Is Starcraft 2 not meant for some people?

I play Stacraft 2 because as you all know it is pretty much the best competitive game out there right now. I love following the tournaments, I love watching myself improve, and most of all I love all the competition around it. No other game has the following that SC2 has right now.

It's considered to be a game that requires every fiber of your being to be able to be good at it. Intelligence, endurance, dexterity, all the respectable traits of a gamer.

So ya, I feel good about being a "SC2 player".

But seriously after the month I've spent starting up the game again and trying to get into the swing of things I feel like the game does nothing but make me feel annoyed and irritated, even if I win. Losing is one thing but feeling pissed off as I win is a problem. Like successfully defending hellion harass with a good banshee follow up. It's annoying as hell and I don't feel any gratification out of defending against it. It's like going into a well paid job that makes you do some of the most annoying and irritating things for the entire duration of your shift.

I'm very good about not raging out of control. I typically close my eyes, "gg", and leave the game and walk away from the computer. But the feeling of anger is always there, and over time I've been finding it harder and harder to keep playing and staying calm. So basically each rush of anger has been getting stronger and stronger and is getting harder to manage.

I know you guys hate these types of rage blogs, so I avoid making them. However this is a special case because I feel like I have a potential problem that will stem out away from this game. Lately I've been getting thoughts of just hating my opponent personally rather than just being irritated with the game. I always tell myself "Cheese, annoying tactics, all-ins" are part of the game. But now I'm hating the actual player that uses them. Wtf is wrong with me right?

I feel like if I can't play SC2 properly I'm inferior as a human being. Which is really depressing. I don't mind sucking at it, but I should at least be able to approach the game without hating people right? So what do you guys think? Is SC2 for everyone and if you can't play it then that means there's something wrong with you IRL? Or is it just a game that not everyone is meant to play...

Well, the Starcraft games are real-time strategy. That's definitely not for everybody. It's intense and irritating, but it's supposed to reward you for skill and clever tactics. If you don't feel rewarded, then it probably isn't a game you should play a lot. There are plenty of other games out there that reward you in different ways - most of which are much less stressful. That doesn't mean to say you can't play SC2 sometimes, but if you devote your life to it like some people do, you're probably going to be angry all the time.

In my experience it is really important to enjoy a game because of the game and not just because of the competitive aspects of the game. There are too many ways of competing and feeling that sense of improving yourself to force yourself to play starcraft 2 even though you don't enjoy the actual game.

So my advice would be to step back from the competitive aspects of the game for a bit, maybe play team games or FFA if you cant separate 1v1 from competition, and find out what it is about the actual game of the starcraft 2 that you enjoy, then add back in the competitive aspects while keeping that source of fun in mind. It seems like the rage you are feeling is stemming from over emphasizing competition and under emphasizing the actual game part.

Nope, I don't enjoy laddering or massgaming either. I only really love to play at LANs.

Give it a shot to see if you can get over the hump and if that doesn't work out then move on.

I still love to watch and I play other games. There's no point in playing something that you aren't enjoying.

Don't you love the sound of Science Vessels exploding, or stop lurkers killing like 20 marines, or 2 zealots making 5 tanks explode with mines? Oooooh. Right, SC2 doesn't have any cool sound effects like that. Maybe that's why you're bored.

You have to pay attention to what you write. Writing

in the BW section (yes, I consider Blogs as in the BW section ) isn't going well and will only attract flamebaits like the post above this one. But if you like Starcraft and hate useless cheese that everyone can pull off, then maybe it's time to get into BW.

It just sounds like a huge problem with your mindset more than anything else. Do you enjoy playing the game? Cause if you're angry and not having any fun out of winning then yea, this game might not be for you.

Brood War for life, don't be saying no thing you don't know anything about. Sc2 is cool and all, but don't go around claiming it's the best competitive game out there and that there is no copetition in the scene like it, that's just not right man. Plus you'll get BW lovers like me to derail the thread lol Sorry, but I gotta stand up for my game brah.

Yep, I agree with posters above. Try BW.

Because all those things you described (cheese, annoying tactics, all-ins) are also in BW, but somehow... they're actually fun!

And as Chef said, if not for anything, then try BW to hear the beautiful sound of Science Vessels exploding. It's mesmerizing!

Stop-lurkers killing 20 marines, very cool.

Nestea baneling mines killing 50 marines....even cooler.

Now that I think about it though, science vessels dying is the greatest sound ever.

RTS gaming in terms of multiplayer was something I thought I would never get into. I usually play the campaigns and that's where my fun lies. I practically failed when I am competing against other people because back then, I always relied on the mouse too much when I could have made use of hotkeys back then.

It is because of my experiences of failure that repelled me from buying Starcraft 2, til I bought the starter kit (we can play the game pre-paid if we can't afford the full game) tried out the multiplayer and I decided to give it a shot. Even though I still sucked, I kept on playing, watched Starcraft veterans play and commentate, and eventually I have been converted into a SC2 junkie. XD

As for your question, SC2 much like other games of different genres cater to a specific type of gamer. It doesn't mean you suck just because you can't get into that genre, though I have been trying to get my friends into the game and at least give the custom maps a chance.

Such unnecessary derailing by jaded BW vets who want to offer you no help but to transition to 'the better game'...

Not to say BW isn't the shit, I've been playing that since I was 8. But the insane derailing of this thread just to say 'lol ur not having fun bc ur not playing BW' is stupid.

Anyways bru, I feel your pain, I am the exact same way. I get the same kind of thoughts in my head, that hey, maybe this game isn't for me? But then I just hop on with some close friends of mine, go rip up some team games and pull some silly shit (multiple nydus worms with cloaked+nuke ghosts ftw!), and hopefully over time you'll gain back your love for the game itself (if there was any true love there in the first place).

Believe me, I have been thrown into some of my worst fits of rage over this game, but at the same time, when I can collect my thoughts and really just play the game and conclude why it is I am still playing the game, it can calm me down and help me deal with my stress over the game more efficiently in future situations.

LOL at SC2 is best competitive game "out there"..I facepalm'd...And I came into the starcraft scene due to hearing SC2 coming out...
Dragoon's death sound is more awesome! I love hearing them saying "Fuck you"(is that what they actually says? Cant really figure out whats its saying....) before they dies..
You mean ESPORTS isnt a synonym for SC2? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -Proud owner of a Filco Majestouch 2 with Cherry Blue Switches- BW or SC2? Why not both?

If you don't feel good playing strangers that cheese you, play with friends you know won't cheese. Easy solution, works perfect and solves all your problems. Eventually you might get bored playing the same games over and over and will seek the adrenalin that is being cheesed yet again, until then you're safe. Competition can be fun, but if you take it too seriously it can only do you harm. There's nothing wrong with you, I know I felt the same way and many people did also. The good thing is you can avoid it, so do it. Good luck & have fun.

Anyways, to be more specific, I am not suggesting you try BW because it is a better game (imo it is, not that SC2 isn't still a good game with an exciting scene but all of this is beside the point), I am suggesting you try BW because "being annoyed even when you win" is the exact feeling that a lot of people who were into BW when SC2 came out get when they try to play SC2 and based on that I am guessing you might enjoy BW more.

Starcraft 2 shouldn't be meant for me, because my computer is below specs and the late game is basically a slideshow. Imagine trying to macro but being unable to select a probe because of lag (I know I could box them all but I don't want to accidentally send them all away from mining). My APM is around 40 because my computer won't let me go any higher.

I suspect that I would be much better if I could just have a better computer, but I can't afford one (I pay for my own university and it is $5600+ every 4 months plus living expenses). I play it a LOT though, but I'm enjoying the game below the level that I could enjoy it at.

Life is not about making due with what you have; it's about finding out just how much you can achieve. Never settle for anything less than the best. - - - Read my blog!

too be honest...as great of a game as bw is, I wouldnt really recommend it if you are particularly prone to frustration and rage...

I have been trying to train myself to be more calm when playing. This may seem like a trite suggestion and maybe it is not true of most people, but I have found that simply listening to music I like while playing allows me to be significantly calmer. Give it a try if you haven't already.

Try out Super Smash Bros Melee. It's pretty competitive and I can't think of an instance where I was frustrated when playing against another person. Of course, it's super fun as well, and a great game to play with your friends, especially when you get into the more advanced ways of playing.

But anyway, I think anyone can be good at SC2. Even people with severe physical handicaps have proven to be able to play the game at a 'decent' level in the eyes of the SC2 community, so I believe it's only a matter of gaining more patience with the game and taking your losses less to heart and more as learning experiences, which is way easier said than done in a game like SC2. Really, though, if you're getting frustrated with SC2 try out the BW ladder; you don't have silly ladder placements to worry about because you're completely aware that a Korean is out there waiting to stomp you any second now, so you spend more of your time learning and enjoying the game instead of becoming angry at the fact that your W/L ratio or ladder placement is in jeopardy.

That depends on the nature of the frustrating and rage! If you are frustrated with not being able to play well, yes, BW might not be for you. If you are frustrated because your wins feel unrewarding, quite the opposite.

it's not trolling, ppl suggest bw because the game actually rewards being good and gives much more gratification and satisfaction even with losses, which the op is looking for. that stuffs should be implied when you see bw suggestion.

My fiancee told me I should teach her how to play Starcraft 2 so she can play with me and a couple of friends. I gave her 'that look'. She can barely handle Magicka. Would make for an interesting experiment, though: "Can I get my Fiancee out of Bronze league?"

I don't know, if I were in that situation, I'd probably respond that it's a difficult game to learn but if she feels she really wants to, I'd be happy to help. I'd start by pointing her at the single player campaign and then trying some games against the AI on Easy.

This can end one of a few ways: 1) She gets into it, gets frustrated, and stops. 2) She gets good enough at it that you can find some ways to have fun together that don't require that she be that great, like 2v2. 3) She gets as good or better than you are, it consumes all of her time, and you wind up thinking "How could she ever have handled dating a Starcraft player?"

When i play bw i am never annoyed even if i lose a lot (which i do) so winning becomes even more epic than it is. Try out BW

hmm

when i play BW i am always like, damn this guy was just better gg

in sc2 idk, maybe everyone thinks that he is better than the opponent - by the default, maybe we all think like "i am the best" when we play ladder, that makes us rage when we lose

ofc when we play pro we are not raging cuz we know he is better but when playing ladder which makes us play "equal" skilled players we dont want to admit that he was just playin better... this or the game is just so random :D

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm not too bothered by the BW responses because it was my mistake for baiting you guys in for the troll.

haha

I played BW myself and had long practice sessions with my B- friend who rofl stomp me 30 - 0. It really is true, its fun even if you lose in BW. You don't get that in SC2, and in my case I don't even have fun when I win. I just don't play BW because I want to get somewhere competitively, because as we all know its practically impossible to even get B- unless you've been playing for the past decade.

I'm still unsure of what to do... Because when you really love a game like SC2 and then start realizing the possibility of the game not being the right one for you to play is really painful. Plus the problem about taking a break from the game is that I'll get even worse as time goes by. So it's either I figure my shit out or quit the game completely.

I see what you did there. ._.

Getting right to the point, I play both still and I have to agree. I do find more gratification when I snipe science vessels with scourge or kill an entire army of medics and marines with hold position lurkers just like terran loves to turn goons into blue goo. In SC2, they only added banelings, fungal, force fields and usually banelings are the ones getting most of the excitement.

So the guy doesn't like the strategies in SC2. Big whoop. Brood War isn't a bad suggestion considering it is what every RTS should strive for.

There was no legitimate discussion about BW? I'm not saying it shouldn't be discussed. But the man was asking about Starcraft 2, he never ever mentioned BW. And then several BW folks came along and started telling him he wasn't enjoying himself because he was playing the wrong game. I mean seriously,

Sc2 is cool and all, but don't go around claiming it's the best competitive game out there and that there is no copetition in the scene like it, that's just not right man. Plus you'll get BW lovers like me to derail the thread lol Sorry, but I gotta stand up for my game brah.

COMPLETELY off-topic, the dude is looking for help and this man just came in to argue about how he is so totally wrong in his opinion on the best RTS.

Dragoon's death sound is more awesome! I love hearing them saying "Fuck you"(is that what they actually says? Cant really figure out whats its saying....) before they dies..

What does any of this have to do with what the man was discussing? There is no BW discussion, people decided to hop onto this thread to derail it. You cannot defend this by saying it was some sort of legitimate BW discussion and not an obvious derailing.

Crunchums was the one I was referring to in my post you chose to quote. If that isn't true to what I
described, then what is?

Lol...I'm a BW fanboy too, but it's kind of sad how badly you guys have derailed this perfectly honest blog.

Anyway, OP, I know exactly how you feel, and it's largely a sign of you being that invested into the game. I'd just take breaks away from the game if I were you, or try to cut down for a bit. Don't be impatient about improving and take days long breaks if you have to.

Unless you're aiming to become pro, there's nothing worse than no longer having fun with a game.

If someone were to start a blog...
So I was just walking home past some typically annoying Hispanic guys when...
Don't you think that people would want to talk about that? No matter what he says after that?

What do you mean by "get somewhere competitively" ?

The question you should be asking yourself shouldn't be, "Can I get competitive at this?" Instead, the question you should really be asking is, "Am I having fun playing this?" Seems a bit strange to me to try and get competitive at something that you don't truly enjoy(I'd totally suggest another game but it seems half the thread has been about that and people are getting angry). If you enjoy watching SC2, then just watch SC2. If you don't wanna play, that's cool or w/e.

I don't think many people go into any activity saying "I am doing this because I am going to win everything". A lot of people do it because they want to have fun.

Please have fun. We want you to have fun.

You know. BW is fun

Also, last time I checked, baneling mines were an automated feature. Stop lurker is a lot more classy.

I think you should probably take a break from competitive laddering and maybe try having some fun with sc2 again or just do something else for a bit. Last thing you want to do is put a hole in the wall due to rage.

My overall goal in SC2 is to make it into Grandmasters one day. It's not to become a pro gamer, its something more personal. I just want to prove to myself that I am capable of achieving a goal on that scale. It's like asking yourself "can I be be good at something if I really tried?" and then you set out to figure out whether or not you're capable of excelling at doing something or you're just doomed to be a mediocre kind of guy for the rest of your life.

I decided I'm not going to quit. You guys are right about taking a break. Laddering for hours alone for an entire month does burn you out. I texted my friend yesterday and we played that game Hunted The Demon's Forge and had the most fun I've had all month long. If I quit then I think that would be admitting that I have no hope in life, quitters generally are right?

It's not like I find every aspect of SC2 grueling and annoying. When you see yourself winning and crushing opponent that would normally demolish you with whatever special tactics he's been using it really feels good. It also goes along to show you that you are potentially able to succeed if you really try.

OP I'm in basically the same situation. I want masters/grandmasters, I'm in diamond now. Every time I push to make it up the ladder, I just lose game after game and I get all ragey/depressed. I don't have any RL friends that play competitively, so losing and then considering that all my friends are like 'dude i thought you were good why are you losing' stacks up and makes me feel like complete shit.

It seems like you/I need a break but that just means we will fall that much farther behind the metagame.. what is a nerd to do

After mass laddering 1v1 over 1K games (not wins but just games played) and then mass laddering team games over like 900 games played I feel you on this and it recently happend to me. I started just getting on to play the AI even though I was top diamond and able to beat up to mid masters at one point. Sometimes I'll put on tunes and try to ladder 1v1 but I feel the same when I win I am frustrated at how the games feel although maybe one day they'll make some patches that can somehow turn things around for everyone. Lately what I've been doing is playing Sudden Attack, SC2 vs the AI and attempting to get into BW again.

I gotta admit just playing totally for fun without worrying about win/losing is the way to go but getting your brain to process that mentality is extremely hard for me. I think just getting on to mess around with SC2 is more fun than mass ladder so I watch tournaments and stuff but as most have said get back into BW. Even when I just rofl stomp the BW AI I feel good I have no idea what it is about to have that effect. I hope to start playing Iccup more but each time I get on I just get owned so I'm waiting until I get some timings down and solid builds.
