Musical Recommendations

Hey guys. In the last year or two my musical tastes have really been adapting from my old standby's of Social Distortion, Against Me!, Rise Against, Black Flag, Dead Kennedy's, Bad Religion, etc into a more eclectic taste.

While I still thoroughly enjoy that style of music, I have really become an avid fan of soft music. Perhaps that's not the best way to describe it, but from the upbeat hooks from Jack Johnson, to the soul edge of Adel and James Morrison, to the folk stylings of Mumford & Sons and Ray LaMontagne, and even the unique tunes from elliot smith, I'm just really loving this style of music that isn't necessarily limited to a genre.

For anyone who has similar tastes, I'd love some recommendations to some of your favorite new and old artists, as Pandora just gives me the same 15 songs over and over.

Cheers ^^

**For those of you who aren't quite sure of what types of music I'm talking about, here are a few examples of songs from these style of artists.

Oh wow, I actually used to listen to all those bands too, and now I love Mumford & Sons! I'm really into folk-rock. A band like M&S is Noah and the Whale, which is also an english folk-rock band. I guess The Avett Brothers and the newest Decemberists album would fall into a similar category as well. I have a feeling you would also like Okkervil River and Band of Horses.

Well I guess I could recommend some stuff I have been listening to lately although it doesn't exactly fit your description, but it is still slower paced than the other stuff you listed. Of course I recommend listening to all of these songs in 720p or higher if available, it just sounds so much better.

First recommendation is Foster the People. A nice band from L.A. that can be described as being indie pop/electro kinda style but is still very pleasant to listen to. I will link two songs that I like by them: Pumped Up Kicks and Helena Beat. Pumped up kicks is a slower more chill song than Helena Beat, which definitely has an MGMT vibe to it.

Foster the People - Pumped Up Kicks:

Foster the People - Helena Beat:

Now on to the second group, The Naked and Famous. They are from New Zealand and can be described as being alternative rock/electropop. The main song I've been listening to from them has been Young Blood, which very much so plays towards their indie electropop side more than the alt rock side.

The Naked and Famous - Young Blood

For the third act, I will present to you a classic from a language nobody understands and yet everyone still seems to enjoy. Sigur Rós has been around for something like a decade and a half. They are Iceland's greatest export and provide some really cool ambient music. I'm just going to post my favorite, Hoppipolla.

Sigur Rós - Hoppipolla

I hope that you don't hate me for not necessarily posting exactly what you wanted, I am just trying to give you the opportunity to maybe expand your horizons more as you seem to have taken on role of eclectic music listener. Anyways, good luck finding some music.

since you like Elliott Smith, i'm almost 100% sure you will like the first two bands, a little less sure about the other two, but they are ofc still great

Thats hardly eclectic. Its the norm among hipsters- get with the times.

Throw in some Bibio (mostly instrumental with a dance beat), Bonobo (older beats with good tunes, highly recommended if you like Bibio and/or Ratatat), The Antlers (pretty, not good for groups generally), Cat Empire (australian geniuses, self titled by far my favorite), possibly Flying Lotus (Shhh! is itching just the right spot in my brain), Vetiver (another pretty, not good for groups generally), maybe Shugo Tokumaru (mostly instrumental stuff), Cake (fashion nugget or prolonging the magic, I guess), The Kills (first two albums, newest one is almost unlistenable), Ratatat (ep3/ep4 are fantastic for driving), Royksopp (especially the newer stuff), Devendra Banhart (folksy psychadelic stuff that seems to either be hit or miss depending on the song), definitely The Presidents of the United States of America (self titled), Teddybears (Soft Machine), the XX (emo shit, but catchy), the Ting Tings (they almost explode with a sound that makes you want to rip off your clothes and go skinny dipping), Atmosphere (When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold), Tom Waits (Rain Dogs is my favorite) and possibly Angus and Julia Stone? Hugely varying collection there that will vaguely meet your requirements, but most is at least entertaining. Also, you'll have several hundred hours of music.

Oh, and the hits from Kid Cudi, Britney Spear's newest album (she has a whistle song! guaranteed radio play!), Beck is a must too (rock with a folk twist),

As far the Foster and the Kids, its more like MGMT when they changed their name- 2 pop songs and a lot of filler (though, less so than MGMT. God that was a hard album to get through).

Sigur Ros is a group that everyone should at least be aware of, I don't listen to them often but they are definitely interesting.

Fuck, this reply is taking longer than I really wanted it to. But I feel obligated to post youtube links as well, so here goes nothing.
