So, we're reading Lord of The Flies for high school for our exams later in the year. And unlike my peers, I found this book really interesting opposed to my past books that I have read (Bleh, I guess the outsiders was okay.....) and I want to see from our book readers of Teamliquid if I could get any good thoughts on whether you agreed with Golding when he wrote the book.
If you go in-dept with the story Golding uses a lot of symbolism and other English techniques to shadow this kids book(I was really surprised when someone told me the book was written for children, its one of those things that makes me go "wait wtf?") with World War One, how dictatorship will rule upon us without any proper laws and security. And how we're all born with that natural evil inside us.
So the main reason I'm writing this blog is because I saw Philip Zimbardo's interpretation and talk in Ted about how we're going to consume to evil in some circumstances no matter how good of a person we think we are. I want to know from you intelligent thinkers of TL your opinions about this, do you think we are actually evil inside us? Will we all become seduced to dictatorship? (Like Hitler) Will we stay as good people? or is Golding and Zimbardo's idea towards our natural evil wrong altogether? Because this book and idea got me thinking many times, it influenced me to think a lot about the society and the people in it.
Thanks TL :D for reading my first ever blog, I hope this isn't my last. I'm quite tired so this blog is pretty weak and short, please bear with me im only a teenager who fails at English class
Actually... thinking about it, this isn't a blog is it? If it isn't heres the blog part: Played a lot of ladder today, hoping to get to masters. I like to rage
Here's Philip Zimbardo's talk: http://www.ted.com/talks/philip_zimbardo_on_the_psychology_of_evil.html (I really recommend it, he has many many good points and ideas) Heres a picture of the book, Lord of the Flies: http://www.faber.co.uk/site-media/onix-images/thumbs/2319_jpg_280x450_q85.jpg

I doubt there will be a dictatorship in the west any time soon. Even though a lot of people are batshit insane, there are still enough sane people to stop a dictator from taking over. People will remember Hitler and what he did for a long time.
You should define what you mean by evil. If you define good as something that benefits the society and evil as something that hinders it, everyone is evil to a certain point since everyone takes advantage of others for their own benefit at some point. When people don't have to take responsiblity they can easily abuse others. Sometimes that's taken even further, you might not have a choice. You and your family could be killed, if you don't follow orders. Are you evil then?

Cherish these books, they are great bonding tools with fellow nerds ("haha, remember Pony boy" ect.) :p
Also, as far as I know, Golding was heavily influenced by another book at the time, The Coral Island. In The Coral Island, pretty much the exact same thing happens, but instead a utopia is created on the island. Your question, as well as these books, brings up the classical philosophical argument: do you believe that people are inherently "good" or inherently "bad"? Really, it depends on your point of view and outlook on the world.
Also, remember that Dictatorship isn't necessarily "bad" or "evil", it just tends to be that Dictators are bad people (a good argument that people are inherently bad?).
