I'm wondering if I'm just spouting out incoherent babbling or if this is a decent idea, but I'm wondering if Ravens could be used in TvZ? I'm not saying they could be a true successor to the Science Vessel, but it could work out well with tanks.
Tanks rely on positioning, and Mutalisks are traditionally used to pick off stray tanks with AA support. With that being said...
Auto turrets: 10 dps. That's similar to a stimmed marine's dps. Of course, they can't be spawned en masse nor do they really have that fear factor which 30 stimmed marines deliver when they're dashing straight for Mutalisks.
But...
PDD: Blocks up to 20 attacks. One by itself won't do too much, maybe save a few tanks. Now combine that with maybe another PDD, one Auto turret, and marines marching in, we can get spared tanks while Mutalisks do virtually little to no damage.
Cons:
This is a highly unrefined idea. I thought of this after raging at Ravens in PvT games.
This will most likely eat up gas that could be used for tanks and in army trading situations.
This could probably drive TvZ into another tank chess war (huzzah!).

Ghosts are the new science vessel:
Snipe=irradiate (without AoE), 75 or so energy to kill a zerg unit (like irradiating muta/defiler)
EMP= emp, detection, takes out shield+energy in an AoE (may require 2 since it only removes 100)
They also shoot, adding a little bit more dps against mutas+lings.
Less gas heavy than ravens, so you can make more tanks, plus rax is a cheap building/tech
Also forces the zerg to make overseers

Ravens get very strong the more you get. In high numbers they are extremely strong, but before they get to that point they're weak. A ghost has good utility before they are massed, so it's plausible for them to be used earlier.

Strange that you don't mention Heat-Seeking Missiles, an AOE ability to replace the AOE of irradiate. I've thought about using Ravens, too, in TvZ - while messing around in customs, I massed 30 of them and obliterated an army of some 30-40 hydralisks spamming HSM.
Like Froadac mentioned, it takes a higher number, though, so I wonder if there's a way someone can successfully transition into ravens.
