So, I live outside of San Francisco. This is a city in California, in a warm climate on the western coast of the United States. The area I live in is generally known for its thriving high-tech businesses and startups (headquartering Google and Facebook among other companies); liberal leanings (San Francisco and Oakland lie at the root of may progressive social movements, including civil rights for minorities and gays); and temperate weather all year round. Our summers are mild but warm; you can wear jeans 11 months out of the year in complete comfort, and it's great weather to go to the beach for most of the summer. Our winters are mild-- mild enough that I never had to wear more than 2 layers going to school early in the morning. Imagine tropical weather with less humidity.

I came home from school eagerly awaiting the summer, which would have many trips to the beach, walks along the shore, picnics in the park, barebequeing with friends, and general things you can only really do during the summer.

The first week I was home, it rained 6 days. For the following week it was cloudy... then it became overcast... and finally, a couple weeks ago, winter relented and it was sunny and warm for an extended period of time. This morning I stepped outside to grab the newspaper and it was temperate and warm. Putting on a short sleeved collared shirt and lacing up my shoes, I figured today was a good day to dress semi-casual for work. It's usually so hot that I even leave my car windows down so I can actually SIT when I get back in after a work day (black interior will do that to you).

At a 1:00 pm meeting today, I glance out of the meeting room (data structures sometimes merit a break to look out at the sun) and realize it's raining. It's not just raining drizzled specks of water, or even a mild shower-- it's the kind of rain you usually only see in summers that are A) in Moscow or B) trolling you. I don't have a coat, or an umbrella. Luckily I'm parked close to the office building... but still.

Me: Seriously summer?!
Summer: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Me: Rain in San Francisco on June 28th?! ... You've got to be kidding me.
Summer: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Me: >:|
Summer: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

After that exchange, I walk back to my desk, sit down, and there's a new email sent to everyone in the office. I check it out:
To: All
From: Chris D.
In the back parking lot there is a late model Blue Mazda with the windows left down.
peace,
Chris D
UI Team

It was sent an hour ago, at the start of the meeting. Suddenly, I realize whose car that is. My heart drops into my stomach. I can barely speak.

Me: SUMMMMMMERRRRRRRRRR!!!! *rage*
Summer: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

California's weather is so schizophrenic. It's never quite sure what season it's supposed to be.

SF has strange weather. Isn't it true that summer is typically colder than winter there?

At least YOUR weather is predictable. You can pretty much count on a rainy day most of the time, whereas your southbound neighbors are never sure what the fuck is going on.

I don't live in San Fran proper, but the city limits are about forty minutes away from my house. I've been there enough to say that the temperature is oddly consistent throughout the year, which is probably due to it being a coastal city. According to Wikipedia, though, SF has the coldest daily mean, maximum, and minimum temperatures for June through August (compared to the other major American cities), so that belief isn't unfounded. Every time I've gone, though, it's been either mildly warm or fairly cool.

Here's a temperature chart for the city throughout the year.

Yeah, the weather in the Bay Area is acting real dumb lately. I live near Oakland, and was thinking, "Really? This is THE END OF JUNE?" when I heard raindrops hitting the pavement earlier. This summer has been sucky though so far; there was only like a week really of what should have been the hot sweltering sweaty summer weather that I'm familiar with. It's almost like Cali wants to turn into Seattle or something instead of having proper Cali weather. -__-

Yes, it's true. I've heard that it being near the sea has to do with its colder temperatures in summer and warmer temperatures in winter thing though.

But to the OP, that sucks about your car. Hope that it dried out by now. D:

Are you seriously from ?SF though? It is by no means a "warm" climate. Its the city by the bay, aka fog heaven. I wouldn't be surprised if its freezing out in June.

It almost never rains up here in my home town during the summer, this last week it rained so hard that it's going to take 2 weeks before the highway is usable again

Too much complaining. It's kind of weird now, but in the northeast it's cloudy half the time and rains frequently just for the heck of it.

Nice high pressure system set here in NYC, 26C/80F+, mild humidity and sunny weather for awhile. It sounds more like California, except for the rain coming tonight.

But anyway, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Well, the reason SF summers are considered cold is that, relative to what you'd expect given the temperate winters, they are; it remains misty/foggy not just because it's a coastal city, but because it's a coastal city that's on the tip of a peninsula, so the water zerglings get a great surround on it for maximum TRPS (theromregulation per second).

Uhh... It might also be because our winter was rather hot this year. Weather around here has been crazy throughout 2011. But come on, IMO the weather around here will often give you the finger. I remember rain being so bad during a winter break (a couple years ago) that Bart had to shut down a couple stations

The Bay Area had its own record precipitation in the month of June, the wettest day ever recorded between June and September so far for the area. If that is serious, moving to the South or the East coast is horror for those folks.

There's a difference between a rainstorm in the desert and a rainstorm in the Northeast; during one of those you're wearing a raincoat, and during the other you're wearing shorts and sandals (and may have left your car window down).

Yeah it's fine, the insides of the door and edges of the seats just got wet, and most of that is just plastic. It's been through worse before. -.-

I'm in Fresno, CA and we had rain last night too. Earlier in the month we had a couple inches of rain over a week(our normal is ten inches over 12 months.) Normally our average for June is something like 95 degrees and it was in the mid 100's last week. Odd yet wonderful! :D
