0.8.10 was the last version. TL player stops development due to multiple reasons - mainly because to lack of time, but also because people seems to prefer browser behemoths instead of light clients. I see no reason to swim against the current and invest more time and effort on this one.
Thanks for everyone downloading and supporting it, and for the appreciations !

Cristian Amarie

Current version: 0.8.10
Latest changes
- 0.8.10: Added crash handler.
- 0.8.9: Fixed bug when clicked Open (did not open browser with stream but still performed Play).
- 0.8.8: Added Contact and Update features.
Search and play are now in place (same window, without spawning additional instances of executable).
Temporarily removed self-signed certificate.
- 0.8.6: Added self-signed certificate to binaries.
- 0.8.5: Fix search internal bug.
- 0.8.4: Reverted to IE hosting.
- 0.8.3 (Chrome based): Improved channel retrieval for antiviruses rewriting gzip into xml
- 0.8.2 (Chrome based)
- IE rendering engine completely replaced with Chrome
- eliminate the need for IE 7 or later (gzip code now uses zlib instead of wininet)
- setup checks for Adobe Flash and asks user to install if not detected
- some bugfixes.
- the standalone client is now removed since it can't function as a standalone executable (as IE version did).
- 0.8.1: added event names for ON AIR streams; added viewers count.
- 0.8.0: added "always on top" caption option.
- 0.7: added intermediate search pages, error reporting (if any).
- 0.6: added xfire.com streams support.

Hello everyone,
I am a longtime fan of TL and watching streams for some years now I come up with a small desktop player (Windows for now) which can perform a number of features regarding streams - namely, play a stream, search for streams, display/notify events and more.

Not all features are implemented at this time and not all stream providers - please remember that this is a work in progress, although I am using the player daily for some time now without any problems than occasional bugs that prevents me to see a good fight

Where to get it
That been said, here are the download links:
TeamLiquid Player - Installer
(Note. The installer proposes by default user profile directory, not Program Files directory).

What if it does not start
Most likely a required component is not installed. All runtime dependencies have been eliminated, but is still a work in progress and bugs can happen. Try to drop me a mail with details on how to reproduce, what environment do you have (operating system, browsers versions, VS runtime - nerd stuff but I know you guys know what I'm talking about).

Requirements
The installer checks for Internet Explorer 7 or later. Windows XP SP3 or later (not checked by setup) is recommended, although it should run also on older platforms, but IE7+.
It will not work with default Flash Player 6 supplied by XP. Install the latest Flash Player version (the next version of setup will take care also of this).

How it works
At startup, the program displays a very simple window, offering 7 buttons
- Reload - reloads the current page
- 3 Streams: ON AIR, Live and User streams - clicking on each will search for the respective TL streams
- Contact - Opens default mail client for contact and feedback
- Update - Checks for update and offers options for download and install.
- Spawn - opens a new instance.

The upper right edit allows you to type a string which is searched among TL streams, and channels matching title, description etc. are displayed.

The search results will be displayed in the results list, which offers two buttons: Play and Open.
When Play is missing, usually this means the channel does not support embedding.
Play will launch a separate instance and load the stream inside the player, while Open simply opens the default browser to the channel URL.

Feedback
Any suggestions, bug reports, feedback of any kind - please hit Contact button and let me know what improvement and fixes you would like to have in day to day running.

For the precaute user:
- the executables are not *yet* signed with a certificate
- for checking for viruses, here are the virustotal results (don't take for granted) of installer

Some questions for TL guys here:
1. I understand that the player does not display the advertisement as the website does, and this may be an unwanted side effect of the desktop client. I would like to implement this feature (to display in the upper bar the advertisement as appears on the website, or perhaps at startup screen, on a periodic timer etc.). How can I know the technical details so I can add this feature, so TL gets supported by the banner also from the client?
2. If TL likes the application (I hope so ), perhaps they want to be advertised as such by some distinctive UI elements (logo, setup, texts etc.) ?

Not sure where to send these questions, but I hope someone from TL sees this and can help with these questions (I admit that I'm a total noob of blogs/forums here...)

Interesting. Does it support chat channels? I usually pop out the video and chat for most streams so I can watch the stream and chat at once (no dual screen for me D and I've been hoping there was a better solution than just opening both as individual windows in chrome.

@Bobbias Frankly I didn't think on chat yet, the main focus was on searching and playing, the next step being the calendaring/events + notifications (while adding unimplemented stream providers at this time, such as xfire.com).

why put it into the user directory? My user directory is on my C: which is just for my windows and doesn't have much space, I got another partition (as most people) for my files where I have my stuff organized and easier to find, as that is the reason I wouldn't DL the installer, maybe there is an option to pick an alternative path, if not, you should add that, I hate programs that just install somewhere without asking.

Besides that, great thing indeed, gonna DL it now

@LML Thats what Chrome does, for example, and simply for a small standalone application Program Files is not the prime candidate. But I will add user directory pick for the setup, sure. Thanks for feedback !

can you add a feature to auto-refresh?, and also to be able to see on air AND featured?, if so I would leave this open on my second monitor 24/7

Also would be nice (but less of a priority i think), for the program to audibly notify me when some of my favorite streamers show up in the list (huk signs on, it dings or plays a sound)

amazing program so far.

This is pretty cool but I have to put up with ads again so that makes me take a harder look at whether this saves me any time or convenience compared to just opening firefox and going to TL to see the list and click what I want to watch. Props for making it, though.

Although you are competiting with www.teevox.com which is a very good multi-stream watching site, just bear that in mind

Really nice, but i totally agree with this one! An "always on top" button would be super nice. I love to play a funmap or dota or something similar while watching streams... and dont have two monitors. Also, some form of iRC/Chat functionality would make this ever more badass.

Thanks for the work you put into this.

I get this error after clicking on any of the stream buttons:

Excellent work, looks awesome! Can't wait to try it out.

Out of curiosity, is Twitch.tv supported? I know it's part of JTV, so I assume the back-end stuff works the same for both. I ask this mainly because some streamers have switched to using Twitch and I'd love to see them in this player.

Keep up the awesome work!

1. Autorefresh - will do. I am planning custom searches anyways (where you can group, for example, ON AIR, non featured *and* a search for string).
2. Events/notification system is in progress. Will incorporate support when a new stream appear online and a list of bookmarked/favorite streams, so when a new stream appears online *and* is in favorite list, will notify user (sound, popup etc.) This will take a while (I am out of town now) but will do it.

Many thanks for suggestions!

For sure what's on TL site will be the maximum, there's no extra value in content, but just a barebone convenient client which does simple operations. But you're welcome to try it (btw, Firefox 7.0.1 is opening in 20 secs in my monster machine while tlplayer opens instantly; that was one of the many reasons to do it besides a lot of fun and watching streams).

It is an IE embedded which uses a custom in-memory HTML tailored for providers (i.e. for a justin.tv HTML will embed their flash, for livestream.com another flash etc).
Flash is not directly embedded (too much pain for now to do it) but I considered it. Also I have versions which uses Chrome or Firefox for embedding - the reason to use IE for now is the download size (IE is for now already on user machine, while CEF - Chrome Embedding Framework - is 15 MB release libcef.dll + ICU dlls, and this is too much for a barebone client).
The ads comes directly from flash player, I'm not doing anything for this.

Win32 (no 64 bit flash AFAIK so it makes little sense for now) and C++ only, Visual Studio 2010. MT CRT library, IE 7 or better recommended.
Probably I will make it open source when in beta and a more civilized source and less harcoded things present; also I would like to consult the TL guys first since this is, as they say at the beginning - "This is our home". And I try to respect that... I asked them if I should implement ads in the client so they site will be supported - heck, they can even ask me to see source code first or tell me to forget about the client. And I will do it if they will tell me to do so.

Point taken. Will add viewers count in client, too. Any other things you would like to see besides channel and viewers count? Sort descending for viewers or things like that?

Usually this means a network related error, but can also be a simple bug in search. Can you tell me more about what search have you done, OS version, IE version ? this can help me tracking the error.
On the other hand, I will add error logging (useful for reporting back) and a crash handler as well.

Will decrease it, but I have to keep a minimum to not have the custom UI elements overlap (the player does not contains Windows controls, everything is custom drawn). What will be the an acceptable minimum size for you? (Not 1pixel/1pixel, I hope

Well, say, I would like the program to also notify me whenever my favourite [insert x game here] streamer comes online, even though that stream is not featured on TL.net. I guess what I'm looking for is an online/offline check for certain streams.

Really nice, but i totally agree with this one! An "always on top" button would be super nice. I love to play a funmap or dota or something similar while watching streams... and dont have two monitors. Also, some form of iRC/Chat functionality would make this ever more badass.

Thanks for the work you put into this.

Will consider the embedding of chat as well as a previous user suggested. But I have to do some research first.

Both twitch and justin works the same, in fact the query for channels reports them both as justin type. For the player is no difference - in fact I see normally both in player.

Why could an old Internet Explorer possibly be a problem?

Yes, the player uses an embedded IE browser for displaying content (both search results and player), and also uses WinInet for performing HTTP.

About an old IE: yes, it could be a problem. If is IE6 for sure, since it cannot process internally gzip responses decoding into XML. It's a known bug (InternetSetOption with INTERNET_OPTION_HTTP_DECODING gives ERROR_INTERNET_INVALID_OPTION although they say it is supported - and the gzip HTTP response is not properly decoded).
An alternative would be to not let WinInet to do the decoding and perform the decoding myself using zlib or so, but is too much work for an old browser and I'll probably won't implement it.

Also would be nice (but less of a priority i think), for the program to audibly notify me when some of my favorite streamers show up in the list (huk signs on, it dings or plays a sound)

amazing program so far.

"Did not complete" or "was not completed" are both fine.

I'm on WinXP SP2, and I have no idea what IE version I have. Also, now I know this program uses IE, I'm afraid I am discontinuing use.

Downloaded the installer, its running beautifully! That'd be cool if you could incorporate the event names as well as the stream names.

For example: the TL sidebar looks like this

Teamspeak Tourney
[SC2] Link # 1
[SC2] Link # 2
[SC2] Link # 3

But your player only looks like this

[SC2] Link # 1
[SC2] Link # 2
[SC2] Link # 3

I Can download, install and run the program just fine. However, once the program is opened, I can't seem to load a single stream. All I see is a red X where the video should be. Any idea why? My flash is up to date.

1. To check IE version, simply open IE, click Help and then click About. It will display the complete IE version.
2. Why don't use just because of IE? You have technical reasons, or just hate the guts of IE
BTW, would you prefer to install a version using Chrome to render HTML at the expense of a considerably larger installer? (17 MB at least for Chrome runtime - and not a stable one)

Third highest used web browser around these days. I'm not sure I understand why we'd need to install extra stuff if we already have it.

However, IE has been proven, version after version, to be pretty damn godawful, and with today's internet speeds, ~17MiB is not a killing blow; especially seeing the nature of the program.

You don't already have Chrome, if that's what you mean. You have to install it. And anyways the version of Chrome you have depends on Gecko version, which is changed from version to version and not very reliable in terms of embedding and runtime - but I digress.
The use of IE was simple - at least for now, it *is* already installed on Windows machines and I don't have to bring yet some other browser runtime just to be non-IE.

Perhaps the best bet would be to offer three versions, one for IE, one for Chrome, one for FF regarding browser embedding (and maybe one having them all to let use pick). I will consider this.

Unfortunately, yes, you have to re-download it. (It would have been better if I'd implemented this one in the first place, but...)
Sorry for the inconvenience.
