Yeah, just some random blog post by random TL'er.
So I wasn't going to buy a mechanical keyboard because of the high price, then I saw in the computer mall in Hong Kong this compact style 108keys keyboard with a low price of HK$659 (85USD/53GBP).
The specs: Ducky DK1008 Mechanical Keyboard Switch Type: Cherry MX Brown Layout: US ASCII 104 + 4 (w/ 10-Key) Key Plastic: ABS, Key Characters: Chinese + English USB: 6KRO, PS/2: NKRO
Oh and I made no hesitation and purchased it straight away.
I have always been a huge fan of these Filco/Steelseries compact, stiff, simplistic keyboards, all those LED lights, glossy surface, flashy visuals are distracting and unnecessary.
The box.
The packing is nice and simple, this give me the same rigid, compact feel I get with the keyboard. It got this gold Ducky logo, a sticker which said "Microworks Distributed" and red patch which says "Made in Taiwan" in both Chinese and English.
The cloth bag.
It come with this fluffy cloth bag to carry the keyboard around with. (Though I don't know will I be using it, its good to have it around anyway).
The keyboard.
Standard mechanical keyboard look, it does look a lot like one of those Filco ones. It got a long backspace bar and a far enter key, just what I am used to with my old keyboards.
Oh, The cable is removable as well, it is actually one of those miniusb adapters, which is easily exchangeable.
P.S. it does have the chinese scribbles over the keys because the keyboard is made in Taiwan. Though it doesn't affect anything other than visuals.
Cosmetics.
The Caps/Num/Scroll locks have this blue LED light to indicate whether they are on or off, I guess this is mainly because of the where the media keys are placed (volume control/mute/calculator shortcut?)
The bright blue lights can be quite distracting for some people I would think, but it isn't an issue for me.
Oh it also come with these purple WSAD and red Esc key caps.
Performance. This is my first mechanical keyboard so I don't really know what is good and what is bad, but it does feel pretty well built in general (though it is quite heavy). I am aware that this is a cheaper version of these Ducky keyboard, compare with the 9008-G2, which is more well built, but offers similar features and far more expensive.
The brown switch feels quite natural to type on, it gives a good tactile feedback and a good noise.
One problem I have with the keyboard is that I feel that the keys on the lower column (shift/ctrl/space bar etc) are a bit shallow (i.e. it doesn't press in as much as my older keyboards).
Overall I am pleased with the keyboard and amazed at the low price compare with other mechanical keyboards.
*EDIT* I edited the review a bit because I exchanged my black switch for a brown one.

Mech keyboards are awesome. My friends think I'm a psycho, because I preach about these magickal keyboards for 100$+, but they don't know what we know o_O

Nice. I love a good mechanical keyboard. I'd never go back.
Unpacking blogs; for people with cameras but no video editing skills =D

the fact that \ | is next to your shift key doesn't bother you at all?

Though you reminded me, it feel a bit weird with / next to \, its easy to use the "wrong" one.
EDIT. Oh sh. yeah, I get you now yeah it could be a problem potentially for the ? key. (I actually use the right shift for ? sometimes) You can probably remap the / and \ key, and swap the key caps to make it work.
|
ah, lucky you. that change is a real hair puller for all the right shifters (at least until they're used to it). >_< i remember a huge complaint about the ss 6gv2 is that the ? / key isn't next to shift but instead the | \ key. i'd imagine similar reviews about this keyboard too. regardless, $85 for a mech keyboard is a pretty good deal.

i found old mechanical keyboard laying around the house. i could NEVER go back. mechanical keyboard + mouse of your choice + mousepad of your choice = a match made in heaven.

It is cool. I have a Unicomp Customizer myself and I cannot go to any other keyboard. In fact, since I first got this one years ago, people come over and love my keyboard so I get them for people for gifts sometimes. At work I have to use crappy keyboards. I have not been able to talk my manager into buying me a good mechanical one for work yet...maybe someday.
