anyone could help me out.

I arrive at gothenburg airport, what's the best/cheapest way to get to Jönköping? Also, I need somewhere to spend the first and possibly the last night (this depends whether you can sleep in the DH arena on the sunday night), are there cheap hotels/hostels around that I can stay in?

cheers

You can either take the bus or take the train from Gothenburg. It takes around 2 hours to get from Gothenburg to Jönköping. There is Scandic hotel like RIGHT next to Elmia, and down at Sibylla there is a Formula 1 Hotel. I think Scandic is quite expensive though. like 130$ a night, but Formule 1 is around 40$ a night.
http://www.hotelformule1.com/gb/hotel-3074-formule1-jonkoping-elmia/index.shtml

EDIT:and train from Gothenburg C to Jönköping C is around 17$
EDIT2: Here is a site where you can order Bus tickets and Train tickets. And it is in English! :http://www.sj.se/start/startpage/index.form?l=en

Thanks for the guide! This will make my stay a lot easier :-)

I have another question though: If I want to take a break from the Dreamhack madness and explore the area, do you know some nice places to go sightseeing?

Hmm during the winter you can't really see anything, but if it's not too much bad weather you can go to the park and see the view over the town. You can also go to the match museum but I don't think it is open during the winter. Hell, I don't think anything noteworthy is open during the winter : (

EDIT: The actually Match museum is open between 11 am and 3 pm Tuesday to Friday.

Hey I just wanted to ask another question if you don't mind I was wondering if you could tell me a bit about the sleeping area, what are the chances of me actually getting a decent night's sleep there? Also, is it ok for us to leave our sleeping bags in this area without fear of them being stolen? Me and my friends are a bit apprehensive about this...

Thanks again for the guide, I think I'm going to print this off and take it with me

I didnt have trouble sleeping in the sleeping hall. And we left our mattress and blankets there and they didnt get stolen. But the second night there was some "fjortisar" sleeping our mattress but we just kicked them away. If someone steals your sleepingbag you just take anotherone and walk to the other side of the hall.

Sweet guide Ewli. We should do one of these at the DH-office but you beat us to it.

If you plan on sleeping in the sleeping hall, make sure to bring earplugs (can also be bought on site in the Info-desk) since the background noise of a couple of thousand nerds sleeping can be quite immense. Usually there is no problems leaving your sleeping equipment in the hall but there is always a few people that "sleepingbagsurf". Which means you might have to kick some kid out but thats generally not a problem.

I wouldnt be to worried about your sleeping-stuff getting stolen, but i wouldnt bring a sleeping-bag made of gold and diamonds.

If anyone have any other questions about Dreamhack im happy to answer.

Yeah just tell them to get off your stuff, they mostly will be embarrassed and move, else you can just get some crew/handle it yourself(gently!)
