I recently got to participate in a SC2 overnight LAN here in Dublin thanks to the good people in at http://www.boards.ie and figured it might be a good way to kick off a blog. To begin I must say I've never been a very high level SC player, only played Brood War at LAN nights but was able to beat a good few of my friends (even occasionally SirJolt, who blogs here). I've always been Protoss and I got into SC2 during the beta but I've been solid Bronze ever since, not enough time in game (but that's another blog). So my entire SC experience has really been a bubble, this night was might first experience of the community Day[9] loves so much.
We met in the pub, as all good Irish people do.
I'd never met anyone who was going, but it was easy to spot them, the only group in the place wearing TeamLiquid t-shirts and loudly extolling the virtues of proxy-hatching. Somewhat nervously (I've played Counter-strike online, so I have some idea of how 'online communities' work) I approached, and they were only lovely. It was fairly clear I was in over my head (I didn't hear of anyone lower than Diamond) but had a great time chatting in what was something like an episode of State of the Game, loads of back and forth about the GSL and NASL which was great. After a drink or two we headed to the venue. The format was Best of 1 double elimination, my first game was against a very good Zerg lad who had brought his own machine (so he was in a different room). I went 3 gate robo (as it's basically all I know how to do competently) and he utterly destroyed me with a combination of roach-ling and actually knowing how to macro, it was as they say super-effective.
This is the face of probe that knows its end is near.
After the very convincing win on his part Xios (that was his name) came downstairs and found me to shake hands and say GG in person, which was almost as shocking as my absolutely crushing defeat, and really nice. That was the impression I got of the SC2 community from the night, really nice bunch of kids. He told me his strategy and gave me some tips without a hint of boastfulness, then let me know another lad was looking for a game. The night continued with a whole mess of losses on my part, but some very enjoyable games, both playing and spectating. It was a lot like how I experience SC2 alone, I win maybe 1 out of 3 games and I really like watching games, but it was a lot more fun getting to know people, everyone was really friendly. Definitely want to do it again, appreciate the work the people from Boards put in (thanks Shiminay!). Hopefully next time I can be more of a challenge!

Thank you. In times of so much flame, it's nice to read about what a positive community we can be at the same time. 5/5

Really great to hear it's not peculiar to that group, look forward to similar experiences in future (maybe a career as a wandering SC2 player, going from country to country partying with the locals :D )

Oh I'll be calling you out at some stage, maybe we could 2v2 or something! Have a few other blog ideas first though.
You're missing out on too much these days, I would've covered the entry fee anyway
