so the other car blog sort of got me thinking again, i've been wanting a new car for a while and i'd like some advice from you guys.

so i've had my first car, a 99 single cab tacoma for almost two years now, and i want to upgrade. i'm looking more towards a sportier car, like a coupe or something. but there's a couple things i haven't made up my mind about yet, the main thing being new vs. used cars. i would buy a used car, but i don't wanna end up with a car that someone beat the shit out of (especially considering what kind of car i want to buy) and i'm looking to keep this car, i don't plan on getting a new one for a while. so for this reason i'm kind of leaning towards buying a new car, but i haven't decided yet.

now the next issue: money. i've got about $7k saved up. i have a full time job, and although i don't get paid a lot, most of what i get paid ends up as my disposable income as i don't have many bills i have to pay (pretty much just phone and internet every month). i'm also expecting to receive a $10,000 lump sum in the next year and a half which i plan to put towards my car. i have no credit rating, never even owned a credit card, but getting someone to cosign isn't a problem (my parents will gladly cosign). i'm not sure what the interest rate is on a cosigned loan though, so if someone could inform me on this matter it would be very helpful. i also plan on selling my current car, which i could probably get like ~$4000 for.

what i'm looking for in a car (not a strict list)
preferably less than $30k (willing to make exceptions though, as i plan to have this car for a while)
2 door preferred
manual (this for sure)
sportyish, relatively fast
v6 (also not too strict on this, a 4 cyl could be fine too)
good gas mileage is a plus (since i'll have this car for a while i'll be taking it wherever i go throughout the US)
not a wrx
faster than a wrx (my friend has a wrx lol)

as you can see my requirements aren't too strict, haha. so please, just throw out any advice or recommendations you have.

i had a credit rating of like 630 (which is now fixed since i resolved the problem that was on it) and had to get my gf's dad to cosign for me... they gave me a 5% loan, but his credit is really good too, so it's relative.

well i'm lucky then, because my dad has pretty good credit so i should get a good interest rate, awesome.

Can't go wrong with japanese cars, or german.

go VW or Honda.

Motors last forever. Parts a bit more expensive on VW's tho.

i've got a bmw 325i, and i've got to say, it's been a niiice ride. i got a 2004 for ~16,000.

Downsides: 4 doors, 4 cyl.

Upsides:
Manual, Sporty, quick, it's definitely got some get up and go

Neutral point:
Gas milage is okay. I get around 25-28 highway, and 21-24 city. Not the greatest ever, but definitely not as bad as an SUV or anything like that.

Plus, you roll around in style in a beemer.

All in all, i've been extremely pleased with my car.

You'll be hard pressed to beat a WRX as far as performance

with that kind of change, a cosigner and a FT job, you should absolutely be going for a certified pre owned (CPO) since you can get a mildly used one with a warranty and a heavy duty inspection from the dealership. New, you will lose a lot coming off of the lot. You can get a CPO with like under 10k if you really wanna keep it fresh. New car, you essentially pay for the new smell and that's it.

definitely finance something ,since you have no credit to speak of and it will help majorly with that. You really need to get a CC dude!

cosign rates depend very much on the people involved. but a person with a very good score will make up for a bad or no credit.

as for the car... ever look at a Hyundai Genesis?? They're pretty badass, and come in coupe form, and are decent on gas considering that it's sporty. I love the audi A5, but that's over 30k, even for the 08...

you could also make me insane jealous and get one of these badboys, but don't do it unless it;s the v8!

it's kinda tough finding one for cheap with low miles though (from my 5 minutes on craigslist). it would be cool though, i've always wanted a bmw.

if you plan on getting a luxury car like that, you absolutely should be going to a dealer for a CPO, not some random momo on craigslist. You have no idea the pain you will feel in your wallet fixing a German car.

However, bmw and audi have pretty dope CPO programs

http://www.bmwusa.com/standard/content/cpo/default2.aspx
http://cars.audiusa.com/

Both are up to 6 years/100k, and I don't think they certify cars over 60K or so. And they usually have rate specials, which are hard to qualify for (I got boned out of a 0.9 because I never had a big purchase before) but with a cosigner, you can get it

I can't for the life of me get rid of my BMW. I need the money and no one wants to spend the money for it.

I would recommend a BMW if you do not mind paying a lot to maintain it. It has been an awesome car for me.

i like this cpo thing, i didn't know about it before. i'll definitely be getting a cpo now, thanks.

the audi seems pretty cool, but a little too expensive for my taste. i like the genesis as well, but i'm not too sure about buying a hyundai. i'll look into it for sure though.

also could you also recommend some more models to look at? i think i'd rather decide what kind of car i want, then try to find where i can get a good deal for it.

When I bought mine it was a certified used car, I worked at the dealership so I noticed a little pinging sound in the engine, decided to drop a new engine in for $50.00 deductible. I was excited about that lol.

For BMW I would recommend a 335Ci has a bigger engine and is a two door. If you want something a little more compact I would recommend a 135, but these are a bit pricey used at the moment. If you want an SUV I would say the X3 it is built on the same chasis as a 3 series but has the body of an SUV and is more reliable than its bigger version the X5. If you want the a beast of a car can try to find a decent used M3. Decent as in not having the shit driven out of it which would be rare.

I am a BMW nut though so take this with a grain of salt.

Hawk mentioned the Genesis and it seems to fit your criteria. As some additional pluses, Hyundai has been ranking very well in JD Power initial quality and long-term quality surveys for years now. And if that's not enough, there's the ridiculous warranty to add peace of mind.

It's probably at least worth a test-drive. There aren't a lot of options for two-door sports cars in that price range. It's moreso the luxury guys that put more effort into these less-practical "toys."

The last two years, Hyundai has improved greatly. All of the reviews have been saying that, and there was at least one or two people here with the Genesis that I was talking about. It legit looks nice, and all the reviews have been very good. I doubted it too and looked before I bought my car and seriously considered it for a bit. It's honestly worth a look at least.

You can try looking up certified WRXs, but they're incredibly rare and expensive when you do find.

http://www.edmunds.com/finder/car-finder-results.html?finder_q=type:Coupe;price:$15k to $25k;

Edmunds is always a good resource. Those are new coupes under 30K. You can just go back and find the used versions, but the style for all are pretty similar. The accord is nice, as is the civic.

The Kia Forte 2011 coupe is legit nice too, it's odd... not a performance car or anything. My sister's friend has and you do a double take because Kias shouldnt actually look nice. Like the Hyundai, they've majorly upped their lineup the last two years so they're not just shitty Korean cars anymore

You might be able to luck out and find an Infinity G35 coupe or a Nissan 350 coupe (they look very similar) for under 30k as a CPO (also: the Genesis is a total rip on the G35)

The A5 is probably out of your range, but if you're not 100% about a coupe, the A4 is awesome, sporty, AWD and pimp on the inside. I got an 08 2.0 turbo one in march with 40K or so for $20K pre tax and all that jazz. I put down like $12k, payments are quite low. I wanted one but the Audi was the last car I looked at because I thought I couldn't afford til I saw the CPO program. I was looking at all new cars prior... that was dumb as shit. New cars are dumb.

Also take a look at the GTIs. My buddy got one right after I did. Very similar engine and sound (it's also turboed) but it's a hatchback body.

Newer years of Passats and Jettas are kind of nice too, depending on what class you look at. However, no coupe there. Coupe kind of limits you a bit =]

i guess a coupe isn't necessary, but overall i think i prefer it so far.

also, what are your thoughts about a camaro? they seem fairly cheap and have a good amount of horsepower for the price.

also i just checked out the v6 accord, that one seems pretty nice.

If I was you, and I'm not, I would try an RX8 r3, miata, and a TDI. Not the fastest cars at this price point but arguably the most fun.

QFT! RX-8 R3 FTW! It's a ton of fun, probably the most fun out of the normal coupes you would normally pick between. Eats gas like mad though

can anyone recommend a resource for finding cpo cars? i've been looking on manufacturers' websites and using their cpo search engine, but it never gives a very good variety (not expecting a great variety, but more than like 1 car within 250 miles would help)

I personally dont care for the camaros styling, esp considering that all the american muslce cars out now actually look pretty good. it's meh to me, but i woudlnt be spending money. as far as performance and all that jazz, dunno much about it

for cpos, just google dealerships nearby for whatever brand it is that you want and they will have a certified section of their website. just search in there.

Yeah I always liked the evos, though I think I prefered the earlier 00 ones. I was always about the WRX personally, but those are even harder to find haha. I thought the evo was fairly hard to find, but a few just popped up locally on a quick search so you might have a shot. But for something like the evo or WRX, which is turboed (an expensive fix, they start to go at 75k-100k) and designed to race, people will beat it up and it's a must to get the CPO w full warranty.

I couldn't find a WRX with one and I gave up =[ I also got in a wreck, so I had no car so I had only a few weeks to make a decision. You've got the luxury of waiting, which is the best way to shop, so just look and enjoy being able to try a whole bunch of different cars!

I am personally looking into the new Hyundai Veloster. Especially the i-Vision version is looking very good and sexy imo. 1.6 GDI, 3-door coupé, 6-manual transmission, € 26.995,00 in Europe but presumable a lot cheaper in America.

Looking very slick and dependable.
http://www.hyundaiusa.com/veloster/

Edit: on the American site I can't find any specific versions or prices but with an American zip code you should be fine to ensemble your "dream car".

hmmm, it's looking like i shouldn't get an evo now. they are relatively expensive (for me), and if the engine goes at like 75k-100k that's not so good for me... and i just got an insurance quote online for it and it would cost me $500/month (i'm only 19... sigh insurance).

seems like the genesis coupe is looking like the best option so far.

Comes in v6 and 4cl, and many different trims, <$25k. The styling and roominess is better than a civic imo. I don't know if it's faster than a wrx though, but it gets amazing gas mileage which is more important to me.

You've got the luxury of waiting, which is the best way to shop, so just look and enjoy being able to try a whole bunch of different cars!

hmmm, it's looking like i shouldn't get an evo now. they are relatively expensive (for me), and if the engine goes at like 75k-100k that's not so good for me... and i just got an insurance quote online for it and it would cost me $500/month (i'm only 19... sigh insurance).

seems like the genesis coupe is looking like the best option so far.

it doesnt go then exactly, but it's around the time in the car's life that you have to start being aware of the condition of it. it's something to be considered with any older turboed car, especially one that's pure performance like the evo or WRX.

also, before you go real deal shopping, you should just compile a list of stuff you're interested in (exact year, make, milage, etc) and give it to your insurance agent so they can give you a quote. You give them the exact car and theyll give you a number and you go off of that. It also saves you the disappointment of falling in love with a car and realizing that you can't afford it. Especially at 19 you wanna do that, since there are cars that they will hammer you on

I got one of these in March and I LOVE it, highly recommended ^^ drives sick awesome too. :D

How goes the search??

I just thought of this again because there was something about the new camaro lz1 (the super sport version of the car). Personally, I don't care for the look of the car, but american muscle is always just damn badass!
