I will be going to Japan for the months of July and August, needless to say I am pumped!

Ima going to be blogging the trip and pics and all that jazz.

Quick question for TL who travelled to Japan before,
my food and housing costs are taken care of 90% of the time. How much should I budget for transportation? Obviously shopping and recreation is personal budget.

Thanks! :D

Subway is pretty cheap, but travelling on the Shinkansen between cities is NOT, how much will you be travelling?

A rail pass is really useful if you are doing lots of travelling. The Shinkansen is pretty expensive, we easily paid for our Rail Passes several times over.

In terms of subway/JR costs, it was about $10 (~1000 Yen) AU/US to travel one-way from Kyoto to Osaka on the JR line (standard above ground rail). This is about an hours travel, however it is relatively slow train, also depends if you take the express or not.

Smaller single trip's on the subway system were about $2~5 (200~500 Yen), depending on the number of stops.

A Rail Pass in Tokyo will get you everywhere, (rail pass covers JR lines + standard shinkansen, not subway) which is covered by the JR lines. Without one it is similar prices to the subway.

Other cities (like Kyoto are covered by a subway system which is not part of the JR lines).

Really depends on what you are planning to do, a rail pass is something to definitely think about though. They are a relativity expensive initial payment before you leave (must get them before you leave for Japan) of a few hundred dollars (not 100% sure, a friend organised this + flights etc and I just gave him a lump sum for it). It can easily pay for itself quickly however, if you are travelling on the JR lines a lot or planning some long distance trips using the shinkansen. Subway travel is NOT covered by a rail pass however.

+ you get a flashy card and get waved through the ticket gates like a VIP

Literally no way to budget your transportation unless you know where you will be travelling to/from. Public transport is widely used in Japan and so is reasonably priced. Budget what you would expect to pay in Canada and you won't be far off.

If you are travelling between big cities (like Tokyo to Osaka) then taking a coach is a cheaper option than the Train. On the other hand if you were traveling to Hokkaido then you would probably want to invest in a Shinkansen or plane ticket.

Where in Japan are you going?

Where in Japan are you going?

This, also how is your foods and housing covered? Family/friend in Japan? How long? July and august doesn't mean anything. What is the purpose of your travel?

Get a Pasmo pass for the subway, you load it from time to time and when you are leaving, they give you what remain on the pass.

Get a JR pass for tourist since you are over there for 2 months(?): http://www.japanrailpass.net/eng/en003.html
A trip to Kyoto from Tokyo is about 12000 yens.

Give us more info! There is many ppl willing to give tips.

Uhh, some tips.
- don't ask them about what they did during ww2 (cuz they don't know about it but some are interested) but I bet you know that already.
- don't plug in your laptop at restaurants (unless they're the fastfood type) and even if you see others doing it, ask permission from the owner.

Thanks for the replies everyone :D

Living with friend for entirety of trip. I dont have to worry about food and housing. By food I mean very basic 3 meals a day, etc. Ill still budget for when I eat out.

Im travelling for the sake of travelling, just seeing more of the world ^^

I don't think I will be taking subway much. I will arrive in Tokyo, stay at Mt Fuji with a friend for 2 weeks, then Kyoto for 2 weeks, then Nikko until I come home. Mostly visiting alot of people. I was mostly worried about travelling between these three places and whether to get a rail pass or not.

Be sure to hit up the arcades and challenge some Japanese newbies to some MvC2, be sure to bet a few thousand yen that you'll perfect against them.
Have you considered the MMO-Champion forum? You are just as irrational and delusional with the right portion of nostalgic populism. By the way: The old Brood War was absolutely unplayable

If you are only travelling to those three places, research how much those trips are, check how much a rail pass is, and use a calculator.

What are you going to do for two weeks at Mt. Fuji?

Mt. Fuji is worth going to once but not twice.
I wouldn't recommend anyone to stay there for 2 weeks.

edit: (Desperately hopes to visit Sapporo and Hokkaido some day.)

Want to know a Japanese joke?

"I'm sorry, Hige sori!"

I think this must be the funniest thing ever in Japan.
