So I had no plans for today and was yearning for some sort of sub or similar. Then I thought I know I'll make one, the bread and all.
I can make bread, it's pretty simple when you follow a recipe online, but never attempted a baguette style one so I went ahead and browsed the net.
I came across this one (with some tweaking), this is what I used for the bread:
1 cup water 3 cups bread flour 1 tablespoon white sugar 1 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 teaspoons yeast
Basically, you mix all of these and knead it for a while, using a machine or by hand. It was really easy by hand, although probably not as elastic as a machine would produce. Afterwards, you leave it for an hour or so to let it proof in a greased surface. Once it has grown, you can cut it how you like, I chose to make 3 fairly small baguette style shapes.
After this you have to let it proof again in a warm place for another hour so that it grows once again.
This is how one of mine looked:
About to place in the oven
Preheat the oven to 190 degrees (gas mark 5), put a little egg wash and leave it in for 20-25 minutes.
This what they come out looking like: (This is a different one to the above, because I forgot to take a photo ha)
Not overly hard on the outside, which is what I wanted rather than a really crusty french stick. Nice colour too
Butter and sliced
Now for the important parts, the fillings of course:
Ham
Turkey
Bacon that I microwaved until crispy, it's the quickest way
Two types of cheese, alternated
Grilled it for a bit, then added lettuce, tomato, seasoning and ketchup
Et voila
Not too bad for a first attempt, the ingredients here are all pretty much processed stuff from supermarket (like the ham and turkey) so I'm gonna make one with better ingredients next time. Hovering between steak or meatball
Everyone should make bread! A very satisfying feeling when it comes out nice and hot
Sorry about the photo quality, my phone is pretty dreadful, it doesn't do my sandwich justice I'm afraid. Try it yourself and see

ketchup huh, i always thought that was a weird condiment for a deli style sandwich
other than that I think it looks amazing
|
I really shouldn't have looked at this blog anywhere near lunchtime.

|
Can I has one please?!
No bacon btw!
Nice!

Almost started to laugh when I opened the blog but this looks awesome! It's been awhile since I've made my own bread but you're right, it's a great feeling and its also sooo good ^^
So far I've only made round loaves, you've got me wanting to try a baguette style now. Unfortunately I think I'll wait until it cools off here and the heat from the oven will actually be welcome.

Hot, fresh baked bread/roll is mouth watering. Awesome sandwich, I might try this sometime too.
|
Oh man that looks so good V_V Jealous of that sandwich,

other than that I think it looks amazing Yeah I've felt the same way for a long time as well. As a child it was pretty common for people to put them on sandwiches, and then one day I realized that it just didn't feel right at all, so I stopped LOL

I think this would have been better if you removed the ketchup and replaced with either mayo or ranch dressing. Otherwise, that is a pretty nice looking sandwich you got there.
|
|
omg how can you guys not love ketchup omnomnom nom u sir are a magician that looks delightful
|
nooooooooo, not ketchup, destroys the taste!!
|
first off: WHAT THE FU-KETCHUP??!
second, besides the ketchup, that looks godly amazing, and now im hungry as hell lol
|
That's a nice looking bread roll you got there. Makes me glad I just made a sourdough loaf, but, adding ketchup? Well, to each his own I guess..
|
You might scoff at the ketchup, but with 3 meats (one of which is BACON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) you all know you would eat the shit out of that sandwich.

That looks amazing! I am a bit surprised you made your own bread but microwaved the bacon because it's faster, haha. For my money nothing beats slow cooked bacon fried in a pan.

other than that I think it looks amazing Kind of how people use ketchup on pizza keke. I love food blogs with pictures :D:D Real legit sandwich now I'm hungrier than I was before ~~~~

Tomato and cheese man!
Also, I don't have any other sauces at the moment. Well I have mayo, but I don't think that complements bacon too well personally
|
mmmm looks so good. I like how you cooked your own bread, that's pretty awesome
|
i just finished dinner and now im hungry again
|
ketchup on a deli style sandwich..gross
|
microwaved bacon and ketchup what the hell? buttered bread is questionable too. Where is the mayo, mustard, pepper, tabasco sauce, etc?

LOL @ people complaining about others' food preferences. It really annoys me when people seem to assume that their taste = everyone elses'. Even more so when they talk to the person in question as if their food preferences are some how inferior or wrong. You're not the one eating it so grow up.
That aside - it looks yummy. I'd definitely like to try baking some bread once I have access to an oven again :D It'll be a nice project for me and my Mum.
|
I don't like ketchup at all or on anything (just how I roll :D), but that sandwish looks gooood ><
|
That looked good until you put ketchup on it. Mustard/mayo for sandwiches.
|
everything looks good and all...
but the bread looks fantastic. holy moses fresh baguette out of the oven makes me drool more then the sandwich itself. big bread guy i can eat sourdough bread all day long for breakfast lunch and dinner.

*Rolls her eyes.* Yeah, yeah whatever. It'd be nice to be allowed to post in a blog without getting sarcastic comments about my opinion. I'm entitled to it.

But others aren't
Coming off a little righteous there. Not everyone eats what you do...

Did you even read my first comment; 'It really annoys me when people seem to assume that their taste = everyone elses'. Even more so when they talk to the person in question as if their food preferences are some how inferior or wrong.'
I'm entitled to express my opinion, but saying that 'I eat gross stuff' falls under the umbrella of 'your taste is inferior to mine.' imo.

Responded to PM as this is way

fucking yummy.
i can see what the confusion is with the ketchup, seeing as ketchup comes from tomatoes, and you already have tomatoes on the sandwich.

Yay, all about the ketchup hate bandwagon! Ketchup is inferior, so everyone seen meddling with it must be taunted and mocked! Ketchup is cool to hate! Right, kids?
Oh wait Thats not what this thread is about, is it Classic TL making a trivial thread into something that spreads the public into two opposing sides \o/
@OP - Yay, that looks so yummy :D must try making bread O_O Making sandwiches, even with the same content, is so troublesome, i want one HUGE sandwich!
|
I had a nice post done up about how good this looked, esp w the fresh baked bread, but then you put ketchup...
|
Why did you do this to me! It looks sooo delicious! Now I want to make one myself :s
